"Yo' Doc,

Thought of you tonight while browsing through some MAME ROMS. Ever hear of a game called Magical Cat Adventure?

Cool little game and dare I say, more fun than a barrel of Bubsy's :-) lol" - Save2600

Wow! I really wonder, looking at the art and the castle bit if this was not a heavy influence for the Jaguar version of Bubsy? Wow, that is simply an amazing similarity. What do you other Bubsy fans think?

I played the game on the weekend, and there are certainly some similarities, like the floating platforms that move in a circular pattern, the danger of falling off the bottom of the screen in many places, the need to avoid water when it's present, the checkpoints part-way through the levels (achieved by getting there), collecting coins like yarn balls, and the bosses at the end. Of course in Magical Cat Adventure, you have to shoot the enemies, not pounce on them, and you do have multiple hit points per life vs. a single hit in Bubsy. Oh, and you also have Continues as well in both, with as many as you wish (have "coins" for) in Magical Cat Adventure (and chances are you'll need lots of them before you beat the bosses) vs. having to find the few available in Bubsy (if you need them at all, considering all the extra lives you can pick up). There's also a limit to how far back toward the beginning you can go in Magical Cat Adventure if you want to pick up goodies, though those are limited, though the enemies will regenerate if their area goes off the screen, and then comes back into view. In Bubsy, a dead enemy STAYS dead.

First off, love the strikingly handsome profile pic (was of Bubsy when I write this for those reading this in 2015)

That is a really nice review of the game from the Bubster perspective. So what do you shoot the enemies with? Did the cat have a name? And did the cat seem to have the same smug/cocky aire that Bubsy has?

As far as I could tell, the cat did not have a name, and did not share Bubsy's "cat"titude, though it did have an idle animation, though nothing like turning to the screen and knocking on the inside of the glass. Maybe there's documentation of the game somewhere that gives a name for the cat. As for what you shoot enemies with, there are various kinds of shots you can pick up. All of them are inside flying chests, which when you shoot them, an icon of the shot drops down to the ground where you can pick it up to use it. You have about 5 seconds to pick up the shot once it lands if you want to change your shot from what you have. Shots range from throwing daggers, to skipping stones, to twin wave pellets, to energy balls, to spirits, to fire dragons, to mortar bombs, and there are probably a few others I didn't specify or remember. The shots have different properties. Some only go in a straight line, while the skipping stones will hug the contours of the ground, even up and down hills, and the fire dragons and mortar bombs are lobbed. What I called the fire dragons leap up into defined arcs from where the shot lands, while what I called mortar bombs explode where they land. The properties are quite apparent when used. And one more similarity to Bubsy I just remembered - there were 5 different worlds.

And I was able to play the game at: www.games501.com/magical-cat-adventure.html for those who want to try it out. I found that with a simple Google search.
