  1. Well, I think it's a general extension of this whole new generation that feels they have some right to not be offended, and everything that doesn't fit into their world view is offensive. I want things my way and I want them now, otherwise I'll press charges and sue! That probably pushes a little too close to political speech, which we're not supposed to get into here, so I'll just stop right before I say something that will really get me into trouble or send me to AA jail.

  2. No, it's not that cool computer that Adam West had, that knew everything. Here is my "Battery Adapted TI" Computer: While I had the console open, I installed a USB keyboard adapter I bought from JediMatt. It works with every keyboard I have tried (3 Logitech radio keyboards). The keyboard shown with it is a Logitech K270. It also worked with a Logitech K750. Don't remember the third one's model number. The K270 is just a USB-radio keyboard. The others are Keyboard/Mouse combos, which I use in my other computers. Here's the interior: I used a little "tool box," that I had bought years ago, to hold two battery packs. One powers the CPU and NanoPEB, and the other powers an LCD monitor. Actually, this is the Mark 2 model, because the first incarnation had close to one volt, if I remember correctly, of noise on the power lines. My first clue was when the display made "funny" colors at the Ed/Assem screen. Here is a picture of the parts that went into the box: The CPU battery pack is 21V, 5AH feeding two DC-DC converters. One generates +/-5V, and the other generates +12V. The Display battery pack is 21V,3AH that goes directly to the display, which can handle 10-30VDC power. I'll put in a parts list so that anyone interested could build one. DISCLAIMER: I am (obviously) not responsible for damage to equipment that may result from building this project. Mine works, so far. The wiring kit for the batteries included a bunch of LEDs to monitor charge level, etc. They are REALLY bright! I'm thinking of splicing-in a resistor to dim them a bit. The black cable draped over top is the charging cable, from a 19V 5A power supply, in place of the "car adapter" shown in the "parts" picture. So far, so good. K-R.

  3. So enough about what a bad person Brad is. Here's my experience each and every time I submit an order with Best Electronics... Although I've never met him or talked to him over the phone, Brad always treats me with kindness and respect, and is quick to respond to any emailed order I send his way. You can probably imagine that he receives quite a few emails each day, so I try to organize mine by putting together a list of what I need including the Atari part numbers, description, and pricing from his website and embed it into an email with the subject line of 'Atari Parts Order'. Here's and example. <At the end of the email I add my address and phone number> And here's Brad's reply the very same day I placed the order. Pretty nice for someone that has been accused of mistreating his customers . Bottom line is that if you treat Brad the way you would like to be treated, he will respond in kind and probably not limit you to 2 or 3 items either ? .

  4. I just wish some people would be more respectful of the person that is Brad, you might be annoyed by his quirks but to make personal remarks about him is bang out of order. I don't know Mr Koda that well, I have met him once and he was a really nice gentleman, any emails I've sent have be replied to in a timely fashion and I've never had constraints but accept others have. Sure it must be annoying but keep it professional eh. If you don't like his way then quite rightly vote with your feet, it's a free choice. In truth we need Bradley as much as he needs us and when he does business its prompt and well supported, just try and remember that Mr Koda isn't a spring chicken these days and despite his talking I bet its just him and maybe his wife or family members running all this, maybe even just him. Saying that, he's still plugging away and supplying us with parts. Just keep it respectful eh....

  5. Interesting. Do they actually have laws against 'being an asshole'? I wonder how that gets defined, exactly, and also if that applies to posting rights on boards...hmm. Or even the media in general, there COULD be some assholery there too.

  6. Reminds me (closely) of early Borland MS-DOS based UI and very early incarnations of Windows. It seems to me that the Atari platform has more architectural horse-power than the C64 (even being three years older). That is, I think we will be better off continuing (and optimizing) Jońs path... the path towards a genuine and modern-looking GUI, better leveraging Atari assets. I am not overly concerned about colors, as I would prefer a productivity-bias when using the GUI.

  9. Looks like the stories are true. I stopped in the Goodwill a while back and they had around 100 video games. Each one said on it somewhere, NHL, MLB, Madden, or Kinect Adventures, whatever the F that is. My guess is that now donations go into 3 piles: Ebay, Amazon, and stuff so awful they might as well just leave it in the stores.

  13. Yes, and therefore, in the native mode of the Geneve, the video ports are the same for reading and writing because it was not necessary to pick two different addresses. These are the things that you simply accepted at first, but learn some decades later why it had to be done.

  14. Update this week, feels like some pretty solid improvements. I think it's coming together as a game. It's also at that fun stage where I'm out of ROM space, so every addition requires a bit of cleanup or refactor to free up space. It's been interesting to see how many bytes of ROM space each type of addition (new enemies, new treasures, etc) takes. 2021/03/21 - fixed bug w/ losing weapons after each level - fixed bug w/ map sprites getting chopped off in some emus & real hardware - first pass of HSC support (haven't tested thoroughly, so I'd be interested to know how well it works) - first pass of having 3 difficulty levels (see instructions - right now it just changes how health is restored after each level) - a couple new enemy types (I'm pretty happy about these, I think they turned out well) - award 'exploration bonus' after each level (100 points per room, but reaching all 64 rooms is a bonus of 10,000) - scoring tweaks - some other minor tweaks and improvements to the level generation wizarddungeon_wip.bas.a78

  15. Yay, a list of games. Arcade Salamander - 2 Shinobi - 5 Space Harrier - 4 Neo Geo AES/MVS Garou: Mark of the Wolves - 18 March 15 is Terry Bogard's birthday. You didn't forget, did you? He'd be 50 now if he was a real person, but he isn't. Anyway, I played a few rounds to celebrate. I was planning on playing every Fatal Fury game on the Neo Geo (the regular Neo Geo, not the Pocket Color, as I don't have one of those yet), but I was lazy and didn't feel like disassembling my Saturn to set up the Neo Geo instead, as I only have enough space on my desk for 1 huge system at a time. Saturn Akumajou Dracula X ~Gekka no Yasoukyoku~ - 21 Cotton 2 - 50 Thunder Force III - 37 Thunder Force IV - 31 Thunder Force V - 7 Thunder Force AC - 5 Genesis/MD Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - 1 I actually only played it for 47 seconds, but close enough, I guess. I was waiting for a meeting to start, so I naturally pulled out my Nomad and played Sonic 2... and somehow managed to beat my old best Emerald Hill Zone Act 1 time of 25 seconds by 1 second without any practice. Then after the meeting was over, I beat my new time by a second, so now I'm at 23 seconds, and on the Nomad! I've identified a few areas where I can go faster, so I should be able to get it to 21~22 seconds with some practice. Can you do better?

  17. Here's a testable binary for the Walker Demo. It doesn't do much, you can move your walker and the walker cross hair. You need an ST or Amiga mouse for this to work. Use a 7800 controller in the right port, an ST or Amiga mouse in the left port. If you are using an ST mouse, set the left difficulty switch to B, If you are using an Amiga mouse set the left difficulty switch to A If you set it wrong then put the switch in the right setting and restart the ROM. will work on A7800 but not sure about other emulators as I don't know if they support mouse as an input. Works fine on Dragonfly, I would expect it to be fine on Concerto too. Pal colours might be slightly wonky as it's set to an NTSC palette. Move your walker using Up and Down (yep I know that sounds odd but I had the idea that you would have your controller rotated 90 degrees so you could hold it in one hand, mouse in the other, using up down to move the walker and left right to trigger other things.). If this ever became a real game, I'd put options in for different types of control schemes including trackball and folks not using regular game pads. This is one idea on the back burner for something once I'm done with EXO and Bernie, but right now, it's just a tech demo, no game Anyway, enjoy this doodle. walkerdemo7.a78

  19. Alright, I finally got around to porting my hi/lo relocator to SDX, and so here's another experiment, Altirra XEP80 driver for SpartaDOS X (not super tested, have used on 4.49e): altxepx.sys Changes compared to previous drivers: Loads low instead of high, as SDX drivers generally do. Hooks into SDX reset vector table. Unified driver via command-line options: /1: Use port 1 instead of port 2. /P: Init to PAL instead of NTSC on reset. /V: Adjust video timing to be more sane. /U: Ultra speed (use 31.5KHz comm rate). MEMLO rise depends on options. /V adds a little bit, /U adds quite a bit more. Without either option it's slightly under SDX's XEP80.SYS. As with other SDX drivers, you can either load it with DEVICE in CONFIG.SYS or just run it from the command line. /V uses a new timing table for NTSC, and also another new one for PAL. Unlike XEPVHOLD, it is reapplied on reset. Horizontal position is recentered, extending horizontal blank worked to avoid the FIFO conflict. The PAL table displays 24 rows x 11 lines = 252 visible lines. It turns out that my Dell U2711 monitor displays PAL fine, which I used for tuning the new PAL table. My Samsung TV, OTOH, does a crappy job of it -- it'll display the signal, but with the same height as NTSC at around 232 visible lines. Ugh. I'm actually kind of surprised that the 741MP managed to lock onto this: HLR = $67 -> Horizontal total of 104 characters. 12MHz / 7 dots/char / 104 chars = 16.483KHz horizontal scan CSHR + ES/F = $91 -> 10 lines/row, 1 extra scan line VLR = $1C -> 29 rows, (29 rows * 10 lines/row) + 1 extra scan line -> 291 lines, 16.483KHz / 291 = 56.64Hz vertical scan The XEP80's default timing parameters for NTSC are 68 4F 52 5F 91 1A 18, while PAL changes the fifth value to B2. ALTXEPX.SYS uses 6D 54 56 60 A4 1B 18 46 (15.584KHz / 49.95 Hz).

I hit a roadblock trying to use that same eprom code to permit booting from IDE, and SCSI eprom booting has not been tested yet. I just got the latest updates for the HRD for 8 MB use and the additional SCSMAP'ing capability. I think the next step is to confirm the IDE code has no issues, and likely we will be close to a beta release for feedback. I'm using the newest code exclusively and haven't identified any issues thus far. Beery

  25. While our family is a Commodore family - Dad's first computer was a C64, i wrote my first program on his C128, my first own homecomputer is an Amiga 500+ - but my first own machine - shared with my little brother - was an Atari VCS clone in 1991. It came with a cartridge with some games (i only remember Slot Racers, Tank Plus and Outlaw) and two poorly constructed joysticks which were broken immediately and we had to use QuickShots instead. Unfortunately one day the cartridge has given it's soul back to it's manufactors, so the machine has left home and the brazilian NES clone, SuperCom 72 came instead. While we managed to get back most of our retromachines in these decades (my brother found our C64 around Szeged, a city nearly 200km away from us, i found his A1200 at a local "Amiga-killer" and we "bought" back our C128 for a webshop; now only the family's first Amiga is missing but we are on it's tracks), but we had no hope for this one, as we thought that it was taken back to the shop where it must have been thrown out as unrepairable and obsolete. However, we were wrong. It turned out that even with the cartridge dead, the machine itself contained games too (we were like 3 and 5 years old, we have never removed it) and Dad did not gave it back to the shop, but sold to another family. (It was a misunderstanding, only the new console came from the shop.) And my brother accidentally ran into this family a year ago because some kind of purchase. They mistook him for our father and after clarifying that he is his son, they told him that they have bought a "game machine" from Dad, but they have no idea where it is. A year has passed and my brother - out of pure coincidence - ran into their FB want-ad of an Atari VCS clone. He contacted them and asked if it is the same machine and it was: they bought it from our father roughly 30 years ago, without a cartridge and joysticks (broken joysticks as it actually turned out). Everything was in it's place in the story and the setup. So as unbelievable it is, my first machine ever has returned after 30 years. They always say, it's a small world, well sometimes it really is. Here is the console: The box: While the story was that they got it without joysticks and Dad told them where to get new ones, the shop only had QuickShots and similar joysticks and these are "factory" joysticks and they are as broken as ours was: We got a supply with it, but it gives 15V with all voltage settings, i dared not to use it: Fortunately it's cable was detachable so i could plug it into my supply. Also fortunately, my Sony Trinitron has RF, so i could use it. (Originally it was used with a Videoton.) I have found 131 games in it. Unfortunately neither Slot Racers or Tank Plus (our favorites) are in the machine. It has Outlaw, but my brother hated that, he always lost in that game. But there is Berzerker (which i do not remember if we had in the cartridge): I think i should write some kind of conclusion here, but i could not come up with anything, so that's it.

  26. My usual retrogaming TV. Not bad for a basic consumer set from the early 00’s. A minor geometry issue at the top right but not bad and generally not an issue for a real game. Considering I got this set 5 years ago for the low, low price of “Please, just get this dinosaur out of my house!”, I really can’t complain.

The only issues I've ever had dealing with him is feeling nervous and walking on eggshells, trying not to do or say anything that might upset him, not due in any way to how he's ever acted towards or treated me, but due to the email testimonials that I see from strangers on this board.

  30. Searching Wal-Mart's website for 'Atari VCS', I get a total of 32 results. None of them are for the unit we're talking about here. GameStop is still showing preorders starting on April 30th for either of the controllers, a base system, and one bundled with controllers. With GameStop being the Radio Shack of the 2020s, this doesn't bode well for its chances of success in the wider marketplace. They're dead and just don't know it yet, and apparently no longer being available from America's largest retailer is not a good sign either. I'll be very surprised if production has been ramping up since Christmas to meet the massive retail demand production quantities needed to be carried by a major retailer, even one as near death as GameStop. That requires a revenue stream, which is basically nonexistent for Fauxtari at this point. Banks and/or investors aren't going to throw money at them unless there's at least some guarantee of a return, and it's difficult to see any of their production facilities extending credit to them in order to build the things. Then again, actual Atari made more 2600 Pac-Man cartridges than there were consoles in circulation, so with that bit of historical precedent maybe they'll pull out a rabbit. Doubtful, but given infinite sets of probabilities, anything could happen.

  35. Is this a citation of actual law? Because I can't find it. It seems to me that you are instead quoting this website or something similar, and have changed the wording a bit to support your argument: https://www.mydoorsign.com/blog/right-to-refuse-service-to-anyone/ From the site: "These signs also don’t allow business owners to refuse service based on arbitrary reasons outside of the protected classes (though pointing out signs to cries of “No fair!” might avoid any further action on the part of spurned patrons). Instead, reasons must be legitimate enough to hold up in court. In general, refusal of service is justified in cases where a customer’s presence interferes with the safety and well-being of other patrons and the establishment itself. The most basic examples of this include patrons who are unreasonably rowdy, patrons lacking adequate hygiene, and those accompanied by large groups of non-customers." The actual law, which is California Civil Code Section 51 (aka the "Unruh Civil Rights Act"), states: "All persons within the jurisdiction of this state are free and equal, and no matter what their sex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, genetic information, marital status, sexual orientation, citizenship, primary language, or immigration status are entitled to the full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities, privileges, or services in all business establishments of every kind whatsoever." Even if business were required to provide service to all customers (they aren't), and even if it were illegal to be disrespectful to customers (it isn't), none of this applies to Brad and how he conducts business. Brad is not refusing service, he is setting conditions under which he will provide service. He is not refusing you entry into his warehouse based on the clothes you're wearing or your haircut (truly "arbitrary" reasons a racist could use, for instance, as an excuse to refuse service to someone based on the color of their skin), but is refusing you service at all based on what he perceives as a pattern of wasting his time. The law is not meant to force Brad to reply to your every email when he feels you are wasting his time. It is not meant to force Brad to sell you five AC power adapters when he only wants to sell you three, nor is it meant to ensure that Brad is really nice to you in his emails.

  38. NEW NAME: It is now the splash-o-matic 2600 (given its usefulness for splash screens) AND A NEW URL: https://alienbill.com/2600/splash-o-matic/ AND A NEW FEATURE... colors! Thanks to Karl Garrison's nifty kernel work, you can now have a nifty (if unoptimized) kernel that changes the color every scanline. TEASER: thinking about what might make this more and more useful... wouldn't a text tool be cool? Maybe with fonts at various sizes... Hope the UI for changing the color makes sense to people... basically when making a color kernel "color" is a tool much like the draw tool, but instead of painting pixels it changes just those lines to the currently selected foreground color. (it also hints at the color for each scan line by drawing the color on the right side) I might do an explainer youtube once more features get in and things are more stable.

  43. Because I am tired of mis-information and second or third hand repeated anecdotes, I spent some time this evening and actually took some measurements. This is from an Atari 800 - very early 1979 power board. Covered in dirt, one main cap sort of looks a little puffy. Hasn't been powered up in the 10 years since I got it non-working from Ebay. I took out all 8 electrolytic caps. To measure them, I used my DATS V3 hardware. It takes "high-resolution impedance response measurements with 30,000 data points (1 Hz to 20,000 Hz)". As a capacitance meter it will measure all of a capacitors electrical characteristics including capacitance, equivalent series resistance, Q, and even loss angle. DATS V3 is capable of accurately measure capacitance from 0.002 uF to 10,000 uF. I am enclosing all measured data. The part #, the rated value, and how it measured. TL/DR version - all 8 capacitors were WELL within spec, measuring a few percent over rated micro-farads. ESR was perfectly acceptable. 44. Got my boards from JCLCPB and all the parts DigiKey. Lets see if I can pull this off like Hans. Looks like boards came in with the missing trace, odd. JLCPCB does not stock the FPGA, otherwise I'd have then do the SMT like I do for the TIPI/32K. I may have an extra bare board or two if anyone else want to try the DIY route.

  46. Empire Strikes Back: 1465 Frogger: Rollage (11,369) One tip I'd offer for Frogger is that if you're not sure whether blue turtles are on their way down or on their way up, there is a way to tell. - When the top set of turtles are blue, they are on their way to the surface (and safer to jump on) when the bottom set of turtles are submerged and not visible. - When the bottom set of turtles are blue, they are on their way to the surface if the top set of turtles are on the surface. I'm still trying to come up with a reliable strategy for Empire Strikes Back. I have found that I get more shots in shooting the from behind, especially if I can get my ship going about the same speed as the walkers and am able to dodge their fire. However, when doing this, I'm less likely to score a quick kill by hitting a bomb since there is only one place a bomb can be revealed from behind while there are two places bombs could be hit shooting head on. I get the impression that on this game variation, killing walkers in a single shot by hitting a bomb is key. You get a kill quicker which slows their progress to the right edge of the screen. You also prevent a smart bomb from escaping and chasing you down.

  47. It's been released, there's been some light first party support, the true believers were satisfied, and now I suspect the most logical path forward is counting the days until it's quietly discontinued. They'll probably have <15,000 units produced when all is said and done. I suspect they'll license out the classic controller design at some point, maybe another year or two, and, probably a bit further down the line, the case molds/design. In any case, we'll 100% see the "successful" parts of this project re-appear elsewhere some way, somehow, because Atari is configured in a way to be successful (in its own way) with licensing rather than with direct responsibility for a product. I think the big problem was and always has been this is a low volume production when it needed to be a high volume production to get costs low enough to make it a more mass market price. The only way something like this would have really taken off is with a super low price (though whether it really would sell that much better at a lower price is still arguable, but a different discussion). As it is, technology moves way too fast and there are too many more capable devices already here and/or coming, especially in the portable space. This could have been an early TV-centric version of what we're getting with say the Aya Neo or GPD Win 3, but is too underpowered as-is, with no credible path forward to a VCS 2 to leverage some of the newer tech that might make it a bit more appealing.
