Playing Auf Wiedersehen Monty (C64)

Hi there!

Yes, this installment of the series really has a German title!

I think Auf Wiedersehen Monty was the 4th or 5th game already starring Monty Mole. It's a flick-screen platformer, made of 80+ screens, which are laid out like a map of Europe. It's pretty accurate and a pretty cool feature IMO. For example there's no straight connection to eastern Europe, you have to go by plane to west Berlin ;)

In the game you're collecting money from every screen, and also interact with a couple of "special" items, which require you to complete a number of tasks. For example you need to pick up some tools in Germany to repair a lift in Austria.

The graphics are okay for this kind of game and the music is another classic Rob Hubbard piece. The controls are precise.

I started playing it last night already, but was too tired then to still type an article before bedtime. One thing that puzzled me: The first item you can collect in the game will make you invulnerable against touching enemies and will give you unlimited lifes. Even more puzzling, the game is _still_ very difficult and challenging then :ponder:

I've been sinking ~4 hours into it last night and am now about halfway through the game. I'm not even sure if I will manage to finish it today, since I possibly made a couple of wrong route descissions already for my first try of travelling through Europe.

Greetings,

Manuel

It's okay. Very Brittish, the game is totally spectrum-esque :D

Here's a pretty impressive map of the game: http://old.no/8bit/Auf%20wiedersehen%20Monty/map/

Considering beating the game, I must say I'm "not amused". In order to do so you must collect every single bit of cash from every single of the ~80 screens of the game.

All in that should add up to 18.000 credits. I made it to the end screen with 17.950 :)

Forced to either cheat or spend another happy 6 hours starting over from the beginning, I choose:

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its follow-up "Impossamole", but first it'll continue with something else.

Though I've played this game many times, I never felt like I was making much progress. I think I keep returning to it for the music more than anything else.
