  6. When I was a kid I had this pinball machine. It was It was maybe 3-4 feet long or so, elevated about 4-6 inches above the ground, had what looked like 3/4 scale balls, but it had Real Bumpers and Real Flippers. The bumpers lit up when hit, too. Unfortunately I can't remember what it was called. Once, I got a ball forever stuck under the rubber band triangle and the company sent me a free 5 pack of balls. It seemed a lot cooler than all the toy pinballs ya can buy now, and was almost like the real thing. And I've never seen one on eBay, but like I say I can't remember what it was called, or the company that made it. (Kinda wish I still had it)...

  12. My Ten Favorite Games of 2021 Since the year has past, I thought it was time to assess the new games that I played this past year, and determine my favorites. These are the ten that left the biggest impression on me: Castlevania Advance Collection I had Aria of Sorrow on the GBA when it was contemporary, and I loved it. It's still one of my favorite Castlevania games. Well, this collection includes that game as well as the other two which were released for that handheld. I've been loving these Konami collections from the past few years, particularly the Contra and regular Castlevania sets. This one is right up there with those. Cruis'n' Blast This game is pure arcade racing action, full of over-the-top fun. My only nitpick would be that some of the races are too short. 2 to 3 minutes per race is probably perfect for this type of game, and many are in that range, but some are under a minute. Regardless, what's here is fun as heck. I love unlocking new vehicles to try out and upgrade, and some of the tracks are just crazy in presentation and everything they throw at you. I actually played this arcade cab at our Disney World hotel a couple years back, and loved it then, so I was excited to see it get a Switch port. Now they just need to port Sega's ATV Slam and all will be right with the arcade racer world. Gleylancer I never played the original release on the Mega Drive, mainly because it was never released in the US and I didn't start importing until the last few years. Man, what a great shoot 'em up this is. In particular, I like the varied stage design, and how customizable your ship is. There are times you go vertically, horizontally or somewhere in between, or even have to make your own path by blasting through blocks or something. And the bosses are often clever, sometimes with multiple forms. There are great cutscenes with a story that all feels reminiscent of the original Macross/Robotech series. It's all just brilliant, a truly memorable experience. Metroid Dread I never got into the FPS Metroid games, but I loved Super Metroid on the SNES as well as Metroid Fusion on the GBA. This game is very much in the vein of those titles. Maze exploration, puzzle solving, 2D side-scrolling action platforming, aiming weapons, learning boss patterns, etc, etc. I love this style of gameplay, and it's good to see the franchise returning to its core roots. There are a glutton of FPS games on the market, stick to what you do best, Metroid. Raiden IV Mikado Remix While I never played the original arcade, Raiden IV was one of my favorite games for the 360. Then a few years later, they came out with Overkill which changed up the gameplay to more of a free-flow chain combo style. This release features all of those modes and a ton of new music, and I can play it portably on the Switch. It's like one of those "Game of the Year" releases where they throw everything and the kitchen sink in. Having not played the game in at least 4 or 5 years, and now having a complete edition that I can take with me on the go, I've fallen in love with it all over again. R-Type Final 2 I loved the original R-Type games on the SMS and SNES, and was pumped when R-Type Final came out on PS2. I never played the PS1 game(s?) though, I need to rectify that. But when I played Final for PS2, I didn't realize that they actually meant it. It's been nearly twenty years since that game, and now we finally have its follow up. It's challenging and fun, and it plays like a worthy addition to the R-Type franchise. You'd think that after the long layoff, the gameplay would lose something, or play differently, and while there are some new additions and differences here, the game is R-Type through and through. Great game and a real treat for fans of the franchise. Late 2020 releases that I played in 2021 Cyberpunk 2077 As a longtime fan of the genre (I grew up with Bladerunner on Betamax and Snatcher is my favorite SCD game), I was awaiting this game for years. And it kept getting pushed back more and more to the point that it became a joke, similar to Duke Nukem Forever. Well, it finally arrived, and I played through the whole game and really enjoyed it. It's a vast, immersive futuristic world they've created, and it's easy to get lost in for hours at a time. The story is compelling and the gameplay is varied and engaging. I loved it. I understand that the game had a bunch of technical issues on some consoles, but other than an occasional glitch here or there, I didn't really have any problems. The game itself is impressive, so it's a shame it was marred by technical issues for so many. Panzer Dragoon Remake They took the classic original Saturn game, and made it pretty, much smoother and it controls a bit more intuitively. What's not to love? PGA Tour 2K21 For modern gamers, golf video games have left a lot to be desired the past two generations. In the wake of EA's severance with Tiger Woods, there have been few golf games released on consoles. For those in the know, there were two releases in The Club series for the XB1 and PS4 that were very good. These games had great gameplay and golf physics, but not a ton of depth in the way of seasons/careers, and no PGA license. Well, 2K Sports got the PGA license and hired the Club game designers to make this game, and it is solid. I imagine their next iteration will be even better. Under Night In-Birth Great 2D fighting game with tons of character and elaborate animations. And the gameplay has that Street Fighter-esque easy to pick up and play, but difficult to truly master feel to it. I think this is an update of an older PS3 era game, but I never played that one, just this Switch version. Overall, it reminds me of Darkstalkers on steroids.
