Is this list for the 360 or the 360 core system?

I thought with the HD on the 360 they would all be compatible?????

Well.. to play xbox 1 games you will have to have a hard drive.

Not all games will be compatible... but they are making patches (emulation fixes) to get as many games working as possible. I'm sure we'll see the list double easily in coming months.

So any chance that the 360 will improve the look or performance of the old games?

963991

Yes.... Halo 2 for example... here's a looksy....

Left (xbox 1) and Right (360)

Wow! Another reason to get a 360. I guess I won't be getting one this year, but maybe someone will help me get one for my birthday next year. It will be fun playing the existing GTA games on the 360 if there is a chance they'll look that good.

That sucks. I never gave consideration to the fact that they might not all be. I would have thought that would be figured out prior. Then again, I thought the old xbox controllers would be compatible but they are not. :x

Thank goodness! I was worried that Barbie Horse Adventure and Catwoman would be incompatible!  :ponder:

964012

Yeah not to mention all those 2K2 and 2K3 sports games  Anyway, what bizarre selections, I just bought brand spankin' new releases From Russia with love and Star Wars Battlefront II, why aren't they compatible, when bargain bin crapfests like STAKE and ROGUE OPS are?! Nobody played those on the Xbox, who the hell is going to play them on the 360??

I'm still surprised there is any backward compatibility at all.  Emulation usually takes massive CPU power compared to the original - and emulating a PC P3 733 processor based system in any meaningful way is no easy feat.

The 360 in basically a really powerful computer being sold as a console. I mean three 3.2 Ghz PowerPC processors is pretty impressive for any computer nevermind a console ringing in at $400.

Another question...

These "fixes"...how would one get them? Could they be dl'd off the web copied onto CD then copied onto the 360, or are you forced to subscribe to live to get them ?

It's not as bad as I hoped -- and NO, you don't need to subscribe to get the compatibility updates -- it's included with the free XBOX Live Silver membership.

The omissions bug me though. A lot of games I care about aren't there, and I wonder if they're missing some of the titles purely to sell some sequels? I want to believe they're holding the missing titles for compatibility reasons.

I wish these were on the list:

Midway Arcade Treasures 1/2/3

Taito Legends

Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (though no one would want to start a new character if they were a longtime player ... or do this when the new one is coming)

Jedi Starfighter

Indiana Jones

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the superior first one)

Jet Set Radio Future

Panzer Dragoon Zwei

Outrun 2

either Project Gotham or Need for Speed (selling sequels?)

Splinter Cell (this is a surprise that it's not supported yet)

Unreal Championship

MechAssault

Star Wars Battlefront 1/2

Doom 3

Many of these incompatible games are playable on the Macintosh but not the XBOX 360. WTF. ;) Still, glad to see Crimson Skies and Halo on there.

I guess backwards compatibility is officially a "non-issue" for those of us with big XBOX1 collections -- we can't count on it. We'd either need to significantly pare down our collections, or keep the old system. As much as I want the new games, yet another system under the TV is something I need to think about.

I wouldn't say that.

I have quite a few games, and my xbox died (AGAIN! Thompson dvd drive victim first time, now the hard drive is dead) and although I will likely get my existing one modded/repaired, backwards compatibility is huge to me.

I'm sure they'll be added over time. The article I read indicated that ALL Xbox games will eventually be compatible:

Xbox.com: By what date do you plan to have all original Xbox games backward compatible?

Todd: We're continuing to work hard to certify as many original Xbox games to work on Xbox 360 as possible; we'll be adding to the list regularly.

Xbox.com: What criteria do you use in choosing which Xbox games will be backward compatible on Xbox 360? How far back into the Xbox game library are you going to go?

Todd: When we say Xbox library, we mean the entire Xbox library. This ranges all the way from our launch in 2001 up to games that haven't even shipped yet. As we've said before, we prioritized the top-selling titles and those games with a large Xbox Live following for launch, and we're going deeper into the portfolio every day.

It's not an issue for me either considering I don't have an Xbox 1... I can wait for those older games to show up on the list. :D

Don't worry, you'll be able to buy another one REAL CHEAP on November 22nd.

I'm sure not getting my hopes up for 100% compatible emulation ...
