  1. The 7800 is hooked up to a CRT for the first time in over a decade, and I have to say that it actually looks pretty damn good on that TV and certainly miles better than it did on either our LCD or plasma. Huge thanks to @KeeperofLindblum for passing the TV on to me; now I can finally start in on the 'does-it-work-or-not' 5200.

  2. By the way, we have a recording of the entire event and will work in the coming days to break it down into individual sessions and post them in a playlist on YouTube, along with any additional content, links, and resources made available by the panelists. We'll notify everything right here once everything is ready. Cheers! -dZ.

  3. Hi everyone, I put together a voice activated replica TV POWWW system for my talk at the Intellivision Virtual Expo 2020 (big thanks to @Rev, @DZ-Jay, @Zendocon, @Steve Jones, @First Spear and everyone else involved in organising the event): In the talk I promised to publish details of both the little circuit I used, and the ROM containing the IntyBASIC recreations of the three unreleased TV POWWW Intellivision titles known to have been played: KSlots - the first sight of Las Vegas Slots, complete with POW branding KSoccer - a Roberto Carlos style shooting game KSpace - the single player version of Space Battle, where I think you get to take potshots at a Battlestar Well here we are, you can find the instructions to build the voice trigger circuit here and the game ROM in this zip archive: tvpowww.zip If anyone builds a similar system I'd love to see it, or should you have any problems getting my hack working, please just ping me a PM and I'll try to help you out. 5. Finally getting to play this on a CRT... And it looks fantastic. Between the lighting in my office and the camera on my phone, the image on the screen isn't being done justice. But, in the flesh, it's pretty damned astounding. Nice job, Bob and company

  6. So i decided to re-upload the latest build i had for those like @splendidnut who hadn't a chance to play around with it. Was playing it myself today and kind of wish i kept at it. It's rough and not much of a game as i never populated the levels with features, items and enemy AI is fairly lackluster. Anyway i had learnt alot about player physics and how to refine the players jumping mechanics. Was something i had always wanted to achieve on the 2600 yet struggled. So there is definitely some positives that came from this project. Another gripe i had with this project was i wanted land based enemies. The issue is the height of captain comics fireball as it would fire overhead. Was thinking of a bouncing fireball like super mario bros. That would arise the similarity issue so i could never think of a way other then using tallsprites. Furthermore i was trying to prevent using any additional enemy sprites larger the 16 pixels high. Anyway the ROM is attached to the first post

  7. Folks, with the awesome Intellivision Virtual Expo behind us, as the programmer for Antarctic Tales I have been receiving questions and comments based on the game demonstration. In particular, the main question I'm getting is the following: "Carlos, Antarctic Tales looks good but it also looks difficult! Is it really a game for me?" Let me say this: Antarctic Tales is a game for everyone. My 7 year-old plays it and enjoys it. It is really not a difficult game, you just have to be attentive to a few simple principles to be able to play it well. Many of those are articulated in the manual, but let me elaborate here: Principle 1: manage the penguin's speed very carefully. There are 4 speed settings. The game is not designed to let you cross each stage at top speed (number 4). That is humanly impossible. Top speed should only be used in 2 conditions: - you are really close to the next outpost, and there are no obstacles left. That happens when the distance is lower than 70 Km. - you are desperate because time is running out. So what speed should you use? Speed 1? Forget it. Too slow. I recommend starting with speed 2, and keep pushing yourself to transition to speed 3. Speed 3 is the sweet spot, the ideal risk/benefit compromise. Eventually, you will become comfortable at that level. Principle 2: be precise when operating the disc. It may not look like it, but Antarctic Tales is not too dissimilar to Auto Racing in terms of the attention you have to pay when handling the disc. The risk here is affecting speed unintentionally. I could have designed Antarctic Tales with a cruise control mechanic: just press the desired speed on the keypad, and the penguin would stick to it. But what would be the fun in that? Instead, Antarctic Tales rewards risk taking and precision. Here's a pro tip for managing speed well when going through a curve: keep the disc pressed and just slide (rotate) it up or down to fine tune your speed. Nice and smooth. Principle 3: don't get too distracted by flags. Green flags will give you points, and purple flags will make your penguin take off. But neither matters much for clearing each stage. You know what does matter? Fish. And that takes us to the next principle... Principle 4: you should aim to pick up fish regularly. In Antarctic Tales, fish will not only give you points, but also TIME. Because of that, fish are a true life line when playing at advanced stages. Principle 5: don't get discouraged by bumping frequently into obstacles. Here is another pro tip: if the distance left is less than 10x the time left, you are doing all right. Examples: 30 seconds with 200 Km left? You are doing well. 50 seconds with 800Km left? Start picking up fish regularly and maintain speed #3 as much as possible. Do not despair, keep it steady. Another way to know if you are playing well? - If you run one full lap around Antarctica, congratulations! That's a GREAT performance. - Two laps? You are AWESOME. - Three laps? Well... please record it next time so I can learn from you Hope this helps clarify some of the questions. If not, shoot! Thanks, Carlos

  8. Hey all, First up, thanks to @nanochess and the team for organising this year’s competition. TV POWWW is a ROM I put together to support my talk at the Intellivision Virtual Expo 2020. It contains recreations of the three Intellivision games we know were used by TV POWWW, but that weren’t released by Mattel on Sharp Shot: The games are: KSlots - A POW themed version of Las Vegas Slots KSoccer - Single player Roberto Carlos style shooting game KSpace - Single player version of Sharp Shot Space Battle Like Sharp Shot, the games are pretty simple and can be played with either a controller or a voice trigger. The ROM and full instructions - including a link to how to build the voice trigger - can be found in this zip archive: tvpowww.zip Cheers decle

  9. Hello everyone, Now that the event is over (and I managed to have a restful sleep last night), I want to personally thank all the panelists for their hard work and diligence in putting their content together and sharing it with the community. I also want to thank @Rev for coming up with such a crazy idea and making us all believe that it could actually work. He was right, and we are all richer for sharing this experience yesterday. I also want to thank everyone who attended: you are the ones who made this real, interacting in the chat, asking questions, and participating in the general camaraderie throughout the entire 7+ hours session -- otherwise, it'll have been just a couple of guys in Zoom playing videos and staring at each other. We had some struggles, and we never actually could get the recorded video audio to play independently without un-muting the microphone, but that's quite alright because we managed to convince ourselves no one could hear us whispering or chatting in the next room. Still, on balance, I think it all went down well. In my humble opinion, the event was a resounding success. Not perfect, for sure, but good enough for a bunch of amateurs playing "Media Producers" on a Saturday afternoon. The content, however, was phenomenal, and I am so very impressed with all the insight and interesting topics shared by the panelists. My most sincerest thanks to everyone for coming along on this crazy ride with us. We cobbled up this thing together with sugarless bubble gum and dollar-store duck tape, and yet you all sat there patiently and contently, and provided us with wonderful feedback and motivation to keep going. It was definitely a learning experience, and we will definitely do better next time. (Oh yes, make no mistake: There will be a next time.) ? Sincerely, -dZ.

  11. I decidedly do NOT have such fortitude! ? While years in retail have eroded my holiday spirit & left me exhausted & cursing commercialism, the few things that remain untainted still managed to bring out the lil' kid in me who loves Christmas. And this whole thing is definitely one of the good things- not only for the generosity shown, but the amazing ability people seem to have to guess what someone they've never met in person would like as a gift! I will consider it a victory if I make it to December before I open my box!

  14. I so wish I could have joined in the fun yesterday, the Intellivision Virtual Expo, but one main reason I could not... I HAVE THE WORLDS WORST INTERNET... Hughes Satellite Internet. If you don't know what Satellite internet is, be thankful, but just think of getting your teeth pulled all day 24/7 and that is about it. Here is a picture of speeds I have been getting lately... see attached picture below. 26k speed... yes slower than 28k modem on Friday. Poor rubbish!! In other words.. I can't stream anything and like two tin cans on a string here.... BUT, in the spirit of the event, I made a short little video of my Mattel corner of my office.. my Intellivision II with ECS and my Aquarius. I hope you enjoy! TJ

  15. Thanks @mksmith & @TwentySixHundred. I was aiming for a bit of an "Aliens" or "2001" vibe, dark, spacey and a little foreboding. I think this is the third title screen I've done for EXO, but it's by far my favourite. I've also done a complete redesign of the "start" screen where the player can select their mission / world of choice etc. So instead of the "fly your ship to the icon" and select, which I liked, I have experimented with a Wing Commander / Gunship 2000 style ready room. I think it works much better thematically. Anyway nearly time for that November update

  20. Thanks, guys... I have player shots basically done. I'm doing a lot of 'zone reuse' for this port that I've never done before (i.e. the player and the player's shots use the same place in each DL because they never occupy the same zone).

  22. One perhaps unexpected 'tweak' to consider arises when you have an image that requires many in-line horizontal changes in colour concentrated mainly on the left side. The 6502 processor (and therefore the colour-changing screen kernel) spends much of its time on the left side of the screen 'frozen' by the ANTIC display chip while the latter accesses screen memory and performs dynamic refresh to RAM memory in general. Consequently, the kernel can make more and faster changes when freed up by ANTIC on the right side of the screen. At the extremes, at the left margin of the image it takes 48 pixels of horizontal resolution to load and save a register, but only 12 pixels at the right margin. If you have an image with a lot of colour detail on the left side that Rasta is struggling to resolve, it's worth considering horizontally flipping the image so that the detail is concentrated on the right.

  23. Wow! What a huge surprise last night on the ZeroPage Homebrew Twitch stream when we played the mystery 2600 game by Leandro Camara (Deep Space, Rally Racer) and it was a homebrew ABOUT THE ZPH SHOW!! It had everyone in it!! James, Tanya, Aerlan, Darcy and of course Pixel and Atari! Check it out here in the YouTube archive! https://youtu.be/_QXE6U2KUsI?t=2470 Thank you so much Leandro for the amazing surprise and the fun game you made for the show! ?

  24. In the case of the SAMS card, it was always intended as a replacement for the 32K, as the card is swapping memory banks into and out of that 32K memory space. It NEEDS that space to work in a way that is useful to the programmer and the user, as only a 32K window of memory is visible at any one point in time. The TI just doesn't have a large enough memory map to do it any other way. It does not prevent the use of RAM Disks either, as it works fine with the Horizon RAM Disk (any flavor), the SNUG HRD 16, or the Australian Quest 200. The CorComp, Myarc, Atronic, and Foundation cards were other solutions intended to replace the 32K, but as the system can only have one 32K solution in it at a time, they aren't possible to use in combination with a SAMS card. One note, some later Horizon boards also have an option to fill the 32K space--and that option needs to be disabled with a SAMS board installed.

  32. I shipped my gift out this afternoon. I was assured by the postal worker that there would be no issue for it getting there well before Christmas. Perhaps in as little as a week. As for your comment Carlsson, I have great fortitude (stubbornness as my wife calls it) when it comes to these things. I shouldn't have an issue waiting for Christmas. This is fun!

  36. Hello @lbaeza, @Fred_M, @Kr0tki and everyone interested in those elusive Atari Inc. International Division European Silver Boxes! I want to thank Jim Warren (jim4420) of Windsor, ONT, Canada for providing the multi-lingual manual of DIG DUG (European Silver Box). Until now, this manual was never supposed to exist or, at the very least, was never witnessed AFAIK so it's a huge archeological A8 find. The accompanying 'European Silver Box' in itself is yet to be found but, if no other way, I can recreate it considering we have the screenshot, the manual cover for reference and the multi-lingual back cover text can be based on the 2600 Euro version. Actually, look at the end of this post for a comparison between Moon Patrol (2600 Red Box Pal 1988) and Moon Patrol (1983 Atari Computers Euro Release). The text is exactly the same except for the inclusion (or not) of '1 or 2 players' at the end of each paragraph. In my next post, I'll start assembling a concise list of those European Silver Releases which deserve listings of their own on Atarimania. In a way, this would be similar to how the European releases of the Parker Bros. catalog (Popeye, Q*Bert, Super Cobra...) are represented versus the domestic releases. Those are very exciting times. I hope all lovers of the 1982-84 Silver look will get a thrill out of this manual. Cheers. Moon Patrol (1983 Atari Computers Euro Release) / Moon Patrol (2600 Red Box Pal 1988)

  37. I finally loaded this onto my Mateos multicart and it looks amazing on my CRT with s-video/composite. The pictures from my phone don't do it justice. I don’t notice much flicker at all. However, the last line of the title and credits screen is a bit low. Not sure if it’s just my particular CRT. I didn’t have time to dig out my other one(s) to compare. Has anyone else played this on real hardware with a CRT and noticed this? Excellent work. This version looks and plays well, although I suck at it.?

  38. 7800basic v0.16 is now available at the github releases page. Here's what's new since the v0.15 release... updated the plotsprite frame parameter to take into account tallspriteheight. added "set deprecated frameheight" to allow for historic plotsprite frame behavior with tall sprites. added hiscoreload command, to load tables from hi score devices into ram. added support for optional game routines: altgamestart, bottomscreen and userinterrupt. splitmode demo sample changed to splitmodetop and splitmodebottom examples, which demonstrate mode splits without wasting cycles. allow variables for boxcollision width and height parameters. added yellow screen of death, to make it obvious when data has been executed. fix: enable bank 0 prior to turning on dma, to avoid race between startup and dma when using topscreenroutine. fix: shakescreen adjusted to work with 224 line display fix: "set canary off" fixed to actually disable the canary the bundled dasm has been update to the latest 2.20.14.1 release. The previously mentioned bug (array with complex math in if...then condition) hasn't been addressed yet. I wanted to level-set with this release, before digging into that one. I also want to bring special attention to the yellow screen of death feature. Just like the canary, it's meant to alert you to a very problematic condition in your code (execution of data) by making the failure obvious. If your code was previously working, and you get a yellow screen of death under certain conditions, it means your code really wasn't working correctly before.

Taking a break from world 2 and 3 level design, I decided to do some work on the other areas that were either placeholders/port graphics or something that needed updating to make it consistent to the rest of the design evolution. New title screen. Still needs some minor tweakage, but you get the general idea. (and yes the MV logo is slightly off centre, before Trebor notices )
