I wouldn't mind a newer PS3 if the damn thing is quieter. Although frankly, I rarely use the PS3 these days.

I have no point of comparison. I've read that this is much quieter than the first PS3s, but not as quiet as the previous one.

From my standpoint, it's quiet enough. It doesn't detract any while watching movies. The fans are effectively silent, only the drive makes noise.
