Saving $1.29

If you've followed this blog at all, you'd know that I'm a fan of "Weird Al" Yankovic's music.

Well, most of it. Some of his stuff just doesn't work (like pretty-much all of "Poodle Hat" ). But I have all of his albums, plus several DVDs featuring his music videos, TV series, movie, and a live concert. I even have the laserdisc version of The Compleat Al.

That said, I'm not going to buy his new digital-download single, "Craigslist".

Why?

Well, because it's a waste of a $1.29, that's why.

First of all, Al himself posted the music video for it on YouTube. You can even see it right here - for free:

(Awww... the party-pooper. He has since disabled embedding for this video. Well, fine. Just go here then and watch it for free.)

Not bad. Not all that funny, but a spot-on Doors parody. (What is cool, is Ray Manzarek actually plays keyboards on it.)

The fact is, I'd rather hear Weird Al do more parodies of classic rock like this, than of the brainless schlock that passes for popular "music" now.

Anyway, now I've heard the song. And I can listen to it again whenever I want to. For free.

But that's not why I'm not buying it.

On his website, he says this is a preview of "songs from the next Weird Al album".

So a new album is in the works. Which I will buy when it comes out. And I'll pay for it then.

So my point is, why buy the same song twice?

On Al's MySpace page, he implores us to buy the single, so he can get on the charts this week with it, because he just missed getting on the charts with his previous digital-download single.

Eh, whatever. Ain't my problem.

But feel free to help him out if you'd like.

Oh, and here's his other song he wanted you to buy a few months ago, that didn't chart. He also posted it for free (no actual video though):

It's funnier than "Craigslist".

Enjoy!

I hear you. I also didn't buy the virtual version of the last Damned album, even if it meant waiting 4 (eternal!) months longer for the physical CD :ponder:

He needs to do an iTunes Pass.

I bought the one for Depeche Mode's Sounds of the Universe back in February. It was $18.99 (plus tax) and I immediately received the tracks Wrong and Oh Well. Between then and now I've received a total of 32 tracks, which included the remaining 11 tracks of the album when it was released in April, plus various videos and remixes. The last item was released June 16th, so there could even be more in the wings.

And another one! This time he parodies The White Stripes with CNR:

Sort-of a take on the whole "Chuck Norris is so tough..." phenomenon. But it's not about Chuck Norris. :)

Pretty good song, and a cool video by JibJab (although I could have gone all day without seeing the back of his neck :ponder: ).

Here's "Weird Al's" latest:

Pretty good song, though I wonder if the idea was to make a parody about ringtones, or just have a song that would sell a lot of them.

I watched "SuperNews" on the Current channel for the preview. The show was okay, but not all that funny. Seems a long ways from the days when Al used to take over MTV for Al TV. (I'd never even heard of Current before).

Al's digital-only EP "Internet Leaks" hits iTunes and elsewhere today.

Apparently when his new album drops (as the kids say) next year, the cost of the EP will apply towards buying the digital version.

However... since I'm still buying my music in the antiquated CD format, I guess I'll just have to hold off.

I can wait. :ponder:

According to "Weird Al's" blog (yes he finally has one... and yes, I beat him to it by nearly four years!), Sony is releasing a new "best of" compilation on October 27th. Just in time to buy them and give them out to the kiddies for Halloween!

It's a two-disc set, and features 38 tracks - including the excellent "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota", "Albuquerque" (incidentally, I'm rather proud of the fact that I just spelled that correctly without looking it up), and "Trapped in the Drive-Thru", which are so long they wouldn't normally qualify for a "hits" compilation, but Sony let Al pick out ones that weren't so much hits, but favorites of his and the fans. There's still some stuff I would've left off (Lasagna, Bedrock Anthem, eBay), and some I would have included that he didn't (Mr. Popeil, Achy Breaky Song, Young Dumb and Ugly), but overall it's an excellent collection, and well worth having if you don't have much "Weird Al" in your music library.

There aren't any rarities unfortunately (It's Still Billy Joel to Me, Pac-Man, etc), but I guess if there were, I'd be buying 30-something tracks I already own just to get them. So it's just as well. This way, I get to save $15.98. Now that's a bargain!

Weird Al is out on tour this summer. I may have to go to a show. I saw him once years ago, and it was quite a lot of fun.

But if you can't make it out to a show, you can see him perform a tiny concert here, for free!
