Playing The Sentinel (Amiga)

Hi there!

Not to be confused with "Sentinel", the Starmaster like shmup from Synapse, this is about The Sentinel:

This game always was a tough one for me. I understood the rules, I knew how to play it, yet I never really got into it. So this will probably be my final serious attempt at this one.

It is a rather simple game. You're residing on an isometric 3D landscape and can absorb everything in there. "Everything" being a bit of an exageration here, because we're basically talking trees here.

Well, trees and 1-4 guardians, the name giving Sentinels. Now, you can absorb trees and sentinels when you can see the tile they're standing on, which ususally means you have to reside on a higher spot. Of course, the Sentinels can also absorb you, when they can see the tile you are standing on. Once you're running out of energy, you guessed it - Game Over!

Getting higher is pretty easy, as you can place rocks on the ground and so build little towers. On top you place a replicant of yourself and then you can beam into the replicant.

Sounds all very compliated, but it really isn't.

The game is backed by a landscape generator that will create 10.000 different levels, so don't expect me to beat this one ;)

You usually skip a couple of levels, depending on your energy level when beating a landscape. For the first day I played those landscapes:

Landscape Code
000
008 16257084
019 55742564
038 66947638
046 68644289
062 48596953
087 31676074
102 68482823

Well, my main problem with the game is, that I can't seem to develop any real playing strategies. I'm more playing it like Shanghai, i.e. mostly just letting it flow. If I fail at a level, I just try a different route until I manage to solve it. But it all is more the esoteric experience, I don't feel like really achieving something, since it all feels mostly luck based :)

BTW: I picked the Miggy version, since it's much faster than the C64 one, can be controlled with the mouse and has some... esoteric background music ;)

Greetings,

Manuel

Ah, The Sentinel, one of my C64 favourites! ;)

Sure, during the lower levels, you can get away with luck. But with more an more sentinels watching the ground, you definitely need a strategy. So you better practice now.

Hm... the only thing I do so far that can halfway qualify as strategy is that I ususally start with trying to build a tower as high as possible to gain some immediate height. Other than that I ususally just warp away when a Sentinel is targetting me. I also try to figure out their rotation direction and move in the opposite way so I can occasionally catch some breath. Of course, when there's 3-4 Sentinels around there's almost always one of them targetting me.

Do you remember anything of your playing style or any successful more advanced strategies?

Usually I jump between two or three spots (which I then absorb myself), trying to climb higher and higher by absorbing as many trees as possible. As soon as I am able, I switch to a higher ground and repeat.

BTW: You can also escape one sentinels vision by being UNDER his radar. Works only at the very beginning of a level, when you are very low and near to him.

I already knew about this one, it even already is on my PS shopping list :D

The remake looks interesting as well, thanks!

Well, not much progress today:

120 66438164
128 75075454

I'm basically stuck in 128 now. It has 6! ;) Sentinels and I've no clue yet how to beat it, even trying Thomas tips didn't help it so far. I nailed 2 Sentinels in my best try today, hopefully I'll do better tomorrow.

You can always go back to 120. With a different score there you will get the code for a different level.

Hey, that's some strategy for milksops! :D

Me instead was kicking some serious butts! Yes, all six of them! :D

And look what a giant jump I made, 34 levels at once!

162 54384993
194 56697802
202 99703883
223 56957694
239 41748968

Well, the others were more esoteric easy going, all peanuts with just two Sentinels hanging around ;)

I'm getting really good at this:

266 41944889
282 66967699
326 75055052
361 67800892
402 48609189
423 59546047
444 66057060
464 73655192
489 69946808

See the jump from 282 to 326? That's 44 levels at once! ;)

So, as usual I'm bailing out in this series on the 5th day:

517 57691154
547 66013160
579 57797547
595 08339256
625 24856646

BTW: That last level felt pretty impossible. I'm not sure if there's really levels known to be impossible, but that one has a serious problem: You're starting in a hole that's so deep, that I found it practically impossible to climb out. In my 30 tries nothing helped, not even hyperspacing.

Well, well, I assume to beat all 10.000 levels, you will have to dedicate a full 3 months evenings to this one :D

I should also mention that it has no end, it will just start over at level 1 then ;)

I admit I had a lot more fun playing it than I was expecting.

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its sequel "Sentinel Returns", but first it will continue with something with more action.
