  2. Real life intervened I'm sorry to say. Some things are much much much more important than coding a retro game. We've got to a point where lot of gfx is done, couple levels layout prepared, and now it's my turn to code efficient multi-directional scrolling routine. Because of some serious health issues in my family, I can't focus enough right now, so it will have to wait at least a month or two... Wonderboy will come ... Maybe not this autumn but it will be done one of these days. Cheers! Vladimir

  3. I built the first bin of Zoo Keeper cartridges last night, and will shortly be working on another bin of them. Today I'll also be working on soldering and assembling extra games for all these pre-orders, and that'll take me 2-3 days to complete. Will also be testing and labeling the pre-order 2600 games while I'm doing this (although, sadly, not at the same time). Here's a photo of this first bin of Zoo Keepers: Here's a (more interesting) photo of some Melody boards before I started turning them into Zoo Keepers last night: Back to it! ..Al

  5. Wanted to share a WIP vanilla 4k game with a raycasting engine capable of ~25fps/8 colors. No extra RAM, DPC+, bus stuffing or other cheats, does not even bank switch. Could have been a launch title in 1977 on a 2732. Lots of work needed on the maps / pal colors but there is enough working to give you an idea. I still have 33 bytes left for features... lmk is there is interest in a production version or a writeup as to how it works. cheers btw: If you figure out how to play and get to the end you will likely be only the second human to do so...... runes_of_moria_pal.rom runes_of_moria.rom

  6. It's $30 per year or $50 for two years. This nets you a longer post edit window, more space for your private messages, the "Subscriber" badge, a 5% discount in the AtariAge Store, and other benefits. I won't hide any important functionality behind subscriptions. They do help cover the considerable expense in running AtariAge (about $500 a month), so they are greatly appreciated. I haven't really pushed them very hard, but I should probably make them more visible and a bit easier to find. I just don't want to bash people over the head with them. ..Al

That reminds me, I have a last minute update to the ZK ROM file, I'll send it right away! j/k (Inside joke between Al & I - I've had a few last minute 'updates' to ZK the last few months (e.g. zookeeper_final_rev2_final_update3_final_last_change_I_promise_oops_one_more_rev4.bin) Thanks for all the hard work Al!

  8. Here's a sneak peek at some screenshots of the game that plays when no cartridge is inserted. I'm now at the point that I've run out of room to fit a few more features in, but I'm working on it. Please remember that this will be an 8K game, so it won't be as 'involved' as some other ones: Hope this one turns out ok. I will give it to @ZeroPage Homebrew to review once finished. It will be exclusive only to this BIOS. Thanks, guys

  9. Yes, I am looking forward to this as well. I've already chosen the new store software that will be replacing the current software. It's much nicer overall, has lots of great features, and will give me considerably more flexibility, including offering game ROMs for sale alongside physical games. I will be working on this in earnest once I get these orders shipped. ..Al

Deluxe Pack (Saturn) 40 mins Bomberman - Panic Bomber (PC Engine CD) 10 mins King of the Monsters 2 (Genesis) 12 mins Super Street Fighter 2 (Genesis) 15 mins Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis) 45 mins - We got to the final stage but it was brutal as hell so we didn't last long.

  15. This is important thing. Some Atarimax 8Mbit starts with bank 0 on, and some of them starts with bank 127 on. This is because of minor phisical differences of cartridge production revisions. Because of that there are two types of Atarimax cartridges emulated in Altirra, called "new" and "old". To do correct cartridge image, which will work for everyone, it should be cartridge boot code placed both in bank 0 and 127. Then no matter what version of cartridge you have, it will work on every of them. Additionally we probably don't know which version of Atarimax is emulated on multicartridges, but it doesn't matter, if we will code both banks 0 and 127 in the cartridge image for universal work.

  16. I have had little time to do much organized playing, but I never really played sports games on the Game Gear and I was curious about what I was missing. Game Boy F1 Race - 10 minutes I'm impressed this game works as well as it does. Amazing Penguin - 10 minutes Game Boy Color Woody Woodpecker Racing - 15 minutes Surprisingly fun top down Konami kart racing game! Mickey's Racing Adventures - 15 minutes Surprisingly fun top down Rare kart racing game! A lot of "adventure" stuff in the way of the racing, though Crusin' Exotica - 15 minutes Surprisingly fun behind-the-car racing game! Game Gear Madden '95 - 15 minutes It killed my Game Gear! Seriously, this is great and you should buy it. Madden '96 - 15 minutes This was my favorite Madden on the Genesis, so I was shocked to learn that this was an unlicensed game. No real teams, no real players, and they gave the Lions the Bills colors. Unforgivable. This is somewhat rare but worthless for a reason. It seems to be exactly the same as Madden '95 except with the actual professional football removed. One funny thing I noticed is that this breaks the Mega SG Game Gear adapter - it can't draw the ball right for some reason. Clutch Hitter - 15 minutes I don't know how I got the idea this was the same engine as The Majors/World Series Baseball. It isn't. I like this very early game a lot, though. The behind-the-pitcher perspective is really nice. Why don't other games do that? The Majors - 25 minutes I'm pretty sure this might be the best Game Gear baseball game. RBI Baseball '94 - 25 minutes Or maybe this is? I just love the semi-authentic organ music of this one and the hyper-saturated colors, which are a little hard on the eyes with a good screen but look amazing on the old screen. Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball - 30 minutes You know what, this could have been the best baseball game on the Game Gear. Butter smooth animations, amazingly nice graphics, good sound, a more formal pitch selection system... but there is NO MUSIC AT ALL during games, nor any crowd noise. It's like they're playing baseball in a library. Honestly that doesn't bug me that much, but it makes a big contrast with The Majors and Clutch Hitter and RBI Baseball and their amazing music. This was not a well-reviewed game on most platforms, but I was blown away by how great it looked and how well it played. It would be funny if the Game Gear was the best platform for this title. World Series Baseball - 20 minutes There's a lot to like about this, but surprisingly I don't like it as much as the earlier games. Maybe it's the increased speed or the music. World Series Baseball '95 - 25 minutes There doesn't seem to be a huge difference between this and the first one except a more pallid color palette. Batter Up - 15 minutes I am pretty sure this is the worst Game Gear baseball game. This is essentially like the NES RBI Baseball, which was also developed by Namco. It's not awful, but the constant ridiculous base stealing attempts get old, and the graphics look unpleasant and blobby. James Pond II: Codename Robocod - 15 minutes. This extremely multiplatform game seems like it was made for the Game Gear. I’m sure by the fifth level I will take that back. Genesis MUSHA - 15 minutes Not seriously trying to get far in this, just re-acquainting myself with it. I wish I could get a real cartridge of this. I'd love to see reissues of this series. Whip Rush - 25 minutes Wowee, my Aleste playing had swelled my head a little, but this game just crushed me. I think I am learning it, but wow, it's hard. Vapor Trail - 25 minutes I still suck at this but maybe I'm getting a little better. Vapor Trail. Vapor Trail. Vapor Trail. Exemplary pause design. Last Strike should have stolen that. James Pond II: Codename Robocod - 45 minutes This might be the game I own for the most systems, and I don’t know why. I got good at a few of the levels but in general this is way too sadistic for the cutesiness. Euro platformers, man. PC Engine Afterburner II - 15 minutes This is pretty impressive for the Turbografx and almost competitive with the Genesis. But still pretty slow compared to 32X or arcade. Final Blaster - 20 minutes Wow, this is brutal. Metal Stoker - 25 minutes This is pretty cool. Kinda like Griffin on Game Gear, or an upgraded version of Armor Attack. FACE has a fascinating catalog. Circus Lido - 35 minutes This is a fun and gorgeous single-screen puzzle action game, but it gets brutally hard really fast. It has very unique mechanics. I got stuck and stuck hard on level 5. I feel like they needed to add twice as many levels to introduce you to all these crazy mechanics. Super CD L-DIS - 35 minutes Beautiful cute-em-up, kicked my butt repeatedly. Ninja Warriors - 20 minutes Probably my favorite single plane beat-em-up, but it's still not exactly my thing. Lynx Shanghai - 45 minutes I am getting better, but that's not saying much. SNES Dorke and Ymp - 15 minutes A little Evercade fun. I was too sleepy to get far.

  18. It was an exceptionally big week for gaming around here this past week, mostly on account of me getting my paws on a new game that just came out for the Switch! I put just over 30 hours into Winds of Change this past week, doing a full playthrough of it and doing every side quest and conversation there was to be found. I don't usually get into visual novel style games, in fact I think the last one I played and truly enjoyed was 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors on the original Nintendo DS, but Winds of Change really drew me in with it's art style and kept me hooked with a great story and really outstanding voice acting. I was also just delighted to see a game that's... well, "furry" on a mainstream console like the Switch! I was kinda obligated to buy it, and I'm sure glad I did because I can confidently say that it had the best story and writing I've ever seen in any video game bar none. It's obviously a game intended for the furry crowd, but the quality of the writing and storytelling make it a game that non-furries alike could still get a great deal of enjoyment out of providing you aren't put off by the art style. Outside of Winds of Change I just played a bit of Doom 64 on the Switch (having finally gotten a Limited Run physical copy in the mail) and a few arcade games here and there. I played through Garou: Mark of the Wolves a couple more times and beat the extra secret final boss the second time, then played quite a few games of Galaga and a couple games of Ms. Pac-Man and set new all time personal best high scores in both! I managed to get 130,000 points in Galaga and 70,310 points in Ms. Pac-Man, which I was really happy about considering I had never broken 100K in Galaga before and I'm just not very good as Ms. Pac-Man in spite of it being my all time favorite arcade game. That's all the gaming news from around here that's fit to print for this week though, so until next time and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours Ineligible Doom 64 (Nintendo Switch) - 185 minutes Winds of Change (Nintendo Switch) - 1,935 minutes Arcade Galaga - 63 minutes Ms. Pac-Man - 17 minutes Street Fighter II': Champion Edition - 10 minutes Neo Geo MVS/AES Garou: Mark of the Wolves - 46 minutes Total Video Game Play Time This Week 2,256 minutes (37 hours 36 minutes) [136 minutes eligible] Individual System Play Times This Week Nintendo Switch: 2,120 minutes Arcade: 90 minutes Neo Geo MVS/AES: 46 minutes

Just following - I flashed my SIDE3 with the new Loader version and now all 6 versions of the PoP .CAR that @rensoup has posted load properly on my U1MB-equipped 1200XL - the "official" June 10th builds posted in the first post of the game's thread here, as well as the later three test/demo builds he posted here. So, too, does @Wrathchild's test "no KIL" version he posted here. So all 7 .CAR builds above load perfectly on my SIDE3. ???

  20. Just finished the second bin of Zoo Keeper cartridges! And this still isn't all of them. Will get the remainder built tomorrow. Now have two more bins of pre-order games, so here's an updated photo of the wall of bins.. The two drawers of Zoo Keepers are at the top. And finally, for something different, here are all the folded Zoo Keeper and Venture Reloaded posters needed for these orders. No, they did not come folded! One time I had the printer fold an order of posters, and that ended up being a complete disaster. They didn't score the posters first, so when they folded them there was a solid white line where each fold occurred. I was amazed that they actually sent me the order like that, and yes, they did reprint them. Again, printing is an exercise in fun! ..Al

  21. The project is still ongoing. I noticed something about the arcade version. The little soldier guy who climbs the wall and walks across the top, he's not just there to stop people from hanging around .... it's a form of score system. The further away he is from you , the more points you get. I never knew this. Funny thing is I once made an hunchback clone where you raced a Witch on a broomstick flying through the clouds for bonus points with the very same idea. Except the Witch wouldn't kill you. I'm doing a re-write of the code to ensure I have enough memory to get done what needs to be done. I dearly hope to be able to include the soldier climbing the wall.

  25. Here's an update for the SIDE3 loader which includes some fixes for MegaCart and Sic! cart types, the addition of type 75 (AtariMax 1MB 'New', startup bank 0) and correction of AtariMax 1MB tyie 42 (startup bank 127). s3loader_0.39_150621.zip In addition, a bug in 'Hard Emulation' mode concerning only AtariMax 1MB images has been corrected. Note that the activation of 'Hard emulation' mode is rarely required (and was not even required for the test cases), but a problem was noticed and corrected anyway. Many thanks to @Wrathchild for reaching out by PM regarding issues with the recently released PoP images. Had he not got in touch, I would never have been aware of the issues which required attention (no issues at all having been reported from other sources before these images were released). Apologies for any inconvenience caused and for any confusion regarding the reason for issues (although I understand that the cart images in question had/have some issues of their own, disconnected from the SIDE3 cartridge emulation table errors; nevertheless, everything I was sent now appears to work, whether patched or not). As tirelessly stated already: I am anxious to hear of problems which might plausibly be caused by bugs in the firmware, loader, etc; less so regarding issues caused by software which is self-evidently, or by design, incompatible with the firmware and hardware under discussion. Problems falling into the latter category need to be taken up with the provider of the boot loader, etc. In any case: I would appeciate any testing of the loader update, and once I am sure the corrections did not cause breakage elsewhere, I will absorb this build into the firmware set on the webite.

  27. I think the trolls are everyone which attack xxl here and there in every thread where xbios or other xxl's stuff appear. I think every x-series xxl's products are very good in their purposes. I use x-loader for tapes, which is implemented in newest Turgen system, and it is very good loader, very small and usefull. I use xbootdos too, which has very low memlo, and is very small too (fits in bootsector). Next, xbios is one and only loader which allows to simple game developing for cartriges and floppy paralely. It is small, low memory utilising, and very usefull with many options. As I know, PoP is first big production which is developing such way. So anyone should be helpful instead criticize. Personaly I will use all that xxl's products, because they are just very good. Not only I do think so, other programmers are going in that same direction too, and that's fine. If some time ago and now the people would be helpful to improve xbios instead of trolling, then now we could be part of the progress instead of part of the disruption of the comunity. But I'm sory for off topic, and eot. Good luck with completing the game, which will be very, very good anyway.

This may go all the way to level 20. Of course, I can't ignore the side missions. They aren't quite Witcher level impressive, but they're pretty good coming from an indie studio. Pretty impressed with the game.

  32. TI99 HunchBack.zip < --- Zip file contains EA/5 files, and an XB file, also a small instructions book in JPEG format. Note: If playing on a real TI-99 you will need the F-18A as there are more than 4 sprites lined up together. This was unavoidable. Emulator users can do the following: Classic99 : go into Video options and untick "flicker" JS99er : go to options and select F18A. I've no idea what Mame uses for F18a or no-flicker. Note about the arcade game: Originally , Hunch Back was to be Robin Hood. Hence the castle and pikemen. Esmerelda was Maid Marion! This was altered somewhere along the line, I think I know why. At the time Robin Hood wasn't "trending" it didn't have a Tv Series until 1984 the year after this game launched, and "Hunchback of Notre Dame" was released as a remake film with Anthony Hopkins playing Quasimodo in 1982. So Century would of been going with what was popular at the time. Coincidentally the words "Hunch Back" and "Robin Hood" contain exact fits for character spaces.

  48. Thanks to my Mom, packrat extraordinaire, I will have a wealth of stuff to scan next week related to the Astrosmash Shootoff and the VideoChallenge. Turns out, she has a file folder marked "Intellivision".... I henceforth and forevermore relinquish the right to nag Mom about how much old crap she holds onto... ? One of the items is an itinerary of the trip and it does have a few more details on the games played. Yes, I'm pretty sure we used the modified Astrosmash cartridge with the built in timer. Don't recall how Night Stalker was handled. I remember we all started on "go" but whether that means it was timed or they told us when to stop, I don't know. The itinerary doesn't mention a time limit on either Night Stalker or Astrosmash, but obviously there must have been one on Astrosmash at least and I'm pretty sure there was a time limit on Night Stalker since I clearly remember the crushing humiliation of losing before time ran out. In addition to the VideoChallenge stuff, she also has the 8/20/1982 dated Western Union telegram Mattel Electronics sent out to everyone who qualified for the Astrosmash finals offering a 50" Sony Videoscope projection TV ($2500 value) instead of the all-expenses paid trip to the finals in Houston. Given that we lived in Houston at the time and had just won the VideoChallenge regional, we took the TV. ? I have a photo of it from Mom, but will hold off till I can get a proper scan to share and put that up in a separate thread about the Astrosmash Shootoff competition. I don't ever see that option mentioned in stories about it, so fun to capture that for posterity as well. Plaque photo attached. I also apparently have a photo of my Dad and I with George Plimpton at the finals. I'd totally forgotten about that. I look *awesome*! ? Also attaching a photo from a Clear Lake City local newspaper about the Houston competition. It mentions that Houston was the 1st of the 18 city tournament, so I lucked out there. Several of the eventual finalists had to go to multiple cities in order to make the finals, but at this point I'm guessing no one had any idea about it. We only knew about it the day before after seeing it mentioned in the upcoming events part of the paper.
