  1. My memories say that Amiga was launched in 1985 as ultimate graphic/video editing machine (not gaming, not gamepad) . It was priced about some 3000DM, alone without monitor. Obviously things changed pretty fast in couple years, so Amiga became popular as gaming machine in reduced version - half RAM (512KB, keyboard machine) in 1987 . 'Why is this' -... simple - game sales were more relevant, and it resulted in focus on Amiga versions, especially after 1990- I remember that getting F1 GP (Microprose) in 1991 in Germany, for Atari ST was hard, and costed some 20% more than Amiga version, even if it was nothing worse. Simple marketing.

  4. Where you get this nonsense? Pentium I systems have 64-bit RAM bus. There is + 32bit PCI bus and 16-bit ISA. But what determines speed mostly is RAM bus. For instance we have some 8-bit peripherals in Atari ST (so, in Falcon too) - eg. YM chip. Is that means that machine has 8-bit bus? You should read more about subject before going in discussion about...
  5. That's incorrect and stays only for 386SX machines. 386DX was true 32-bit CPU and required true 32-bit MBO. What you think why it needed 32-bit wide RAM ? And 386DX was actually what killed Atari and Commodore - Amiga. At 40MHz it was able to run textured 3D games pretty fast (Doom, then Quake), and for price less than Falcon or A1200. Pentium is actually 64/32 CPU - external data bus is 64 bit wide - solution against slowest part of system .

  7. I have original. On SS floppy (360K). No protection at all. But there is a manual book.
  8. I don't see switch by my machine. But if Best claims it, then it should be so - maybe they replaced PS units or made some corrections.
  9. Knights of the Sky is very fine game/simulation. I played it a lot in old days. On Falcon it should run faster some 30% than on Mega STE at 16MHz (because of less cycles by newer CPU). I will check it on Falcon - I have some old crack, what will require some corrections for sure...
  10. Yes, some load is good for safety. Although I had correct voltages with ST alone attached - on newer power suplies. Point is that you can buy PC power supply for much less money than 110-220 transformer.
  11. To work with European Atari Mega STE (and other Atari machines) in US you need power transformer 110-220V. Now we have many computer components capable to work with power in range of 100-250 Volts, but old machines can not it. Same stays for external hard drives with case and power supply. Other solution would be to use some PC power supply for (any) Atari. You will have all required voltages + lot of power, enough for external hard drives etc.
  12. Well. All it with hard disks by Ataris is pretty messy. Culprit is Atari itself mostly - they did not enough good regulations and changed many things quickly, just to satisfy momentary needs. No wonder that many people is confused. I checked it: for TT (TOS 3.xx) 512MB is the limit of part. size. If I get it correct you used Atari's partition SW. I think that it is pretty outdated, and works not good with drives of such capacity (couple GB and more). In time when it was made, couple hundert MB was max capacity.
  13. It was told that max size of partitions is 1GB. (with all agreed in that ) With what SW you partitioned? ICD ? I don't have experience with it, but with Hddriver (some newer version) it must see all 4 (or more) partitions. Problem may be autoboot - Hddriver will install it only on partition under 32MB size (first part), according to my expereiences.
  14. Mega STE 4MB, 4.3 & 18GB SCSI, No HD floppy (floppy sucks ), TOS 2.06 SCSI-IDE adapter (Yamaha), but works not with CF, only with 'normal' hard disks.
  15. jflemaire: Here is talk about Mega STE. You are someone with very limited knowledge, and worse, with high opinion about yourself. What has with this thread that you have some megafile? + you talk about it as it is ST(E)'s limit, but we have lot of ACSI-SCSI adapters on market (better said we had) without 1GB limit. (ICD Pro for instance). Fact is that built in adapter in Mega STE has 1GB capacity limit. If you don't believe me use google, visit some other Atari forum. Just don't believe all what you see, 'cause there is lot of BS around (mostly from shallow smartheads). And may look at link what I gave, to see how it can be relatively simple overriden. Then mixing driver, partition table and drive capacity limits. I just did not read correct your nonsense about 8192GB - how can it be so when partition table is max 2048 GB. Not to mention that it is never proven because no so big drive manufactured yet. And there is 32-bit addressing by SCSI drives. No 34-bit addressing, what would give 8 TB. I tested latest Hddriver with 160GB IDE, and it worked not good over 128GB (what is old 28-bit LBA addressing), just to mention. But it can work, and no practical hardware capacity limit on (simple) IDE interfaces. Maybe you are right about 512MB limit on TT. I don't have it, I just wrote according to what I read on some sites. Finally, to repeat: 4.5 GB will not work on Mega STE, with internal adapter. Will be able to use only 1GB. You should not write about things what you did not test...
  16. What the f... you talk here? What SCSI adapter has ST(E) ? Did you ever used mega STE ? There is no 8GB SCSI limit, even no in Hddriver. Limit is 32-bit partition table. Then: there is no 2048GB limit for IDE drives. As said, it is partition table limit. IDE drives (couple years old) may have 128GB limit, and latest have 48-bit addressing, so you may count how many GB is it...
  17. Mega STE will see only 1GB. See this: http://www.ppest.org/atari/astams.php TT will see whole capacity (Limit is likely 2048GB). Partition size limits are 512 for Mega STE and 1GB for TT, with their regular TOS versions. Even if you partition on TT, you may do it so, that MSTE will see first 1GB (for instance first 2 512MB partitions). Or may try mod from link...
  18. I understand that the Falcon has an IDE hard disk, so I just have to grab the hd and connect it to my PC. But even if I have a SCSI card on my computer (which I do), aren't the Mega ST and TT030 hard disks ACSI? Don't I need some adapter to connect them to the SCSI card? Old Atari hard disk kits were attachable directly on ACSI bus, but inside it was some MFM or RLL drive. Later they used SCSI drives with adapters (ACSI-SCSI). Popular ICD, Link and many other manufactured ACSI-SCSI adapters. In Mega STE is built in ACSI-SCSI adapter. Actually, there is no ACSI type hard disk. In case of very old kit, where some MFM, RLL drive is inside it is not possible to attach them to PC (except some old one, with such hard disk controller). But practically all drives above 30MB are IDE or SCSI...
  19. It is irrelevant what type hard disk is. Program works with SCSI (of course you need SCSI card in PC), IDE and USB (Flash) drives. Btw. Falcon has built-in IDE interface and most of them is sold with 60MB internal IDE drive. Yes, old style drive you need. It is cheap - some 7 Euros here... Although, under Linux may happen that you can write many floppy images via USB (Win XP has some stupid limitations and therefore 800K floppies are problematic via system driver).
  20. Img files are usually hard disk images. In Atari World ST and MSA is used. + Pasti, but it is only for emulators. I made Linux version of program for accessing Atari hard disks (AHDI partition format) on PC : http://www.ppest.org/pcsoft.htm But you may write most of ST image files directly on floppies under Linux.   21. I'm 'responsible' for Windows program Floppy Image (FloImg). Since you can not use it, I can recommend you one partial solution - it will work not with all image files, but likely will work with 80-90% of MSA ones. First thing is that you format floppies to 800K, and not 720K. There is a format program for Atari ST which can it: http://www.ppest.org/atari/floimgd.php (about middle of page) I don't know will it be usable on Amiga. Set format of 800KB, not more (80 tracks, 2 sides, 10 sec/trk.). It is perfect reliable on ST. Second thing is to use MSA image format instead ST format. Because MSA may be compressed, and most of such images on WEB is compressed. So, write MSA image to floppy (may fit usually on 720K floppy), then write it on another (but may on same too) floppy with Trackcopy: http://www.ppest.org/atari/imgrun.php (at bottom). With this you have ready to run floppy on ST. Just need to restart machine.
  22. I probably should give different thread title: Why was so expensive ? It is clear that now is so expensive because it is rare. My logic says that it was produced in so low quantity exactly because of too big price. That is my personal experience too - when it arrived in Germany in 1992, with some half year delay, it costed some 2500 DEM (60MB HD and 4MB RAM). It was too much for me, so I dropped my plans. Question is: was it the sinker (cause), or ship already sunk ? Or both ?
  23. Probably most overpriced machine ever. Was overpriced when arrived, especially in Europe. Now is even more overpriced. Downsides: It has only 16-bit CPU memory bus - read: it is slower than could be considering selected CPU. It has no real expansion bus, so complicated to upgrade (which is also expensive). Plus case is just old STE case, so there is not much space. Memory connectors (slots) are non-standard. Only 14MB RAM max supported because of ST based architecture. Only internal IDE... Adding some external IDE connector would be too expensive? There is not much SW written for it. Lot of compability issues with ST SW. Probably best reason to hate it that it was (marked the) end of Atari home computer manufacturing. A sinker I did not mention positive sides - let users do it. And don't take this too seriously.
  24. But you did it! All chips. Was it faster of waiting right answer here? Did it harm your machine? And maybe you will need little more than fixing contact failures...
