  1. Well not strictly true ? I'd started working on the carts a while back... It involved coding at tool to merge all the files in a valid cart format with a simple directory structure and more importantly and block copy function to copy data from ROM to RAM... That function turned out to be a gigantic pain in the butt with a bunch of nasty corner cases! Had I know how much work was involved I may have been more hesitant to do it... Ignorance is bliss! Thanks, that was the goal! The game is being ported in a way I wish had been possible back then... Now whenever people complain that the A8 is not a capable machine, you've got one more bullet for them ?

  2. I was one of the 4 original AMY team members and wrote the 8051 code to control the AMY TTL prototype (500 chips!). The chip was way ahead of it's time. It was a wonderful group and experience. ~Tom Zimmerman

  5. I noticed this in the article as well, bringing up his limiting order size as a negative. I would expect this is intentionally done so that the maximum number of people can get always get the parts they need to service their personal systems. He likely does not want to see someone scooping up the entire supply of specific parts and then immediately 'flipping' them on eBay or Amazon for an exorbitant amount. His making sure the people genuinely interested in keeping their vintage Atari's running can get parts and accessories for their various systems, and for a very reasonable price is a big plus in my book.

  7. A new action/platform game: - Inferno di Cristallo. Inspired by the movie "The Towering Inferno". It's in Italian, unknown author. If someone has some information on this title, please share it! The description is on TI99IUC site (Inferno di Cristallo). I've added a trainer mode, since the game is not so easy... Some bugs fixed. Have fun! 9. https://www.ebay.com/itm/203446240410 A mostly working 1200XL except non functioning keyboard with CLEAR key broken off and top half of RF shield not included. 24 pin OS socket variant with 200ns RAM. Upon receiving it, I noticed the D key was also broken and glued back on (not sitting straight in photo above). Only RESET, START SELECT OPTION worked. All other keys did not. Installing a Best Elec replacement mylar did not change keyboard function, which was actually good news since it meant the mylar or gold finger contacts area was not the cause. Someone else had previously separated the mylar from the PCB in an attempt to restore keyboard function. Installed another machine's top half of the shell with it's working keyboard and that keyboard worked flawlessly in this 1200XL. Doing that helped to determine if it was a keyboard issue or POKEY. Keyboard issue. Replacing the 4051's on the back of the keyboard PCB seemed the best route. First step was to install sockets. Solder work for new sockets. The two joined pins are fine as those are connected on the PCB. Have a mostly non working spare parts 600XL but for whatever reason the 4051's in it worked in an 800XL so I installed them in the new sockets and that fixed it! WORKING keyboard! ? The previous 4051 had messy non-factory flux residue so it looked like someone had worked on it but perhaps did not replace it. The left one was the failed chip. Replaced both to match from the 600XL spare parts machine. Contacted bob1200xl for replacement keys, stems and springs which he very kindly sent, after them sending to him for color match of the keycaps. The computer was still dirty. Here we go. These are the only two photos I have of it before cleaning Neighbor's cat on our porch, will not let me get near her. New plunger from bob. One for D and one for CLEAR with a couple extra plungers to spare (Awesome. I'll need those!) Fully disassembled the top of the keyboard, yuck. Reassembling after full cleaning of keycaps and the backplane. CONTROL, both SHIFT keys and BACKSPACE use a different spring type (more coiled). Space bar uses a third unique type of spring (taller) so these were kept separate from the others. Sprayed deoxit on the springs in a plastic bag to restore and stop/prevent corrosion. They look a LOT better. I recommend doing this sort of thing to preserve your 1200XL's keyboard springs! Be very careful when removing the keycaps and use a proper wire keycap puller and it seems that toggling back and forth a very little bit helps as you pull up. This particular keyboard was difficult to remove each keycap as they snap or lock tight into position, unlike other keycaps I've removed. Note that this keyboard will not separate from the shell since it seems to be glued or stuck with some substance above the CLEAR key. Maybe a soda spill or glue I don't know but it's only in one three inch area along the top of the keyboard. A flat head screwdriver would not pry it off of the case shell. Will try again another day. Cleaned and all keys in place with both broken plungers replaced! She looks much better. Note that the D key is a little higher because some glue residue deep into the keycap from a previous owner remained after Bob removed the stem. Would not snap-lock into the stem due to the rock hard glue residue deep into the keycap. I did not have a drill to do that. There was no need for a previous owner of the computer to glue the broken top half of the stem into place, since it already lock-snaps into place. Sent D key back to Bob today for a replacement or glue removal. Thank you again Bob! Am happy to reimburse you. Still need to clean the case. The restoration is coming along. Will order some polish for the aluminum and transparent window which I've never done but would love to. CLEAR seems to sit a tiny bit high. It is locked into the stem and INSERT is sitting a little low too. Video quality is poor. Looks like how ghosting looks like on modern LCD's. Need to install UAV. Below photo is sharp. That's how it looks. More restoration work to do on it. Thanks for reading!

  12. I find the TI-99 to be quite easy to get into, in regards of tinkering with Basic and general programming. Take Extended Basic for example, there's stuff you can do with that, that is quite good. Graphical commands are easy to learn, there's no POKE commands for example. Try this in normal TI BASIC ... 10 CALL HCHAR(8,1,42,32) ... right there you got a line of asterisks. What more fun could you ask for?! There's some great software coming out for the TI lately. I'd recommend stuff from Rasmus , Sometimes99er, Airshack, PeteE, Bleepbit, TIBASIC, Nanochess, LAsooner, David Vella, Francesco Ugga, Keith Bergman, Tursi, Opry99er. Don't bother with any from Retrospect though, they're shite. Enjoy!

  13. Of course. Any project not subject to maintenance updates is a dead project. Even the most toweringly talented coders on the scene (such as Avery Lee) have to fix bugs in their stuff. The important thing is finding the issues, which I am extremely good at doing immediately after releasing the update.

  14. I decided not to inline the VRAM data reads and writes for this iteration but did use @Asmusr’s suggestion of using DECT with pairs of VRAM data reads and writes. It turns out that, with one other change to the left/right rolls, I do not need to do any single-byte data reads or writes—not a single one! All I needed to do was to do the column roll in the RAM buffer. With that change, all of the VRAM data reads and writes are 32 bytes. This allowed hoisting the count assignment of (always) 32 to the new VRAM row read and write routines. Every screen roll is now 50 VDP address reads/writes. All of this also reduced the code to 342 bytes and resulted in 24 % faster rolls than my last code and nearly 3 times (2.8) faster than the RXB (all) single-byte VRAM data reads and writes. Here is the code: The up and down rolls work as before, but the right and left rolls now work as follows: Right Roll— Move first row from VRAM to FAC+1. Move byte at FAC+32 to FAC, effecting the right roll for this row. Move 32 bytes from FAC to original row location in VRAM. Repeat (1) – (3) 23 more times to complete right roll of screen. Left Roll— Move first row from VRAM to FAC. Move byte at FAC to FAC+32, effecting the left roll for this row. Move 32 bytes from FAC+1 to original row location in VRAM. Repeat (1) – (3) 23 more times to complete left roll of screen. If I worked a little harder, I could probably combine the up/down routines as well as the right/left routines—the pairs are practically identical, but, right now, I think the above code is pretty solid. ...lee

  15. I think some misunderstandings arise when a customer may not realize the community service that Best Electronics (or the AtariAge Store, for that matter) provides. It's not always obvious, and a little hard to explain if you aren't in the community. But once one understands that, you're just thankful that Bradley still does what he does. We all benefit from his life's work.

  16. This article is practically a hit piece. It is very one-sided and comes across as having been written by an unsatisfied customer or some impatient Gen-Z with unreasonable expectations. It only serves as a reminder of how Amazon and eBay have really spoiled a lot of online shoppers. If nothing else, the writer could have linked to the Best feedback page right here on AA. I myself have had nothing but excellent buying experiences from Best. If anything, I actually enjoy and appreciate that he still handles orders the way they originally were done online back in the day, and that the website is kept to simple text, hypertext, and a few images.

  17. Yes, never had a bad experience. TBF, the author of this article offered to interview Bradley, but, well, anyone who's called recently can imagine how much time he has for that. He's not Amazon, he's an independent businessman trying to meet a ridiculous level of demand, all the while charging reasonable prices for things others are gouging enthusiasts for on eBay, and everything always arrives in pristine condition. People's expectations need to change, not Bradley, IMHO.

  18. I am disappointed that this article is very one-sided and doesn't interview people whom had much different interactions with Bradley/Best. Yes, buying from him is "different" than people's expectations these days, but if you understand that and work with Bradley, it can be a very pleasant experience. I for one, have order lots of items from Best, and there are times Bradley would tell me I would need to break up that order over a period of months (ordering ICs and motherboards for my Atari Portable project), and so that's what I would do. The results? He would respond right away to emails, I would pay right away, and the next day the package would be in the mail, well packed and perfect when it arrived. I understand that other's might have had different experiences, but I don't believe I am one of the few that have had great results.

  23. To return on topic (already regretting letting myself getting dragged into this shit, but there's a limit to what I can accept and hold my tongue): Already posted in the U1MB 4.0 firmware thread but some may not read that: I flashed the new Side3 loader and all cartridge versions of PoP I throw at it now load absolutely fine in both NTSC and PAL ANTIC setting of AntiX. To be complete this is my system: Atari 600XL (PAL machine) PAL GTIA U1MB StereoPOKEY Sophia 1 RGB AntiX (makes it possible to switch between PAL and NTSC ANTICs) My display is a Bang & Olufsen MX8000 CRT TV using the beautiful RGB picture coming from Sophia 1 RGB through the SCART input. Glad I asked about this. It triggered Rensoup to release the cartridge versions (completely omitting the need for XBIOS) and FJC to make a small fix to Side3 loader. it works: I’m happy I'd also like to thank Rensoup and all the others for their amazing work and time in this project. It makes the A8 shine.... here’s a picture of it in PAL ANTIC setting: and here in NTSC: As expected there are some color differences and of course the NTSC plays much more fluent. Really wouldn't bother with PAL when playing, just MHO.

  24. Geez, acting like a kid is really your best asset isn't it ? Neither Lotharek's nor FJC's websites claim full ATR emulation. Here are 2 screenshots.....first is from Lotharek, 2nd from FJC. Maybe it's your limited mastering of English, but maybe look up in a English to Polish dictionary what the word "LIMITED" means. Also, hopefully, the exclamation mark means the same in Polish as it does in English.... While you're at it, look up the word "SOME" as well.... Neither LIMITED nor SOME have the same meaning as the word "FULL".......

  27. debatable! You can select the minimum redraw speed in the option menu... the previous version were set to 3 for PAL and 4 for NTSC, if I remember correctly. That means the game will wait at least 3/4 frames before redrawing the next one. Which rarely happened (only in very bare rooms) 50/3 = 16.9fps 60/4 = 15fps For this release I made some changes to stabilize NTSC and somehow the game got faster ? and suddenly the PAL version was running in 3 frames a bit too often which made the game a little too speedy. So I changed it to 4. 50/4 = 12.5fps 60/4 = 15fps The game can now feel a little faster in NTSC but I encourage you to set the frame limiter to 2 and you'll see the game can be too fast in both PAL/NTSC

  31. It’s the kind of packing tape that gets coated with hot glue with a special machine when being applied. I have had nothing but good experiences the few times I have ordered. But I go into every interaction understanding that he owes me nothing and I need him a lot more than he needs me. A lot of the people interviewed didn’t seem to be angry or negative about it, just wry. I was pleasantly surprised by how little entitlement was on display. It’s a great point that he and the other warehousers have done a lot to prevent price gouging and profiteering. (Although… *looks at Video 61’s prices*… hmmm.) I am afraid of an article like this wrecking his ability to do business and potentially shutting down an essential service. I hope that doesn’t happen.

  38. https://thebrewingacademy.com/collections/myteks-576nuc-atari-computer the ordering links for the 576NUC+ are up so you can get an idea of cost, they will go live soon. I'm biased as I am on the beta team for this device but for the cost I don't think it can be beat for a modern solution using original chips. As for the 1050 that's going to be a little more difficult if you really want to use real disks. If not then get the NUC with the FUJINET option and you should be good to go.

  39. most of your troubles are concerned with running SDX on 64k machine - that immediatly runs you into the trouble of having memlo too high for almost any software to load - normally all SDX drivers and libraries would be located in banked memory, leaving you with pretty low memlo to work with unfortunatly, if $2000 memlo barrier is crossed, trouble beginns side3 stand-alone operation was well described in FJC videos - basically what you bought yourself is a game loading device - either cartridge images or xex files, with very limited ATR support through soft-modified OS - stuff that runs on atari 800 with 48k will work, but not so much when it comes to anything from XL/XE era if you pair your side3 with u1mb it becomes not only a cartridge you can load games from, but so called new-device or a pbi-device if you will with full support under Atari OS - that means you could boot anything that follow Atari OS rules from it (use SIO calls for transmission, not going through pokey registers enforcing custom serial input/output routines) unfortunatly such software also exists, moreover, it's activly promoted by some people over past few years SIO over PBI - 62kbytes/s on stock machine, 480kbytes/s on accelerated one, 1MBytes/s with DMA side3 is providing custom pokey routine - 120kbits/s with standard disk drive or any currently available disk drive emulator you can buy yet some people think slower is better

  42. Great, yeah I'll wait for that for sure. Don't be so hard on yourself..... not a programmer on this world who doesn't have to fix bugs. Your work, as always, is awesome.

  43. Yes, so you can omit XBIOS and forget all about it's features.

  45. Never bought from Best. Perhaps I can be more objective? The article does point out that he’s done a good thing by keeping all those parts, developing new parts, etc. Seems to paint him as a selfish monopolist tho, which isn’t nice, even if the writer points out it’s an accidental monopoly. I sometimes wish I could afford to do the same. Makes me wonder if the writer’s ever worked in retail of customer service; sometimes the sale doesn’t seem to be worth the stress. Wonder where he gets the Atari tape. Doesn’t packing tape dry out? He’s bought 8,000 pallets over the years, most from Atari Corp’s closure...how big is that warehouse? 8000 pallets would take up over 120,000 square feet, assuming each pallet is 4x4.

  46. I think I may try inlining all of the VRAM reads and writes as well. It will likely bloat the code a bit, but I bet not by much. ...lee

  47. I was researching through some old video game mags and found this pic in the March 1979 issue of Interface Age - the admin of the APF Facebook group said it's probably a prototype, but no one seems to have seen this before. Sorry for the blurry pic, if anyone has a better copy of that issue, please post it!

  49. I'm on it! This game is SUPER close to being complete... just needs a final validation of all known fixes then we can approve the ROM for production. Box is already designed, so it's only the sticker and manual after that.

  50. I actually placed an order with Best earlier today. Called, provided my customer number and paid for my items, all without issue.
