Number of BBSs in U.S. Reaches its Peak

This event repeats every year forever

Event details

The September 5, 1994 issue of Infoworld (Volume 16, number 36, page 52) estimates that there are 60,000 BBSs in the United States that serve 17 million users. This statistic is believed to be the peak of the number of BBSs in the United States. The number of BBSs began to decline after 1994. The BBS growth spanned from 1978 to 1994. The decline was largely due to Dial-up Internet service becoming widely available in 1994. By 1995, Internet service had become a must-have option for most operating systems including Microsoft Windows 95.
