I suppose game like those do not fall into the category:

Beamrider and Millipede on Top!

Thomas, several games on that list are exempted due to gameplay aspects. For instance, no Space Cavern/Space Canyon because of the horizontal shooting. No radar lock because the player does not move horizontally, Earth Dies Screaming is a First Person Shooter, and so on. You are correct regarding your bottom list.

 

Of your list, Milipede, Demon Attack, Solaris, and Espial remain (I totally missed Worm War I, shame on me, I'll make it up)

Why no Pigs in Space?

I would guess because only 1/3 of Pigs in Space is a vertical shooter. (2/3, if you're being really charitable.)

 

But yeah... shame on him for missing Worm War I!

And you are correct about why Pigs in Space got the axe.
