  1. Where do you get stuck in the lava level? One of the most difficult aspects to master is the jumps between the narrow ice pillars that appear in the lava... You have to space your jumps out just right (you should use two quick taps) or you'll over-jump and miss. Then you're introduced to the red gargoyle who is a major pain (it's best to just run past him to the next part)... Climbing the rotating tower can be a struggle as well.
  2. Even with some slowdown issues, I think this is my favorite game in the series. Colorful graphics, wonderful orchestral soundtrack, inventive level design... It isn't the most difficult game in the series either. But the last level the second time around (where you have to use the damn bracelet) provides a worthy challenge... I made it all the way to the bosses of level 7 with the bracelet and still lost.
  3. "Solaris" is closer to a NES game in terms of depth (as well as graphics).
  4. Level 5-3... After you defeat the huge robot... You head right and then you have to get up on these platforms somehow with your cable, and it seems impossible. Gamefaqs is no help. HOW THE HELL DO YOU DO THIS? I'm so close to beating the game and now I'm stuck. EDIT Never mind, I figured it out. Ignore thread.
  5. Doesn't matter. "Atari" is a meaningless name now... only used to illicit a positive nostalgic response in consumers. Slapping the "Atari" logo on some first person shooter won't make it a better game.
  6. Like you don't think that you've actually beaten a game until you've obsessively collected all the bonus stuff, etc.? I know that obtaining those chaos emeralds in "Sonic 2" is a real pain in the butt... I'm having trouble even getting the third one. I'm always a few rings short.
  7. I don't remember having that much trouble with the last level in "Axelay". Some games with disproportionately difficult final levels/bosses: "Y's 3: Wanderers from Y's" (Get to the final boss in a day, then good luck fighting this guy...) "Mega Man X" (Never did beat that final boss.) "Shadow Dancer" (I did beat this one... It took perseverance.) "Shinobi III" (This game starts getting real difficult at round 6-1.)
  8. Crap. If I had known I wouldn't have started this thread.
  9. Are there any games that you would put on equal footing with the greats of other artistic genres such as films and literature? I don't know... but I am impressed by the level of loving artistic detail that went into a game such as "Metal Slug".
  10. Good thing "Forgotten Worlds" doesn't have continues. I've been occasionally playing the past few days on normal difficulty and I've already made it to the last level. This is one of those games that seems harder at first than it actually is.
  11. "Fun House" is one of the greatest albums ever.
  12. I beat "A Link To The Past" after having not played it in years. Yay, me! The game was more challenging than I remembered. I had to consult gamefaqs on occasion.
  13. I bought "Forgotten Worlds" for Genesis years ago for $5 from a video store. I never gave it much of a chance until recently. The game is actually a lot of fun once you get used to the unusual controls and make some progress. Rotating your weapon left and right becomes second nature after awhile. Also there's satisfaction in transforming your warrior from a total weakling into a kick-ass fighting machine through purchase of items. The graphics and sound are pure early Genesis and the levels are short, but there's a certain addicting quality.
  14. Right. They both suck. That is, if you're referring to the Atari 2600 "Journey". I don't know that the arcade game sucks.
  15. The nerds rapping about Zelda... This is how Nintendo viewed their customers? Gaming was _not_ cool back then.
  16. Only as part of a balanced breakfast. They really need to put those back on the market. Kids these days... Alpha Bits is inedible now that they make the cereal with whole grain. Like bitter cardboard or something.
  17. Wikipedia: "After the company's brand name was changed to Namco in 1971, it acquired the Japanese division of Atari in 1974, thus bringing Namco into the coin-operated video game market. Namco Enterprises Asia Ltd. was established in Hong Kong and was soon followed by Namco America, Inc., based in California. In 1978, Namco released its first arcade video game Gee Bee which was designed by Toru Iwatani. He also designed two sequels, Bomb Bee and Cutie Q, which were released in 1979. The year 1980, saw the introduction of the company's most famous coin-operated arcade game, Pac-Man, which was also developed by Iwatani. The main character, Pac-Man, has now been made the company's official mascot. When Nintendo began producing its Famicom home console unit, Namco started the development of game titles for it, beginning with Galaxian, which had first been introduced to arcades in 1979. Video games for this console were released in Japan under the moniker Namcot (with the letter t at the end)." So they also used "NAMCOT" for their PC Engine releases.
  18. I wonder how many people believed that "Atari" was a Japanese company.
  19. You should read this book. It's extremely enlightening. It does into some depth on the history of Sega, Nintendo, etc. The Ultimate History Of Video Games
  20. Best Ninja games: The Shinobi trilogy for the Sega Genesis.. "Revenge Of Shinobi", "Shadow Dancer" and "Shinobi III". You'll have a few weeks of fun completing all of these. "Ninja Gaiden" for NES. Good luck ever completing this one. The later stages are near impossible, even with infinite continues. Still an extremely entertaining game. "Ninja Gaiden" for XBOX. An immersive adventure with tight controls and beautiful graphics. A worthy follow up to the NES games. The high degree of difficulty finally made me give up at around the 12th level. Arcade "Shinobi" (MAME)... Not quite as good as "Revenge Of Shinobi" and "Shinobi III" but classic. A lot of people really like "Tenchu" for PSX. I never tried it.
  21. The original NES has an awful design that often results in games not working due to dust, etc. I don't know why they didn't go with a simple top loader design. Unless they didn't think that it was the right time to market something that looked like a traditional video game.
  22. Definitely "Revenge of Shinobi" and "Shinobi III"... two of the greatest action games of all time. Just don't be discouraged by the seemingly insurmountable difficulty in RoS. Once you learn the locations of extra lives and when to use the right magics at the right times, it's not that hard. "Shadow Dancer" is also nice, but not in the same league as the two others. Much too short.
  23. For Capcom and Neo Geo... It's lightning fast, renders beautiful graphics at a high resolution, and I can't find any glitches thus far. The performance makes Mame32 look like a dinosaur. Related: What are your favorite Neo Geo games? I've been playing a lot of Metal Slug, Wind Jammers and Viewpoint. Even beating the first boss in Viewpoint is a worthy challenge.
  24. But the O2 owners got the better version of Pac-Man, right?
