The ABBUC site is back online: http://abbuc.de The forum registration is open: http://abbuc.de/forum To ensure, members can access member only pages, and can´t, if their membership rests or ends (by not paying the membership fee) I activate each registration manually for starters. So it might a few hours, until you´re really in. I expect to open registration for non-members (can´t see the member sections of the website and the forum, can´t access the shop) after SillyVenture (that will be three days where I´m simple not available for anyone who´s not in Gdansk ). If you have any trouble registering, please send an email to internet@abbuc.de Cheers, Sascha11 points

Looks like my post from the Atari Museum facebook group (which I'm also in charge of) already made it over. To make it clear, as Curt's partner in the Atari Museum I have the efforts to relaunch, maintain, and update the site for the future under control. Nobody else has any authorization. Look for it in the coming weeks. That being said, it's never stopped anyone from wholesale copying the site or it's material in the past and Curt just usually ignored it because frankly it wasn't worth the effort. Likewise any claims of working with the family or me ducking someone refusing to work with them are false. Point blank when Curt died, within a day or so both myself and Curt's family were inundated with threatening emails from Mr. McLemore threatening lawsuits, federal investigations and other "big stick" tactics. I and the family have copies of everything. He is lying when he claims he's "been working with them". His wife is still grieving heavily and facing huge financial issues left behind and his wife as an infectious disease specialist is still very busy with Covid issues in New York. When Curt first died I posted a status that I would be going in at some point to go through everything and doing my best to try and get things back to people that Curt was either working on or had borrowed. Yet Mr. McLemore continued to harass with hyper-aggressive threats in his emails. Per my talks with the family I chose not to respond because frankly once he escalated things to those types of legal threats it's out of my hands. He continued and I blocked him on Facebook and elsewhere. I also made sure copies of all those emails were distributed just in case claims like these were to be made in the future. His current efforts now with the site also seem to be based on the same quick rush in strong arm tactic than anything genuine, like he's looking at this as just another thing to try and take over for something he feels he's owed. For everyone else, I will still be going in to help the family out with items people are owed. My trip last October was delayed due to the covid upsurge. The plan is to go in soon, assess everything there overall, separate the items people are owed and arrange to ship them out (which I'll probably be paying out of pocket). The Atari Museum website (the official one) will be relaunching again soon in an updated format along with sections for our book and other initiatives that will involved other people lined up to be involved with the site as well.10 points

I'm still playing around with this one in my spare time, so here's a new "demo" or "screensaver" or whatever.... I'm going for the NES/Coleceo/MSX kind of look, like the original, and this has some transitions that look similar to me. It's only visual, just a demo for my testing: aatest.rom8 points

All the discussion is odd. rensoup did a rather unique job, and so it is his own opinion that counts. The only thing that nags me is that I always have to set SFX Bank 2 by hand when starting the game Actually , I wonder why he is getting so involved in supporting so many expansions. Without that, the game might have been finished already. If expansions don't work with such a game, it is a problem of the expansions. As long as it runs on a stock Atari from a stock floppy drive, or from a plugged cart, everything should be fine. The arts in the game are fabulous, and also, there is NO comparision, as there exist not a dot of a compareable game on the Atari.7 points

He must have tremendous skill at being able to talk himself up. He does appear to have been able to walk into some plum jobs along the line (assuming there is in fact a kernel of truth in that he worked at MGM, EA and Bullfrog, though not necessarily that he did all he claimed at those places). And yet he doesn't really seem to have produced much of anything in terms of tangible results, AvP apart. At least in gaming, can't speak to the side of things where he was Captain Littlegirlsocks who got his commercial pilot's license at age 20. Somehow he manages to wring these endorsements out of people and convince them he's some kind of genius. It's really peculiar. And harmful, too, if upcoming devs look to him for industry expertise and guidance that just isn't there. I think I find it all specifically weird because the scene he fixates on - Atari in the Jag era - is a place where I actually was, and I knew a lot of the people he talks about, and the story he tells about his central place in it all is so at odds with my actual lived experience that it makes my brain hurt. But yeah, I too wonder how so many journos (and, it seems, business people too) have just bought into it all without checking out the facts. I guess the gift of the gab backed up with a few kernels of truth goes a long way.6 points

Exactly. When you look at how badly Atari was managed, how little money they had, and how short-staffed they were compared to companies like Sega and Sony, it's already a miracle that the Jaguar actually got released and managed to survive for a few years. Including even a "dumb" CD-ROM drive requires additional and significant manpower, time and money ; luxuries than the 1993 Atari couldn't afford. Since both the Lynx and their computer business were winding down by then, and they were competing against many other console manufacturers, they had to release something.5 points

Some of the jobs are actually true. The twist there being that Jane never seemed to last more than a few months which implies failed probationary periods. But the fact they still got the jobs in the first place really speaks to their skill at bulls**ting. Why Jane chose a career in games instead of politics is beyond my understanding.4 points

We just went through a similar thing with a different individual who managed to fool a lot of people into thinking he was a legitimate "expert" on gaming: Both Jane Whittaker and Kieren Hawken appear to come from the same mold. the main difference being that Jane actually did some legitimate work in the industry (and, of course, the strange sock fetish). Just like what happened with Mr. Hawken, Jane's lies are going to catch up with him.4 points

Having been right in the middle of things, I can clear some of this up. What Jane lacks in development or management skills, they more than make up in manipulation skills. Jane understands how to speak to people, how to come across as a friendly person sympathetic to your own struggles. Says exactly what you want to hear, and promises exactly what you want (In my case, I wanted to move on from small-time freelance work and establish myself more in the industry, Jane promised such with their (alleged) impressive background and connections. Why wouldnt I work for someone with such leverage in the industry? Its a dream come true for someone who struggled to get their foot in the door up to then. THEN they play to your emotions. Keystone Games was supposedly set up to donate profits to kids charities. Youd be a monster to claim that was a lie, right? I mean who would be so nefarious as to lie about these things? There was actually an article given to me a couple weeks ago that describes exactly how Jane operated. It spoke of 'Covert Narcissists'. As for journalists avoiding this topic, its most likely the diversity-shield putting them off. The moment someone publicly calls Jane out, they'll attempt to brand them as hate-criminals. Claim theyre being sent threats and whatnot. Nobody wants that kind of label on them, and Jane wears that armour well. Honestly I think Janes biggest weapon is the naivety of others. If you hadnt met an individual like Jane, would you ever imagine someone was able to lie so easilly and freely about the things theyre lying about?4 points

Robin Harbron checks out this project in his latest video and concludes that C64 BASIC + Kernel running on an Atari 1200XL is about 17-20% faster than when it runs on a real C64C. It probably was expected given the Atari has a higher clock frequency.4 points

A much more eventful week for gaming around here this week! To start off the week I wrapped up my playthrough of Doom 3 on the Switch, then went back and revisited a handful of 16-bit era games. First I did a quick playthrough of Mortal Kombat II on the 32X, which is definitely my favorite (and I'd argue the best) home console port of MK II. After that the misses joined me to play some Castlevania: Bloodlines on the Genesis, trading off the controller between levels. We didn't manage to beat it, but we did get to the last level which isn't too bad considering we're both out of practice Next up I spent some time playing Contra III for the SNES, and while I didn't make it very far into the game it was still a lot of fun to play. Having not done terribly well at Castlevania or Contra, I decided to revisit my all time favorite SNES game Star Fox! I really know this game like the back of my paw and had no problem beating it without using any continues, which was really satisfying after bombing out at the previous two games. Finally, to cap off the week I started yet another playthrough of my all time favorite game Alien: Isolation. It's one of those games that no matter how many times I beat it I'm always happy to come back and spend some more time in it's world, and this time around I dropped the difficulty down from the Nightmare setting I played it on last time to Hard for a more leisurely experience and decided to go for 100% completion and find all the collectibles this time around; which is something I've never done before. So far, so fun! I appreciate the kind words! Still having a lot of fun with the project so I have no intentions of ending it any time soon. In fact, now that research libraries are opening back up I'm able to get out and start going over resources that have been out of reach for the past year and a half. The rest of 1981 on the release calendar is practically one notable game after another so with any luck I'll be keeping ya'll busy for the months ahead. and then there's 1982... I also recognize Stellar Track isn't for everyone - it's a game I didn't really get as a kid, but coming to it as an adult for this series I actually really like it (much to Rob Zdybel's surprise; I got an email from him after the video went up remarking that I made it sound like it was good)!4 points

If you can drive from Sunnyvale to Disneyland in 6 hours, you must be going through L.A. at 2am in either direction. It's more like a 7-8 hour drive if you hit any normal traffic on either end. Unless there was also an anecdote about a private jet and probably a helicopter at each airport, there is no way any call was going to be responded to on the same day in that arrangement.4 points

The Playdia launched at the end of 1994, the Jag one whole year earlier, you can't use that as an example that the Jaguar could have had the same price c'mon, if Atari could have sold the cart based unit at 199US$ at launch they would have (they reduced the price and sold the "core system" in March 1995 for 150US$ no pack in game ... that because their sales numbers were already bad, the timing wasn't terrible mind you as the PS1/Sat had not launched yet in US at that point but they were a known quantity already from the JP launch and magazine previews). From your ads aside the Philips/Mitsumi at 179/189 the rest of the cheap examples do not say 1x or 2x, so it is hard to judge what you get really. You keep on going on consumer sub 99$, the example you showed was for a KOSS CD player (CDP300 it seems) which is 1x as that is all that is needed to play music and it tells little else, I'm pretty sure in the 8years since the first portable audio CD player was launched by Sony at 350US$ the price would have gone down in the portable audio CD player market segments. No console launched with a 2x drive in 1993 for less than 300/350, the Jag launched for 250, adding a 2x CD then (or replacing the cart slot if you prefer) would have added at least 50/75US$ to the final price, again and obviously in my opinion. So in the end and as somewhat expected I think we'll agree to disagree, I personally have decided that the story I believe is that Atari could not pull off a CD based console at end of 1993 for < 300/350 as such they rather went with a cart based system for 249US$, you are fully entitled to your opinions and theories of course.4 points

Runner Bear: 2,508 My best tip for Runner Bear: you get four continues. Use them for practice! Your score resets after death, so it won't help you in the HSC, but you'll be able to see which obstacles are coming up and practice tricky sections. The next time you start from the beginning, you should be able to get much farther.4 points

That there’s a funny game! Bravo for getting another title in the can. You’re really developing an eye for sophisticated entertainment. Nephew and I both broke into tears over the hilarious gameplay! He asked me why someone would do such a thing. Great sounds! The target (bum) should flash red each time you get one in there. Turd drop was fair for a few levels but then gameplay just went into the toilet. Overall: Four Flushes out of Five.3 points

PC Magic: the Gatheing Arena (444 min) Rimworld (660 min) Oculus Quest Beat Saber (301 min) Will I ever play something different? History says yes, brain currently says no, not in the foreseeable future, lol. The RW colony is about to get overly unwieldy. I may have expanded too quickly and now I'm going into winter with not much food stockpiled. Crossing my fingers things work out... Still playing at least a bit of MTGA every day. I'm gold tier 2 ranked in Limited (draft) competition, but I can barely win a game in Ranked (free play, I do well, but going into Ranked is scary), which is a great example of skill vs $$$. Still having fun though. I was finally able to update Beat Saber and keep my mods and custom songs. The Oculus BS mod needed reworking and it didn't update in February, so I didn't update BS either. Six months later, I can finally update, use the new UI, get the new free songs, as well as the new DLC. So that was cool.3 points

@digdugnate, I don’t need to tell you, but Dig Dug II is the definition of a hidden gem. I like it maybe even a bit more than the original. I thought the DS game that fuses the two games into one complete experience was really ingenious and a ton of fun, one of my favorite retro updates ever. I was very light this week as well. Turbografx CD: Ys Books I & II - 490 minutes. Played through Ys I in two sittings. (It would have been one if not for all the backtracking in Darm Tower.) It took about 15 tries to kill Dark Fact, who was the only boss I really struggled with. There is zero fat in this game experience. Respawns are virtually instantaneous, cutscenes are automatically skipped, there are fast exits from every menu. It makes the DS remake look tragically incompetent. I missed the golden vase, but otherwise I completed it 100%. Genesis: Phelios - 30 minutes. I got to the start of chapter 4 in easy mode on my first try. I am starting to remember the various tricks and should be able to finish easy mode next time. I played it on a Nomad with an original screen, which is a bit of a handicap. If you have an Evercade and the Namco cart with it, do yourself a favor and give it a shot. The trick is holding down the B button to charge your shot for the entire game then momentarily pressing A or C to fire the charged shot. That way you’re always ready. I said before that this was a Dragon Spirit spiritual sequel, but it also incorporates a lot of the feel of Final Blaster, which similarly depends on your normal charged shots and makes weapons upgrades a secondary concern. Atari 7800: Dark Chambers - 100 minutes Started on Easy and played through to level J on Advanced. Final score 456270. I kind of got sloppy towards the end because I didn’t intend to play for this long. One on One Basketball - 20 minutes I couldn’t believe it when I first broke the backboard. This is really sophisticated and plays really, really well, but the AI is so bad that if I were Larry Bird or Dr J I would have sued. I wish I had local friends into 7800 games.3 points
