Tetris Reviews: V-Tetris (Virtual Boy, 1995)
A new blog feature here! I am going to review every single Tetris game ever made, either on real hardware, or, on rare occasions, emulation. First up is the only normal Tetris game for the Virtual Boy (not 3D Tetris), V-Tetris. This game is antagonizingly diffuicult. The playfield is taller than normal, which should make an opportunity for more points, but more often than not, you get the wrong kind of shape you were hoping for, just messing everything up. I like to start on Level 19 for this one, because it's about a level 9 on almost all the other Tetris versions out there. And sometimes, just like in the Game Boy version, you get a cube attack (what I call getting more than 2 2x2 pieces in a row. It happens more often than you think!), although most of the time, it's less severe as the Game Boy version. The highest score I ever got was in the 2,600,000 range, not as high as the people's scores on Planet Virtual Boy's high score thing. (Since there were only 23 games released for the Virtual Boy, every game that has a score is like a never-ending HSC.) Some times, in the game, since you can't rotate fast enough, you don't get what you want to do to the pieces. You'd think I'd get used to that now, but it's other Tetris game instincts taking over and I can't flip them fast enough, which really drives me insane and really screws up my flow. Next time I'm going to review the original Game Boy version of Tetris since I'll be playing it a lot for the special Game Boy Tetris competition here on AA.
