More Tron fun

The viral marketing campaign for Tron Legacy rolls on! Someone at Disney is having a lot of fun with this.

In case you missed the new trailer... you can check it out at Apple's Trailer site or

or the viral site.

It hits a lot of the right notes. Seeing Bruce Boxleitner back as Alan Bradley, a visit to the dilapidated Flynn's Arcade (which I've been to - it's in Culver City, although I think it was an Italian restaurant at the time), the touch-surface computer console (how far ahead of the curve were they with that one?), discs, lightcycles (including a glimpse at a vintage one), a young (and perturbed) looking Jeff Bridges...

Here are some pics (yes, they're huge... but these have been reduced by half already):

I've had dreams just like this...

"Encom"? Well, a little revisionist history for the sake of the plot. ;) It's cool to see the classic arcade game featured in the film.

However, if you look closely...

They missed one. Either that, or Encom sub-licensed Discs of Tron out to Bally/Midway.

Recognize 'er?

Well... she's no Cindy Morgan, but I wouldn't delete her program either. ;)

Guitar Hero apparently features prominently in the new film.

There's also been an "alternate reality game" going on, with video of it up at Flynn Lives (scroll down to March 8th).

Another website reveals some sort of puzzle.

You can also go here, and if you're good at identifying classic (and not-so-classic) video games, you can get your own Encom employees badge (paycheck and stock options not included). This is part of yet another viral site they've set up for the movie. (I want these posters... but I'm not quite brave enough to dial the number.)

Also, IGN has just posted an interview with Alan Bradley, regarding his recent return to Encom, and the Encom site has a press release about some forthcoming event on April 2nd.

(Not to be confused with the Allen-Bradley mentioned here...)

Beyond that, reports are surfacing that Disney will be building Flynn's Arcade in Tomorrowland. This is awesome news if true. The arcade at Disneyland has been a pathetic joke for years, which is really sad because back in the early 80's it was an incredible arcade. So I'm looking forward to that. I just hope it's a permanent fixture, and has a truckload of vintage arcade games in it.

Finally, in what is probably going to be nick-named the Tron-o-rail, Disney's Monorail will be featuring a lightcycle-themed paint job.

We're still some nine months out from the movie being released, too. Disney really wants this to be a hit, and it's good to see them throwing their considerable marketing might behind it.

I just hope it's a good movie. :ponder:

All good stuff, I followed all your links and hadn't seem some of them before. Damn, that light cycle monorail looks cool! If they are building Flynn's Arcade in Tomorrowland, I'll have an excellent reason to finally visit Florida and go to Disney World. :ponder:

They sure as spending a lot of time and money marketing this movie!!

From what I've heard it's the Tomorrowland in Disneyland California. I was just there last week and the arcade is pretty pathetic. Mostly crane games. :ponder: The only thing remotely classic is a Ms Pac/Galaga reunion machine. The second floor with the cool almost life-size X-wing hanging from the ceiling is closed and has been for years. You can still the X-Wing through the window when you are in line for Space Mountain though.

The upper floor (back in the early 80's) was the bulk of the arcade. I remember it being filled with classic games. That was the best reason to go to Disneyland.

Yeah, I'm hoping they open it back up with some classic games up there. Since I have an annual pass I would be making frequent trips over there. :ponder:

Ahhh, Disneyland. I've been there, no real interest in going back unless I happen to be in the area.

Have you been there since they added the second park?

You mean "California Adventure"? No, I haven't been there in a long time.. Probably at least 15 years..

I wouldn't bother with California Misadventure. It's pretty-much a waste of time. I remember when Disney first announced it, and I thought, "Why would you put a mini-version of California, in California?" It all seemed like such a stupid idea.

They're going to gut it and change it all anyway, which is just as well. There's only a couple of things worth seeing in there. They have a nice animation exhibit, and the Muppets thing is pretty good. But there's not more than maybe a couple of hours' worth of stuff in there, tops - even if you stay for the Electrical Parade.

Just read about all the planned changes. Perhaps when I visit sometime in the future it will suck less than it does now. :ponder:

I still would rather go to Disneyworld first. If there is a Flynn's Arcade in Disneyland, though, I would make it a point to visit if I'm in the area, even if that means an expensive park admission ticket.

Ad... miss... ion...?

People pay to go there?

I just usually get in with somebody that works for Disney. :ponder:

I changed the Olivia Wilde caption to include a reference to Cindy Morgan.

Why?

Because...

That's why.

Too bad they couldn't have included her in a cameo in the new film...

Hmmm... secretly stashed away on Encom's website... the uncut interview with Alan Bradley.

Interesting!

There's a group of Flynn Lives hackers who have cracked the Encom mainframe and can access their intranet! It's way cool - you can login as various Encom execs and poke around their e-mail and more. :)

Looks like there's also going to be some trouble-a-brewin' at the press conference tonight, too.

(Again, it's well-worth keeping up on Tron-Sector and Flynn Lives!)

Well, of course at a live technical event, there had to be technical difficulties.

It looks like some timing was off with the protest at the Encom event, because Bruce Boxleitner ran out of speech and had to hem and haw his way out of it.

However, it was nice of them to have Cindy Morgan show up as his wife for a minute, although they should have scripted something for her to say. She just ended up muttering something about digitizing oranges, which (even in the context of a viral advertising campaign for the sequel to a 28-year-old movie set in a video game) seemed silly. According to the Encom e-mails (see previous post), they hinted she might be there for it, so certainly they could have written something ahead of time.

Anyway, the news of the event was that they'll be releasing an online version of Space Paranoids (you should picture Jeff Bridges gesturing with his hands and saying it like, "Space... Paranoids"). Presumably, this is the same version they programmed last year for the Comic-Con event.

That's pretty funny. :)

I'd like to think (I'd like to think  ) that I'm not a hopeless fanboy when it comes to Tron or other pop culture phenomena. Enthusiastic appreciator - sure. But I don't really own much of anything related to Tron. I've got the laserdisc set (which is still pretty sweet), the DVD (both releases) and I'll get the Blu-Ray disc the moment it's available. Other than an old Tron movie magazine or two, that's about it. But I don't own any toys (not that I wouldn't like to), don't dress up in costumes (nobody wants to see that), don't own any movie memorabilia, and didn't drive all the way up to San Francisco to watch the press event (but again... it would have been fun to have had the time/money to blow on something like that). Probably the most effort I've put into Tron was driving down to Hollywood see Tron in 70mm a few years ago. Which was way cool.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the new movie - hoping for the best, preparing for the worst - but I'll admit that following the viral marketing campaign is pretty addictive. I'm also hoping (against hope) that Space Paranoids will work on a Mac. And at some point, I'm hoping they can bring some Tron action to the iPhone. I'd definitely classify myself as a nerd (or geek) and proudly so. But I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a fanboy.

Although it's entirely possible someone else reading my blog might have something else to say about that... ;)
