Playing Starglider (C64)

Hi there!

Instead of scrolling shmupping I do it in 3D now, with Starglider:

Now, why on earth would someone want to play the C64 version? Well, several reasons. Of course I was curious how this one would like on the C64. Next I figured the Amiga version was to be played with a mouse and forced to choose I'll always go with a Joystick ;)

So, isn't the C64 version dead slow? Honest answer, yes it is slow. Easy to cure though in this case, I'm just running VICE on 200%

Well, gameplay wise is Starglider a major let down. You'd think a game coming with a big manual and a background novel would have more to offer. But no, this is not the next Elite, instead it is just a lame shoot'em up. Probably even worse on the C64. You're basically travelling back and forth between equipment hangars and some kind of "refueling-rails". Because you're usually either running out of fuel or you need to replenish your shields. When meeting somthing else on your way, shoot it. There really isn't anything else to do.

After ~ 10.000 points it said something like "Welcome to Mission 2", but it doesn't look much different so far. Even the map looks the same to me. I'll investigate some more tomorrow, but I fear that's it already.

Greetings,

Manuel

Aaaarrrrwwwgh!

Look here, at 20.000 points I was asked to dock my ship, receiving this message then:

Since then I spent about 3 hours trying to locate something that might be an "Egron Message Pod".

I neither know what I'm looking for nor where :)

Meanwhile I have scored over 40.000 points, but nothing else ever happened since. Didn't spot anything unusual either...

I've no clue, what to do...

And just in time lemon64 is down, so I can't even ask anyone.

HELP!!

So! I beat the mission all on my own!

Basically after playing some more I discovered one very fast moving radar dot and started chasing it. Took only about one more hour to take it down and voilà: There goes the "egron message pod" bugger!

Well, Ok now my AGAV can carry 4 missiles instead of two. Yay... :)

What was funny though, was when I left the hangar after that. It seems the level progression in the game is nailed to steps of 10.000 points. Now, the message pod mission starts with level 2. By the end of it, I had accumulated ~ 70.000 points, when I was still stuck in level 2. So what happened was that the display went from "Level 3" to "level 7" in a couple of seconds.

You could really see how it recognized "Oh the player is already a level higher", then it launched the next level, then it noticed again that it's on the wrong level... They really didn't expect that someone would rack up so many points until figuring out what to do ;)

Well, for the bad news, I played for over 100.000 points up to level 11 now and besides the level 2 mission there never was another mission offered in the game. So I'm going to bail out here, I'm pretty sure it will just loop eternally.

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its sequel "Starglider 2", but first it will continue with some more oldfashioned NES shmupping.
