Testing.. testing!

Hooked up my JVC X'Eye for the first time today. Had a minor scare when it refused to power up. Turns out it doesn't like my "smart" surge protector.

I ran Gnuberubs Soujorn on the EverDrive (cart) and from a burned CD. THANKFULLY the cart version worked flawlessly! Both FM and z80 sound was correct. On the CD side the FM played and the z80.. well, sorta played. This is a big surprise since I thought the z80 was inaccessible while in SegaCD mode. I'm asking people who actually know what they're doing why it even played in the first place. Interesting.

Testing on real hardware is always a good thing to do. Not all emulators are accurate, especially if you are doing cutting edge stuff. You might also want to get a PAL console to make sure that you can reach the maximum audience with your game. If you get into the habit of thinking about PAL/NTSC early on in the project's life cycle it can be a pain to implement some things but in general it pays big dividends down the line.

Thanks for making something SEGA Genesis! I just got one this summer, and the Mega Everdrive late summer.

I do not have a Sega CD. Will your final game work on just Everdrive?

Yeah, I should try compiling for PAL. For some reason I'm not as worried about it on the Genesis as on the 2600. Hopefully not too many changes need to be made for both NTSC and PAL. It may be down to minor speed differences.

So far people are telling me they want to see a real cartridge. Turns out the way I make digital sounds doesn't work on SegaCD so cart only.

Thanks for the support guys!

Thanks for that. So... what is stopping you detecting what you've been booted from and using the appropriate hardware for that mode?

My assembly hacking skills and familiarity with the SegaCD BIOS calls are nonexistent. :)

If I turns out that my sound and music engine will only work on cart so be it. I didn't fully realize the differences and work needed to make a SegaCD version until now.
