  1. Important info about this game that should probably be included in the rules. Make sure you download ROM revision 1.4. I had downloaded revision 1.2, and jump kicking enemies from a certain distance stun locks them in place so that you can keep looping the game indefinitely, or at least until the ROM crashes with a "CPU Jam" error which is what happened to me after I got over 300k. I was going to post my score but then decided to check if I got a bad ROM. I'm glad I did. Version 1.4 addresses this issue so at least the game isn't broken.
  2. Nice scores everyone! Thanks for participating. This is my favorite NES game, or my second most favorite after Tetris.
  3. Wow, this is much harder than the arcade version. The collision detection is awful. Your kicks and punches seem to connect only at random, but your opponents can sure hit you.
  4. Cool. I don't have much experience with this version, but I was obsessed with the arcade original back in the day. I could get to the final boss, but he's so much harder than everybody else. I still can't beat him.
  5. Nice score! Congrats on hitting the 100k mark.
  6. The game calculates something based on your controller inputs so they're effectively random. Nobody knows how to make them appear or not appear. You can get a maximum of three wands per game, one wand per level, and you can't get a wand in the first and last races. Stage two wand is the most valuable for high score. Stage two wands are pretty common. If you get a wand on the catapult in aerial it soft locks the game and you have to reset.
  7. I finally hit 178k. It would have been 179,550 had I beat the game with 78 seconds left instead of 77. I'm having trouble finishing ultimate with 78 seconds these days. Fortunately the rest of my game was really strong and with a couple wands.
  8. I enjoy Bad Street Brawler and Bayou Billy on the NES.
  9. Yeah, you lose 1000 for every marble lost. But you can only lose up to 20k. Ideally you want to no death the game for highest score.
  10. Emulators are allowed, just can't cheat by using save states.
  11. Nice score improvement! I wonder who's going to beat this first.
  12. I remember a promotion to win a Popeye arcade unit when I got the game for the Atari 2600 back in the day. But I don't remember any details.
  13. NES Karate Champ is almost universally panned. There must be a lot of issues adapting the dual joystick controls of the arcade to a dpad.
  14. NES Defender II is dumbed down by not requiring you to return humanoids to the planet surface. Nor does the planet surface explode. There may be some more minor changes from the arcade. Not sure why they changed that stuff. It's not too bad otherwise.
  15. Good job! Looking forward to you beating the game. Hopefully others will beat it as well. ?
  16. Nope, it definitely doesn't repeat. It's just the six short levels. The game takes under five minutes to beat. I know this makes high scores seem impossible, but it really is all about tearing through the game as quickly as you can while not dying in order to rack up big bonus points. BTW, hold the A button to go faster. You have to hold A to make the jump at the beginning of level 6.
  17. This is a really short game with only 6 races so I hope you can beat it. Expect a score in the 60k range upon beating it for the first time, but that should be good enough for a high ranking on the leaderboard. EDIT: I hope at least one other person beats this, lol.
  18. There was the "Alien Doom" mod in the mid 90s but that was user created.
  19. Congrats Tempest! You're much better at the black box games and sports games than I am.
  20. 177,230 Better score. This was a pretty good no-death run. Too bad I finished with 77 seconds left rather than 78.
  21. The bulk of your score comes from big bonuses upon beating the game. For example, you get 1100 points for every second left on the clock at the end. You also lose 1000 points for every death (subtracting from 20k, so you get 20k for not dying).
  22. Here's a tip: You can go off the sides in the practice race to land on the numbers to get a lot of points there.
