Making crosswords the old way
I'm sure now in the age of computers, there are crossword making programs to make ones like you find in the New York Times, but since I can't find one, probably since it's a specialty program nobody but crossword puzzle makers would be interested in, every day I sit down with a pencil, eraser and dictionary and make them the good old fashioned way. Then when I finally make one, I enter MS Paint and type the numbers and black out the black squares and write the clues. Sometime I'm going to make a short story using mostly crossword puzzle words, like "I was listening to a diva do an aria from Aida on TV whilst eating edam cheese." You know, stuff you wouldn't normally say in real life. I mean really, how many people actually use the word "err" in a conversation? You usually just say "I screwed up" instead of "I erred." But us crossword afficionados know crosswordese, a secret English dialect. My grandmother taught it to me. And if you're interested in learning crosswordese, get yourself a crossword dictionary. ![]()
