My 175-year-old

I was going through my stuff when I saw my 174 year old coin I have. The date on it is 1838. It's a US Large Cent. Got it for about $17 out of a coin magazine ad. This was back in 2007 or so. I checked on eBay and similar coins are going for about $40-50, some even higher. My coin is pretty dirty, but everything is still readable. I think I tried cleaning it once when I first got it (hey, it was only $17, I thought.) No luck. I guess 170-year-old dirt is sticky. The back is better than the front and has less dirt on it. But now I want an even older coin: The Draped Bust penny. Made from 1796-1807. Or a Classic Head one (1808-1814). Large Cents (like mine) were discontinued in 1857. My penny will turn 175 next year, unless the world really does end on December 21, and then an asteroid will smash into the planet, and it, and me, and only fragments of it will be 175 years old as the planet gets obliterated into space, and tiny shards of my coin would be flying through space, eventually disappearing to the naked eye.

Cool!

The oldest coin I have is from 1869, and it's black as yours. I've used cleaning products for silver (cutlery, jewel) with sucess, even for not silver based coins, with a cotton polishing the coin.

But it not work for all metal types and the coin will turn black again after some years.

There are videos about it on youtube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it91IG3Nof0
