There were actually TWO Death Race machines on Ebay at the same time! I couldn't believe it! I never see these for sale. One restoredThe other, looks mostly intact but not working. This is what I won for a reasonable price:I hope to be able to get this working so I can study the game. I will also post more info about the game because there isn't enough online about it.

Hi there!

This is cool! I once saw a working Gunfight machine on ebay.de, it went dead cheap for like 80 Euro. Unfortunately I just didn't have any room to store it somewhere then, so I let it pass.

Greetings,

Manuel

I still don't have any room. I'm in a 1BR apartment. But I'm rationalizing it as a research project so I may just resell it when I'm done. I don't know what the true market value is on this but I see no reason why I can't make back my money if I get it working. I think nonworking machines are considered a LOT less valuable to the general public but the reality is that most of these machines aren't working due to small factors. That's what has created a cottage industry of people scarfing up nonworking machaines for next to nothing, fixing them, and reselling them for a hefty profit. Some games do have highly proprietary components that are hard to replace, but games of this vintage are almost nothing but TTL chips, resistors, and caps, so it shouldn't be too bad getting it up and running. It's worth a shot I think.

You should get a Gunfight one day. I owned a Tank that my ex walked away with. My feeling is that the old B&W games are kind of in a no-man's land with collectors. A few people like us appreciate them but a lot of the time I think they have a hard time finding owners and they get destroyed.

There is a cocktail version of Gunfight also that is similar to what they did with Joust. That might be the one to get as it would integrate better in a home scenario.

Death Race is of interest to collectors for obvious reasons. Although I haven't noticed them for sale often, they might not be that rare. They made at least 10,000 of these. Depends on the attrition over the last 30 years.

Only a few pre-Space-Invaders B&W raster games are universally considered hot, like Computer Space or the original Pongs. But most games from that era are of historical importance and deserve preservation.

That look like a nice project! I don't have the space for any kind of cabinet myself, but I would love to take on something like that one day.

Um, was the seller able to get your cabinet out of Houston quickly enough?

Cat 3 Hurricanes like to eat arcade cabinets for breakfast. :)

I got a reply back from the bidder indicating that there was no damage to his warehouse. But I was over the PayPal limit so I'm waiting for it to reset on the 6th before I complete the payment and arrange for shipping. With gas prices being what they are it might cost as much to ship it as it did to buy it.
