Giant Monster Games
Hi there!
I'm trying to research this interesting topic. There seem to be only a very few games made within that particular theme and most of them seem to suck. I compiled a list of the major ones that seem to have a better reputation or at least some "historical value". It's mainly derived from the mobygames "Giant Monster Games" category, but I'm almost certain that there must be some more "good" ones ![]()
Crush, Crumble and Chomp! 1981 C64 Epyx The Movie Monster Game 1986 C64 Epyx
Two early real time stragegy games. They show the potential of the genre, but fail to fully deliver satisfying experiences, IMO mostly because the monster is always doomed and usually overpowered in a few minutes.
The update polishes the graphics and adds athmosphere, but still doesn't fix the gameplay.
Rampage 1986 Arcade Atari
The origin of a series, that seems to have gotten worse with any of the many iterations that followed. Available on every possible system down to the VCS, the original delivers some quick destruction fun, that IMO gets repetitive soon.
Godzilla: Monster of Monsters 1988 NES Toho Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters 1991 NES Toho
Two classic games from the Godzillay company themselves. I definitely need to check these out.
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters 2002 GameCube Atari Dophin the Giant 2002 GameCube Nintendo War of the Monsters 2003 PS2 SCEA Peter Jackson's King Kong 2005 GameCube Ubisoft Entertainment
Very modern games that picked up the genre after almost a decade long pause. Can't say much about those as I haven't played any of them yet.
Now, why am I researching GMGs? Well, I think I'm kinda trying myself as a game designer. I love the weird scenario and the possibilities it offers, yet I think there never was a game using the full potential of it. Right now I'll try to figure what good bits those games had and maybe find a game design that is focusing on their strengths and eliminating their flaws.
I have no target system in mind as of now only that it should be Genesis/SNES or less. I'm also undecided on which genre would be best suited for this kind of scenario. I'll try discussing/adressing these issues in future entries, for the moment I'm just looking for more interesting Giant Monster Games to add to my research list ![]()
Greetings,
Manuel
