Playing Galivan (NES)

Hi there!

What an exciting surprise!

This is a game I played before on the C64. IIRC it came with some compilation I actually bought because it had Arkanoid on it. Total stinker, look it up in Lemon64:

More or less accidently I decided to at least give the NES version a try, since I already knew how bad the C64 version was.

And now this version appears to be a brilliant game! Yay!

I only played the first "area" so far, but it was a total blast. Imagine this game being a cross between Castlevania and Metroid. It even already has the RPGish character building, that the GBA Castlevanias have. You get experience points, have hitpoints, increase in levels, collect diverse weapons and items.

Excellent graphics, not too annoying muzak, fair gameplay - I'm hooked! Gotta continue playing this now! :D

(BTW: Anyone knowing more about Nihon Bussan or Nichibutsu? Is that the same company? I think they also did the Moon/Terra Cresta games, no?)

Greetings,

Manuel

Thanks for the info! I wonder what other treasures this obscure little japanese company is hiding ;)

Today I made my way through Areas 2 and 3. The toughest part was the boss of Area 2, a really furious worm thingy. You have to hit it with your boomerang three times into the head, which is the easy part, and then another dozen times with the sword. Cost me about 2 hours to get past that beast :)

The area 3 robo-dragon boss was then easier again.

Ace game so far, I hope the second half will be just as good as the first. If it is, I will have to start a campaign to get this masterpiece imported to the VC ;)

Here's the mobygames.com list of Nihon Bussan games:

* Artelius

* Booby Kids

* Burnin Rubber

* Classic Arcadia 3

* Crazy Climber

* Crazy Climber 2000

* Die Hard

* Hyper Crazy Climber

* Mag Max

* Mahjong Hana no Momoko Gumi

* Moon Cresta

* Seicross

* Terra Cresta

* Terra Cresta

* WCW: World Championship Wrestling

A weird NES selection. The ones I'm familiar with...

Mag Max and Seicross, two odd, old side-scrolling shooters. Both with a angled, pseudo-3D viewpoint.

And WCW: World Championship Wrestling, a game I own. At first, an 8-bit wrestling game-lover's dream, with tons of special moves, actual wrestlers, a sweet soundtrack, and some cool digitized voice.

Too bad the actual gameplay is shallow and crappy. :)

Great, I think I will be "Playing..." another 1-2 of their games sometime later this year! ;)

As for todays progress, Area 4 of Galivan was a bit of a downer. There's a point were I was forced to level-up for a while. Not because I was playing so bad, but because I needed to get an item for 1000 crystal points, when my low level character could only collect 750 of them. So I was just hacking and slashing 3-4 levels up, which was a rather boring break.

Naturally were Areas 4 and 5 a bit complexer and more complicated to play than 2 and 3, so I didn't fully finish Area 5 today. I already saw the end-bee of Area 5 though, which was killing me rather fast then :)

There wasn't too much to report yesterday. Bee-Boss wasn't that hard and I was just roaming around some in Area 6, which I was finishing today. Three impressive boss battles in a row later, I was presented with what seems to be the standard ending for this kind of game:

=> Escape in your ship and watch the evil planet explode ;)

I have to keep raving on regarding just how great this game is. By far the best title I've been "Playing..." so far! It's right up there with Metroid and later Castlevanias, getting a definite recommendation from me: PLAY THIS! :)

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another Jump'n'Slash in the form of "Rastan", but first it will continue with a Sci-Fi RPG on the Genesis.
