(Insert stupid Blog software here)

Well after AtariAge's big transition over to Invision POWER!!!'s latest blog software, I think I've finally gone through and fixed all of the formatting and dates in my blog that got barfed on. A huge thanks to Albert for his help, and all of his hard work in dealing with all of the other problems that happened throughout the forums. If you happen to see anything else in my blog that still needs fixing, please let me know (note: bad writing, atrocious grammar and stupid ideas don't count as things that need to be "fixed" ;) ).

The amount of work Albert's putting into making the forums throughout AtariAge look right is pretty staggering (and I suspect we're only hearing about a fraction of it). The forums are looking pretty great now, and some of the new features are pretty nice (like the new attachment uploader). What perplexes me are features that, for no good reason, Invision POWER!!! chose to remove. Some major functionality was stripped out of the blogs - especially in regards to how they're displayed in the main index. It doesn't allow sorting of the blogs by clicking on column headers, nor does it include all the stats about each blog that it used to, and you can no longer jump to the latest comments from the main index. And don't get me started on the whole idiotic "tag cloud" fiasco, where the nice, neat categories used to be. The only upside to tags is being able to assign multiple categories tags to a given entry. The problem though (besides the complete unreadability of the tag clouds) is there's no menu from which to select existing categories tags, so you have to be sure you type a tag correctly, or you could end up with a bunch of almost-the-same categories tags.

(Edit: Albert has since changed the tag cloud so it displays like the old categories did, plus he added the number of posts after each category, too. Cool! )

The amusing part of this whole mess, is that Invision POWER!!!'s webpage states in big letters: "We make communities easy."

(And just for fun, since date-editing is enabled, I was going to try and post this entry into... THE FUTURE! But it wouldn't let me. Spoil-sports. ;) )

The tags will get usefull once you can properly search them, especially once you can combine them. E.G. when searching for "graftgold" AND "c64" in my tags, you'll then get all articles about Graftgolds C64 games.

Just having the "cloud" gone is already a big help - although there's still a nasty bug where if you view a particular tag, you can only view entries on the first page. Clicking on any others just dumps you back to the forum index. :ponder:

I think you're being a bit harsh towards Invision. The version of the blog we are now running is actually close to a year old. I chose not to upgrade the blog then as it was a pretty significant upgrade and would have required a lot of skinning work on my part. At the time it looked like IP.Board 3.0 was coming fairly soon, so I decided to hold off since I'd have to reskin the entire forum anyway.

Well, little did I know that it was going to take them a year from that point to actually get 3.0 out the door. Invision clearly focused their efforts on the main forum software, and all they did to their other modules (for the most part) was the necessary work to get them to work with IP.Board 3.0. Had I actually installed this version of the blog when it was initially released, all these changes and bugs would have been apparent then, and not with the upgrade of the forum here.

That being said, yeah, it's a shame that they made many of the changes they did. I think their heart was in the right place, but they didn't put a lot of thought into some of the changes. And it obviously hasn't been very heavily tested given some of the bugs we've encountered. I don't know how many of Invision's customers actually purchase the Blog module.

At any rate, they have been very good about fixing the bugs I've pointed out to them--the probably fixed six or seven yesterday alone. And they have acknowledged the problems that exist in the blog and they are planning a major revision of it in the near future. In the meantime, I'll do what I can to help smooth over any issues until that takes place. I've already spent a lot of time dealing with the blog issues--certainly more than I was anticipating! :ponder:

Maybe I'm being a little harsh (you should have seen the first draft of this entry ;) ), but the fact that it is already a year old and a lot of this stuff hadn't been addressed yet speaks volumes. It's just thoughtlessness (or a lack of being active users of their own product) when a software company goes in and removes functionality like that.

And thank you for all your work! I'm sure it's been a major headache dealing with all of my our complaints. ;) I'm glad to hear they've been responsive to bug fixes. I'm just wondering - have their other users just not been encountering these issues? Or just not reporting them?

I have another missing feature I'd like to see put back - when you're adding a link or photo to an entry (using the "insert link", "insert image" buttons) it'd be nice if the Return or Enter key could be used to confirm it, instead of having to click on the button in the little pop-up. Similarly, having the escape key cancel out of it would be welcomed. The old forums supported both keys:

Well, hopefully Invision Power (is that anything like Nintedo Power?) won't cause more problems than they solve with the next version. And if they're "planning" a major revision, does that mean they haven't actually started working on it yet? :ponder:;)

I'm adjusting, it's upgrades like this that remind me of all the linkrot I have in my entries that I need to go through and clean up! I just wish there were a way to download all of my entries to "back them up" in a bunch of text or html files without having to go through them all and save copies.

I'm actually planning to write such a tool for quite some time now. It's good to see more demand for it :ponder:

BTW: See above, emoticons are still disabled. In fact, they're disabled in _all_ older blog comments, as far I can tell.

It seems to be really hit-or-miss. Some show up and some don't, and it's not just comments - it's some entries as well. It'd be nice if they could all just be switched to "on", since I think they were rarely disabled originally. Also, it seems as if some of the image links for them are currently broken.

Also, the cloud tag is back... but Albert already knows about it. :ponder:

The tags appear to be seriously broken. None of the links over to the right seem to be working now. The links within posts seem to work, but you can only access the first page of results. So I have to use keyword searches to find stuff in my own blog now. Fortunately, I have a pretty-good idea of what's here. Unfortunately, other people probably don't.

That said, it could be fun to hide random words in older entries and make some sort of a contest out of it, where people would have to guess words to search, and assemble them into some sort of clue to solve a puzzle. Sort of like a blog version of Scribblenauts, but without the wonky control issues. :ponder:
