In 1980 I saw Star Raiders in the New Dimensions in Computing store and had to have it. I bought an 8K Atari 400 with 410 cassette plus BASIC and Star Raiders carts. Hooked to an old B&W TV, Candy was my first full-blown computer, and she is still with me.

My friend at the store let me copy the Hardware and OS Manuals and I eagerly explored every corner of this fantastic machine. Learning 6502 assembly language was easy after years of programming TI calculators.
As a senior Computer Science student, I had dial-up access to the mainframe for my classes. I built a Ciarcia acoustic modem kit, wrote an 80-column terminal program for the 400, and did my work from home. My housemate, Rick, missed a few phone calls though. Now he's one of my best friends.
