Playing Rygar (NES)

Hi there!

After a good dose of jump'n'shooting, what could be better than jump'n'slashing?

Rygar's the name of our hero here. And he's armed with a weapon that is basically a Yo-Yo with a buzz saw blade on the end of the string :ponder:

It's seems Rygar is on a mission from god or so, at least what I figured so far is that he has to find a couple of gods and they will give him some extra gimmicks. I already found him some climbing gear and some other thing I haven't figured out yet.

After wandering around for an hour I of course started using the maps from gamefaqs. The backgrounds look very good, the monsters are varied and the muzak is more from the annoying kind again this time. You know, that standard NES fiddly beepedy-boop...

What's also a bit tedious is the instant monster respawn, so you're more busy with button mashing than anything else.

Still I had fun with it so far, looking forward to continue tomorrow :)

Greetings,

Manuel

I've been wanting to play this game for a long while, but I never have (other than brief emulator trials).

Looking forward to your thoughts. :ponder:

Cool, just join me on this one then! :ponder:

I like the Lynx version better than the NES one.

I wonder if the original arcade version has that explorative map as well, or wether it is more linear and organized into stages? I somehow got a feeling the game was NESified like Bionic Commando or Strider. How is the Lynx version in that regard?

I also saw that there's a SMS version, but the NES one got more praise at gamefaqs :)

The Lynx version is an excellent straight port of the arcade, though cutting quite a few corners here and there (due to memory limits). A great, very addicting game nevertheless :ponder:

Btw - the Ninja Gaiden conversions on NES/Lynx got a similar treatment, with the NES treated to a full-blown original action adventure and the Lynx getting a simplified arcade conversion.

I wouldn't call NES Ninja Gaiden an action-adventure. There isn't any exploration and you don't "level up" your character or acquire any items other than temporary powerups.

It is vastly different from the coin-op version, though.

Coin-op Rygar just isn't a very good game IMO. Boring level design is mainly what drags it down.

Quite right! What I meant to point out (in lack of a better term) is that it has more depth than the coin-op with more levels and a cinematic story line.

Guess that's a matter of taste :ponder:

I personally love both the Lynx and Arcade versions. The game really starts to shine when you play for a good score, since it offers a lot of bonus scoring opportunities to be discovered, keeping you coming back to it again and again. Once you focus on that, you really can appreciate how well designed and challenging the levels are.

I'd call it one of the "missing" links between the golden age arcade games, where skillful gameplay and high scores were the main challenge/reward factors, and the later 80's slew of side-scrollers, where patient exploration and graphical pizza (new levels) took over as the excitement formula.

Thanks for the wealth of additional information regarding the other Rygar versions :ponder:

I didn't manage to continue playing the last two nights (When the living room TV isn't occupied by my wife I'll take the chance to play Breath of Fire III :))

What I found today though, is that Rygar is still a popular brand, he's even getting a promising looking Wii exclusive:

Ah Rygar, The only game I managed to beat on more than one system. I have beaten the Lynx and NES versions. I found both very enjoyable. Have you reached any of the overhead-view stages in the NES version?

Besides the map you mean? I was finally able to continue this one tonight, and yes there was an overhead castle level that was pretty cool :)

I thought it is really amazing how the overhead levels have the same enemies, the same controls and still play a bit different than the 2D sideview ones. Refreshing!

Well, well, I beat two more end-bosses I guess, one giant spider and the castle boss was some kind of demon I think. They were providing me with a crossbow and some kind of armor, at least the god who gave it to me said so :ponder:

Still having fun with this one, it might end up on my shopping list :D

And three more levels and endbosses later it's confirmed: I. must. have. this. in. my. collection!

Even the end of this game is beautiful:

Great, great fun! This is really a well designed game. And unlike the previous "Playing..." must-haves Galivan and Jackal, this finally is a NES title that was in fact a can-have as well, as it was released in Germany! :)

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its sequel "Rygar: The Legendary Adventure", but first it will continue with something more adventurous.
