Another rejection letter...

One time, I submitted a comic to King Features Syndicate and Universal Press Syndicate. Only King Features Syndicate was nice enough to send me a rejection letter. This was of a Far Side clone called "47 Meatballs." Well, since then, I've been making a webcomic about a 13-year-old girl named Jessica called, appropriately enough, "Jessica." So, I've decided to give this one a try, but before I do, I need to look through about 200 comics I've done in the past 3 years and redraw them to fit a daily format (all the ones I've done are in a Sunday format, which apparently they frown upon.) So, I'm going about this project, i've measured the comics in the paper (some's height are taller than others, but apparently the industry standard is 12.5 centimeters long. (Yes, I'm in the United States and am using the metric system. So sue me. For measuring stuff like this, i find that it's better than the odd inches, because you can be more precise because there's 30 centimeters in a foot compared to just 12 inches.) Well, anyway, before I do any more, I'd like you to take a look at what I've done so far and comment on it. Be as honest as possible, because I'm just doing this for fun and am expecting a rejection letter anyway.

Not to be Simon Cowell, but I find it difficult to get past the low quality artwork to get to the low quality jokes.

Two webcomics I read regularly are Sinfest and Schlock Mercenary. Both have collections available in book form (one measure of success), and Howard Tayler (Schlock) actually supports his family via Schlock related income!

That being said, I must remind myself that even Howard wasn't an overnight success. Instead, it was many years of hard work. (He gave a talk at Utah Valley University called "Talent? Who needs Talent?", available on YouTube, which I highly recommend.)

Thanks for your honest opinion. I knew I didn't have anything special here, and just wanted to see what the reaction was. I did make three more pages of stuff, if anyone is interested, and you can find them here, but if it's really as bad as you say, I guess I can quit working on it.

Go watch Howard Tayler's talk.

It's only bad if you stop now 'cause then you won't get any better; but if you put in the work then you will get better.

However, expecting King Features Syndicate or Universal Press Syndicate to do anything more than send you rejection letter for your current output is, IMHO, hopelessly optimistic. Your 'toons need to be funnier and drawn as well as what you see in your local newspaper for them to even consider you.

They are funny on their own... at first I didn't get that it was three, and found myself idiotically trying to figure out how it all fit together, until I figured out I was a moron... each joke is good on it's own. Together, not funny.
