Playing North & South (C64)

Hi there!

Infogrames wouldn't give up on licensing comics - after Tintin on the Moon came North & South:

I have fond memories of this one, spending hours upon hours playing the Miggy version against my cousin 20 years ago. I don't think I ever saw the C64 version, so finally checking it out was a must. Funny enough, this 8-Bit conversion was again made by Probe Software with music from the Maniacs of Noise. I remember playing their last collaboration like it was just yesterday

Now, I said I have fond memories of North & South, but that doesn't mean that I don't realize that it's actually an average game at best. Stealing heavily from the "Cinemaware Formula", this borrows style and presentation from their better offerings like Sinbad or Rocket Ranger. With North & South they're getting so amazingly close to these productions, that actually only the Cinemaware logo is missing.

So what we get is highest quality C64 graphics and music, some little turn based strategy game on a map of North America and two little action sequences. The first is an actionized realtime battle sequence between two small armies, the second is a little jump'n'run game in order to capture the enemy flag. Everything spiced up by a few random events, like a surprise indian attack.

Playing it alone is quite pointless, since a round is only 15-20 minutes and it's rather easy to win against the computer. With two players you can easily waste a whole night on it though. The ending is yet another nice drawing. Too bad that this was already Infogrames last big C64 game:

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another Infogrames game in the form of "Drakkhen", but first it'll continue with something else.

Greetings,

Manuel
