  1. AtariArchives has some useful A8 books online.

    http://www.atariarchives.org/

I already have a ton of software and games for my Atari 8-bit collection.

What I would like to see is Atari 8-bit Books and Manuals scanned for a collection.

These are books, magazines, video game and application manuals all scanned in

.PDF format for the Atari 8-bit computers.

I know these things exist for other platforms (such as websites like http://www.gamemanuals.net and http://www.replacementdocs.com), but they don't have anything for the Atari 8-bit computers.

  2. Some of those missing titles are very familiar, but the best strategy for me might be to make up a list of what I have and compare it to your list. But I just moved, and it will be a while before I have enough leisure time for that. I'm assuming these are all disk based games? I have a Star Trek cartridge game for example, but I don't think I have a disk version.

Attached is our updated list of Atari 8-bit games that have not been dumped yet, some 1,300 programs! Though by no means complete as it mostly concentrates on commercial software, it should persuade you that there are still many lost titles on old tapes and disks in need to be archived.

    <snip>

    Thanks in advance!

  3. Are you talking about a printed-circuit-trace? If so, I'd probably solder a jumper across the "break."

One of my 130XE's has a problem with the same row of keys.

After removing the keyboard I had someone hold down on the keys while I tested for continuity where it connects to the motherboard. No connection no matter what key was pressed.

After opening up the keyboard I couldn't see any breaks in the circuit and I was able to determine that keypresses were making a connection.

I traced the circuit for the line that goes to all those keys and tested it at the other end. Nothing.

After several more minutes of testing in various places I narrowed it down to within 1/8 on an inch to where the circuit is broken. There is no visible break but it certainly doesn't conduct electricity through that spot.

The "break" is along the edge where it passes clear along the bottom side of the keyboard.

I haven't decided on what method I'll use to fix it.

  4. I came across my old Pong game while packing for a move several weeks ago. The move is accomplished, but unfortunately, I have lost track of Pong again. (Lots of boxes will remain in storage.) If I ever find it, I'm going to dust it off and see if it works.

  5. You got a good deal for $10. Does the 400 work? Pretty much I kept my Atari 800 to play Star Raiders more than any other game. It's a common cartridge, but a lot of fun in its day.

    I picked up a A400 and 10 carts for $10.

    Box and Cart:

    Kickback

    Submarine Commander

    River Rescue

    Cart only:

    Soccer

    Nightstike

    Droids

    Pole Position

    Star Raiders

    Defender

    Pac-Man

Here's a link if ya wanna take a peek...

    http://home.comcast.net/~zeptari/8bit/a400games.jpg

Any of these games rare or at least fun to play?

Ohhh and the A400 is in real bad shape..

    I guess I'm looking for a real cheap A800XL....

  6. I agree. A card punch like that is heavy. So the shipping cost would be prohibitive. Maybe a computer museum would want it, although I don't know of any brick-and-mortar computer museums in NJ. If it has a stepper motor and some solenoids, maybe someone would want those for a hobby project.

I need to get rid of this thing. Im going to put this on ebay I guess and if it doesn't sell then anyone here can feel free to have it, provided you will pick it up here in Nj. It goes from Ebay to you guys then, if all else fails, the trash

Trying to sell big heavy things like that on eBay is generally silly. The big lure of eBay is its nationwide (even international) exposure. Nobody who isn't within driving distance of you is going to be interested, so what's accomplished by having people in California see your listing? The only way something like that could turn out to be useful is if someone was still using that same model of keypunch for some reason but XJ3 connecting rod broke, in which case they might offer you $25 for the connecting rod (plus $10 to ship it) and nothing for the rest of the machine.

A better bet would be to ask around locally to find out who near you collects that sort of stuff. Such people do exist, and if one happens to live near you he might take it off your hands. I wouldn't expect to get much money for it, but even if you give it away free that's much more satisfying than junking it.

  7. Someone suggested selling the magazines grouped by year, but I don't have any complete years. But I hadn't thought about selling in lots of 3 or 6. I suppose that would appeal to someone looking for a particular issue to round out their collection.

That is a good question about which Atari computers I'm selling. I have 4 and plan to keep maybe two, and I haven't decided which ones to sell. I have a 400, a 800, a 800XL, and a 130XE. The 800 was the one I used the most, so I'm leaning toward keeping that one. All are in excellent condition and recently tested with disk drives and joysticks and cartridges and disk based programs. Which would you keep?

I had hoped to sell some of my collection before the move, but it took me a while to check out ebay and marketplace. So, unfortunately, I simply do not have enough time left to deal with the logistics of selling any of this stuff until after the move. I'll unpack it again in a couple of weeks. Unless someone is desperate for particular magazine issues or a power supply or something.

I'm holding off listing my Antic and ANALOG magazines for sale because I'm moving in about 10 days. Preparing for that is taking all my free time. I have a couple of Atari computers and disk drives and peripherals that I'm going to offer too, either here in Marketplace or on Ebay. I'm keeping a couple of other Atari computers and drives. Pulling all my Atari stuff out and finding this forum has rekindled my interest.

    What computers are you selling?

Will you sell any of the Antic mags in lots of 3, 6 or 12?

    -thanks

    Rick

  8. Thanks for the pointer to craigslist. Is there a charge for the want ads? I couldn't tell from a quick look.

I've owned other game systems too. But mostly waybackwhen I was less into gaming and more into programming 6502 based machines including the Atari and Commodore computers and before that some machines that were much more primitive.

I guarantee you there are other people interested in retro-gaming and classic equipment in general, within your *general* area.

This site is Atari-oriented, but almost everyone here is not solely interested in Atari equipment... It is a part of a larger whole.

Does Craigslist serve your local area? Somewhere nearby you is a 30-something man thinking about picking up an Atari via eBay, but putting it off because he doesn't want to hassle with it, and hoping he will come across the stuff cheap, randomly, at a garage sale or thrift store. And he may... but, if he sees a local machine advertised inexpensively, without shipping, without the risk of eBay, he might jump on that, too. You just have to reach these people.

  9. There once was a large Atari community around here, but that was back in the days when dialup BBSs reigned. I don't know any local Atarians anymore.

Unfortunately, I'm coming to the conclusion that it's not worth the effort of trying to sell some of my hardware, especially when the shipping costs exceed the value of the hardware.

You're probably right... Selling locally seems to be the way to go.

  10. Thanks. I remember Best Electronics now you mention it. I've been out of the Atari loop too long :( Heh, and a pokey chip cost $5.00 for a computer that's probably only worth $5.00. Oh well, I'll open it up just the same and have a look when I have time. I have another 400 that works fine, so I've been keeping the broken one for spare parts. (Actually, I've had them both in a closet for over 10 years.)

Do you have a source for these chips?

Best Electronics is a good source. Very responsive to questions and quick shipping...

    -Brian

  11. I paied 20$ For my 800XL in the original box and all.

Good for you. What did you pay for shipping?

Unfortunately, I'm coming to the conclusion that it's not worth the effort of trying to sell some of my hardware, especially when the shipping costs exceed the value of the hardware.

  12. Do you have a source for these chips? I have a 400 on which I wrote "bad Pokey" years ago. Symptom is that it powers up to the blue screen but without notepad and won't run cartridges or anything else. I've got lots of experience troubleshooting computer hardware, so when I get some time, I was going to open it up and take a look. Having access to spare parts would be good.

He's right, a normal joystick hasn't worked. But it's not the controller where the POKEY resides, it's on the 5200's motherboard. I'm just trying to figure out if a bad POKEY would cause nonresponsiveness from a working Trak-Ball

It could, but replace the ch1 4052 chip first. It's an easier job anyway (especially if socketed).

  13. I also got several emails to an address that is not the one I use on ebay. It demands that I ship an item that the sender won in "my" ebay auction. Besides this being the wrong address, I have not auctioned anything, so I assumed this was a scam of some sort and ignored it. I suppose I should send it to ebay's scam email site, but I get so much scam mail that I put it off, and they stopped coming as of yesterday.

This came to my personal e-mail, which is not my eBay e-mail....

  14. Wow, that's a long list. I was getting the impression (mostly from this forum) that almost all Atari software was out there already. I have a lot of disks besides those associated with the issues of Antic and ANALOG that I have. I'll sort through them when I get some free time. Off hand, I think I might have some of the missing APX games. Unfortunately, at the moment I don't have any way to upload them except maybe through an old sx212 modem. But I'm handy with a soldering iron, and I was toying with the idea of building a SIO2PC.

If you find some old disks with programs that are still MIA, please let us know. We have a big list of games that still need to be tracked down: http://www.atarimania.com/MIA_January_2006.zip

    Thanks!

  16. Yeah, that's my memory of it too, though I haven't programmed in Action in 10 years. There is probably a statement to that effect in the Action docs. I have all my Atari stuff pulled out of the closet in preparation for an impending move, so I'll check it when I get home.

    Stand-alone programs = no issue.

If I remember correctly, they also had the runtime libs licenced to be freely included with commercial software too.

In any case, it's a non-issue due to the fact it's been considered Abandonware for almost 15 years by now.

  17. Is there a circuit diagram available for building the SIO2PC interface?

Thanks. Until I order the sio2pc and find a cable, I'm using an emulator. I'm assuming APE will only work if I'm using real hardware?

That is for using APE software with real Atari computer and PC as the drive/drive images. Alternatively, if you use the Pro system, it allows you to mount atari drives on your PC. So, you should be able to use an emulator with real drives. I have not done this so I do not know if its true.

If you get Steve's SIO2PC interface and the APE/Prosystem software, it would give you both types of connections. Or you can build the SIO2PC interface yourself. I believe the demo version of APE/Prosystem is included with Steve's interface.

  18. Yes, I have the September 1986 ANALOG disk, but, oddly, I do not have the printed issue. :( Also I do not have any complete years. So offering to sell issues grouped by year is making less sense, I'm afraid. Not sure what I'm going to do with them now.

Do you have the disk for the September 1986 issue of ANALOG Computing? It seems all the archives are missing the second side which has a game called Launch Code. This is probably the only program from the mag that's still MIA...
