"Trust me, I know what I'm doing... " :P

Hey there Bubsters, how have things been as of late? I've been conversing with a few Bubsy fans since the last entry.

First off there was my original inspiration for looking at Bubsy beyond the Jaguar, BluieBerrySoda from the original Bubsy HQ. I caught up with her on chat one day and I was telling her all the various versions of Bubsy I'd found. BTW, here is what the collection is currently looking like:

Ain't that a beauty? The recent additions since the last picture is the Australian release in purple, the release in Blue which is the Genesis release in the plastic shell, and I believe the SNES Bubsy 2 copy is new. After this there are the PAL SNES releases I can pick up and the Desert Fox PC version. But suffice to say my old Bubsy mentor (who had originally told me about the Genesis and SNES versions for the first time, and told me about Bubsy 3D) was just amazed at how many releases we've been able to dig up on Bubsy.

Speaking of Bubsy 3D, as a spoiler for a future message, I heard from Mezmorizingimage who gave me some codes for Bubsy 3D, and wanted to know if I could make a post just devoted to the Bubsy cheat codes. Sure thing! :) So how about tomorrow I do that one?

I really want to update this a bit more regular and consistently, but then that is kinda the opposite of how Bubsy is, who is really a bit on the chaotic side. :P Nevertheless, with my own HQ in better order I think I am ready for more order here as well. Recently set up all Atari systems to play with the various Atariage HSC things going on, and I have set up a SNES so that I can get through Bubsy, Bubsy 2, and I have been playing Bubsy 3D on the PS2. You know, Bubsy 3D is a lot of fun, but the underwater level is a pain in the tail !!

Or I should say it is currently kicking my tail.

The ever creative Sponge Fox had some interesting ideas for Bubsy this time around. Actually if there was any order to our blog, it would have to be thanks to her. :)

So let's look at some of these ideas:

This was unique... you'll notice some experimentations with Bubsy without the shirt. Not bad! Some would say Bubsy's whole thing was the shirt, but here we see where he could have gone without it. Suffice to say, Bubsy does not look too thrilled to be dressed like a common cat.

Again a great chance to see this character without the part that makes him iconic. If Sponge Fox was any less an artist, we might not have recognized Bubsy without the shirt, but as you can see, she has the talent to remove a major element from this character and still have it clearly known. This picture reminds me of all the times I would watch Charlie Brown as he selected his clothes in the morning, stressing over what he would wear when EVERY SHIRT AND PANTS were the same. Come to think of it, Bubsy and Charlie Brown do have a lot in common on the waredrobe aspect. Bubsy with a shirt and exclamation point, Charlie with the shirt and the zig zag. Otheriwse, both are very simple shirts.

Oh funny thing, we got the director of the Jaguar Bubsy game on here this time last year ( http://www.atariage.com/forums/user/24389-marigul/ ) and he had some great things to say ( http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/85838-bubsy-your-opinions/page__st__100 ) but one of the things he basically said off the forum when I asked him why Bubsy's shirt had a yellow exclamation mark rather than a red one "Not sure really" :) That was basically the answer.

Moving on...

This was interesting, the many possible faces of Bubsy where Sponge Fox just went nuts. This was cool. So which is my favorite alternate? Well to me most pictures of Bubsy I see have his eyelids doing the Garfield effect, you know, half closed. There is the poster that came out of the poster for Nintindo power where one eye is winking while the other eye wide open. But basically the eyelids are half shut. So to me, any wide eyed Bubsy would be a very young one, which is typical.

But I kinda like the one where he is wearing pants and slouching a bit. That was almost Huckleberry Hound like you know? :)

Bubsy the Iriomote. Yeh this was cool. Bubsy of course made an appearance as a mountain cat in the Japanese version. The voice was changed, the intro was changed, but if I could decompile and change the Japanese version, I would have Bubsy look more like this, WITH A TAIL, and looking more like a Iriomote. And when Bubsy is drowning, I would have him wave a Japanese flag, not a British flag. I mean with so few changes Bubsy could have had a cool Japanese alternate.

LOL!! You know Bonkers might give Bubsy a run for his money, but Furrball would make a great alternate for Arnold the Armadillo I think.

Nice render of Furrball! :)

LOL!! You see, THIS is the kinda of obnoxious stuff that we would expect of Bubsy. Is Bubsy a winner? Not always. A looser? Not really. Just this guy/cat tooling along, well meaning, most of the time getting out of the trouble that he generally got himself. Oh well, I thought this picture was a great one for the spirit of the Bubsy, and ironically, we don't see Bubsy in the picture. :D

Ending the tour, we have Bonkers in a Bubsy shirt giving the Bubsy phrase "what could possibly go wrong?" Within the last week MADDOG6400 wrote a comment on one of the Bubsy youtube movies I have up about the cartroon where he says

"If they layed off the, "What Could Possibly Go Wrong?" quote, then I could've seen this series AT LEAST have a full season or two."

Tis true. Bubsy actually had many lines throughout the various games. One of my favorite was where he says in the Western levels of the first Bubsy game "Well it worked for Clint..." and later on in the game where he says "You are still playing this game?!?" In the Jaguar Bubsy game while some were repeats of the first Bubsy game, I'm not sure if "Oh Sure, let's all torch the Bubster" was in that, but I thought that set the tone for a cat that was in for a lot of abuse.

And "What could possibly go wrong" with that in mind is almost like saying "Everything is going perfectly", or "What could happen?", or better yet "Trust me, I know what I'm doing" (Sledgehammer.. right before trying to disarm a nuclear bomb.)

Fact it, even someone as smooth as Han Solo used these lines a few times just before all hell broke loose. It is just a foreshadow to pay attention to what happens next, and wake up NOW if you'd been asleep up till then or you might miss the action/comedy.

And Bonkers saying "What could possibly go wrong" can NOT be a good thing combining his antics with Bubsy's luck. :P

Anyway, stay tuned in a few days when I try to pull together all the cheat codes for Bubsy, thanks for all who contributed for this entry, and keep those Bubsy stories, pictures and antedotes flowing. As Matt Smith recently said on Doctor Who "By remembering we keep the ones we love alive." You know, I believe the Bubsy fans have done that quite well.

Later!

Is Bubsy related to Chester Cheetah, the Cheetos mascot or is he the one that Elmer Fudd likes to chase?

Hmm which one does Elmer like to chase? I know of Bugs and Daffy, but no cats that I was aware of. I think Bubsy vs. Elmer would be hilarious though.

As for Chester Cheetah, I think he is the cool cousin to Bubsy, the one that Bubsy wanted to be cool like and didn't exactly fail, but didn't exactly succeed either. :lust:

As for me, you know the Cinemark Movie cat? I always thought he and Bubsy were actually quite similar.

Ni8ce collection of Bubsies, Doc - are there any you are looking for, maybe ones that can only be found in Europe?

Probably. I have the Megadrive Bubsy 1 and Bubsy 2. I always wondered if there was a Europe cover variant for the Jaguar Bubsy 3.

I do know I will need the PAL versions of Bubsy 1 and 2 for the SNES. And there might be variant packaging. Best thing to do is if you see Bubsy (in the box) being sold somewhere, take a snapshot and send it in.

(and GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT) if you find a new variant I have not found, natually I will buy it (if you don't want it) but will also credit you as the someone who caught a previously unfound Bobcat!!
