  1. This thread makes me think of just one thing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzGM6-uURKA That's right it's RRRRIIIIDDDGGGE RRRAACCCEEEERRR!!!! -Ray
  2. I agree. I don't go for Gorillas in the Mist or anything, but a nicely trimmed cupcake can be very appealing. Ray
  3. I recently discovered Spacemaster X-7 and have been playing it like a mad man. It has a wild almost Tempest like play patter, yet retains its own unique play mechanics. It's colorful, bright, and almost psychadelic. I recomend this to anyone who loves a good twicth game. That having been said, I thought it was worth mentioning a word or two about 20th Century Fox and the VCS. They sure made some terrific games. Considering they could easily has skirted by with some lousy games based on their very popular film and Tv licenses. But, by and large almost all of their games are at least fun to play, even the not so great ones. I mean in this day in age, the very idea of a MASH game would be absurd. You don't exactly see copies of the various CSI games flying off the shelf and they lend themselves far better to computer games than MASH did. Yet, even their MASH game was pretty playable. Alien was Pac-Man, but at least it was a fresh take on Pac-Man, though I wish that Alien had been rendered a bit more accurately. Even the recently discovered Aligator People is a lot of fun to play. Their original titles though, such as Turmoil and Spacemaster X7 were terrific and I would love to have seen what they could do with more oppurtunities to work on original material. I've always wondered why they never made the Star wars games for the VCS, given that they produced the films. -Ray
  4. They can be fun, but i agree with everyone else in that they can also be useful. Some of their tips are legitimate and the narrator does make the games seem pretty interesting, he has a good speaking voice. -Ray
  5. Yes, thank goodness for the bidirectional paddle controllers. You non-purists can keep your paddles that only turn one way! And dual controllers allows for two-player action? Who woulda thought! BTW, the story is on CNET -- not CNN LMAO!!!! -Ray
  6. I fail to see what is so Taboo about making a game like Boulderdash. No one did anything about it the first time it happened. back when Boulderdash was called Mr. Do. -Ray
  7. Interesting that you can put everything in there but the actual unit. -Ray
  8. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Fairy Gnome thing went for the arcade too. Dona Bailey did the design, while Ed Logg did the programming. Thus the Gnomes. (If you look at this image of a Garden Gnome, you can see how the Centipede cannon resembles it.) The Gnome connection was obviously downplayed in the arcade version (notice that the artwork doesn't show one anywhere), but revived for the home version. Don't ask me why, because I have no idea. Ewwww. -Ray
  9. ok, so I'm reading this post and think, hey this guys clever and then read "Demon of the 7th Circle"! Hey he talks to me too! Who posted this??? oh, I did. In 2002. Just had my Deja-something-or-other for the week... Markimus of 2006. So, is the implication here that the Atari Popeye is the Anti-Christ? -Ray
  10. I think it was shown in Theaters at the time. In fact I think I recall seeing it myself in a Movie theater. I know I saw it when it aired. They also spent too much money on it to be just some TV ad. Its sort of big budget like the commerical with all the computer effects they did that featured Yar's Revenge. That commercial isn't too freaky until the end , then its just eerie. The whole thing reminds me of a Trry Giliam movie though. looks like something that could have aired just prior to Time Bandits. -Ray

    Joust

I just picked up a copy of Joust for the first time since I was a kid. Its still GREAT. The sprites are nice and clean and for once they give a solid impression of their arcade counter parts. You can easily tell who and what everything is. The physics are great. Most importantly it plays correctly and VERY accurately to the arcade (sans that whole Egg drop thing). It's also one of those RARE 2600 games that OBLITERATES its Commodore 64 counterpart. The C64 version of oust is TRULY horrific and I recomend you give that one a run and come back to the 2600 version. You'll fall in love with Atari's version, I promise. -Ray
  12. I tend to ignore that comic that came with the game. I don't buy into the idea behind it because of the arcade game. In the arcade version it's clearly some kind of vehicle or cannon you are piloting. I don't think Ed Logg was all about Fairey Gnomes and te like... -Ray
  13. I think Commando looks and plays much better than Ikari Warriors. Commando is about the best translation possible of the Commando game that the 2600 could acoomplish. Yes Ikari warriors looks Ok, but not great and it plays clunky. Frontline looks awful, and moves so slowly I can't even tell what war I'm supposed to be fighting, maybe the Civil War? -Ray
  14. The C64 blew away the NES on a LOT of games. But, the NES was cheaper and easier to use. Computers were still a novelty. If more people had been open to the C64 it would have clobbered the NES. The thing was going against the Genesis by 1990 with many of those games being made for it like Strider, Forgotten Worlds, and Eswat. I still love the C64 and play it (at least emulated every day). -Ray
  15. Absolutely DISCUSTING! But, FUNNY AS HELL! LMAO!!! -Ray
  16. I'll go with Laser Blast as well. But, then I always liked this game. Even as a kid. I don't get why people hate it so much. -Ray
  17. Remember that bizare 7800 commercial featuring that guy from the US national Video Game Team... I always assumed this was some joke Atari made up, but apparently this was not the only place these jokers appeared. Here is an article all about them... http://www.seanbaby.com/nes/video.htm Oh and here is that 7800 ad... -Ray
  18. Holy CRAP, DUDE!!! You found my childhood, Koala Pad and all. A treasure of a find to be sure. You'll enjoy many hours of fun with that stuff, I can assure you. -Ray
  19. http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=92733 I didn't realize this was on your list of stuff from Google. My bad. -Ray
  20. How about if we change the sprites enough so they don't look like the original sprites, change the background color, etc. Nope, no stupid hacks, the real deal or nothing at all. Atariboy and I are working on something right now. Stay tuned. Now this is VERY intriging. -Ray
  21. The Commodore 64 version of Deomon Attack (which I assume is similar to many versions on other 8 bit computers) is not so good. It would be perfect, except that the extra graphic muscle of the C64 was used to created this awful, cluttered and unnecessary space earth and Moon Background for the game. The earth actually gets in the way of the graphics and makes the demons hard to see. Then there is the boss fight which is pretty wank and as was proved on the 2600, totally unnecesary. -Ray
  22. Well frankly it looks like hell and plays not much better. This is , in my opinion, NOT one of those cases where gameplay makes up for graphics. I remember this Atari commercial from the Tramiel era that showcased this as one of the titles yu could get for cheap on the Jr, back in 90 or so. -Ray
  23. I made sure to order A-vcs-tec challenge and based on what everyone has been saying about ladybug I'll order it some point as well. -Ray
  24. Well no, at least Popeye looks like Popeye and not some horrid brown blob of Feces. -Ray Thats what i SAID!!!!! LOL I know, I just wanted to type brown blob of feces. -Ray
