I loved Star Trek Anniversary. I remember waiting for that game to arrive at my door step for what seemed like ages. When I finally got it, (3.5" disks no less) I remember installing it and loving it. I was 12 or so years old, and was already a Trek fan (wouldn't go as far as to say a Trekkie, or Trekker, but friends of mine would argue that.) Only Trek games I had played before this were Promethean Prophecy, and The Kobayashi Alternative text adventure games, 25th Anniversary was probably my first Star Trek graphic adventure game. Loved the sequel Judgement Rites as well. I remember buying the CD-Rom editions just to have the voice-overs of all the actors, which made the games even better. I recently re-played 25th Anniversary, and Judgement Rites again, and loved them as much as I did the first time I played them. Great games. It's a shame that Secret of Vulcan Fury got shelved, was really looking forward to that game.

I have several saves for 25th Anniversary, from my recent play through. I was playing the 3.5" disk version, if it matters. I need to dig out my old CD-Rom editions eventually.

Hm...hm... before going to bed I found some in the internet as well, but I couldn't load them successfully with the CD version. I'll need to install the disk version and see if the saves work with that one at least...

It's inredible to *hear* the difference between the two versions. The CD version just sounds so perfectly like the TV series, that the disk version feels almost broken in comparison

 

Meanwhile, against all odds, I managed to complete the first six episodes of the game. So far I liked the Klingon one best, albeit the one with Harry Mudd was the funniest.

 

I must say I found the adventure parts are very difficult to solve. There hasn't been one episode I could figure out completely on my own, I had to look up at least one detail on gameFAQs for every single one of them...

Glad you could find some save files. I loved all the episodes, I think my favorites were Love's Labor Jeopardized - the one where Spock gets sick, and you have to subdue the Romulans inside that space station, also has a cameo from Carol Marcus and shows them working on "the cradle" which is what probably became the Genesis Torpedo. The Klingon one was really great too. I heard a lot of people complaining about the last mission being hard to beat, mainly because of the two Elasi ships, and the fake Enterprise, but my last few play throughs of the game I never had much of a problem. Once the Elasi are dealt with, the fake Enterprise is easy to take down - I also think those torpedo upgrades you can get in that one mission (The Harry Mudd one, Another Fine Mess I think it was called) helps out tons. I can achieve 100% on all the missions except for That Old Devil Moon, I get about 95% on that one everytime, still not sure what I am missing there. I really like Judgement Rites, I love how it all culminates in an ultimate "test" at the end there, the Trelane mission is great, as is that one where the Enterprise gets disabled, and you have to rescue Spock. Really miss these styles of games, big fan of a lot of LucasArts old adventure games as well, Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tenticle, Full Throttle, etc. and of course the various Sierra titles from way back when.

Am I right to assume that Judgement Rites is even better than Anniversary? Since they were reusing the same engine, I think they could totally focus on creating even better episodes, no? Or is it more like a quick buck data disk?

 

Really miss these styles of games, big fan of a lot of LucasArts old adventure games as well, Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tenticle, Full Throttle, etc. and of course the various Sierra titles from way back when.

 

They're still pretty big in Germany/Europe. In recent years I see a Point & Click adventure in the league of DotT released every two months here I think. Mostly on PC, but the Wii is also getting a lot of ports. There's great stuff like the Ankh series, the Runaway Trilogy (1 on Wii), the Secret Files series (2 on Wii), the Undercover series, the Black Mirror series, Agatha Christie (2 on Wii) and Sherlock Holmes (soon on Wii) games and some one offs like So Blonde (soon on Wii), Edna Breaking Out, The Westerner, Jack Keane, Ceville, Book of unwritten Tales, ... I'm probably forgetting half of them - There's really many

I agree, that's a very tough mission! But since you're allowed to save whenever you want, I just did that every 30 seconds, until I won the battle

 

The ending was more or less just the usual end-of-episode with the debriefing and a Spock/Bones dialog, nothing worth taking a screenshot of.

Wow, I'd forgotten about Secret of Vulcan Fury... I played 25th Anniversary, and I'd swear I have the CD-Rom version somewhere. I also got that Special Collectors's Edition of Judgement Rites, but I never played it! Did watch the video that came with it more than once (City on the Edge of Forever). These "playings" are making me have to dig into storage bins I'd sealed shut a decade ago, heheh.

Funny enough that you mention this, I did just that last weekend; In my mothers house I still occupy the room I grew up in, and it almost qualifies as a little video game museum nowadays, since I have over 500 games stored there

 

I've been scanning through stuff and was really surprised by some games I own. E.g. besides the first Descent I also found Descent 2. That's really weird that I still bought the sequel - I remember learning about motion sickness the hard way when playing the first one

 

Also found Baldurs Gate, both Freespace games, Klingon Honor Guard, Sacrifice and other Interplay titles. Some later ones I have on magazine coverdisks only though, like Planescape Torment, Fallout 2 and Icewind Dale. I thought I grabbed both Fallouts on a Fleamarket once, but couldn't find them yet.

 

Currently I'm trying to obtain originals of Dungeon Master 2 and Frankenstein for the next Interplaying articles...
