how good is emulation?
OldSchoolRetroGamer replied to Reaperman's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I THINK in this case it is not so much emulation as a PORT, the original games re-written for the PC platform where as true emulation is software runing to imitate original hardware, the original game or program (in the form of a ROM) runs as intended becuase it does not realize it is not running on "real" hardware. That is not to say emualtion is perfect of course but I think on average it tends to be more accurate then a port to a different platform............ -
Atari 800XL on the way YEEEESSSSSS!
OldSchoolRetroGamer replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Sorry I am a little dense when it comes to this stuff.......... Do I need Both of these? Would this be as simple to use as say the Colecovision 128 in 1 USB Multicart? -
Atari 800XL on the way YEEEESSSSSS!

You can always get a new wife. A maxflash cart really is a time saver. No need to load or boot disks -- just flick the switch and play for a few minutes. I play a lot more since building my cart. You may not even have to build your own cart. Steven loaded my first cart for me so I could try things out. I ended up getting a second and the whole sio2pc thing. I posted my cart image here. It never gets old. Oh Hell no! I would not take a chance on a new wife! This one is actually very supportive and understanding of my hobbies and interests, loves Sci Fi and we generally have the same taste in movies, I consider myself VERY LUCKY LOL!!!!! -
I will be receiving what is appareantly a untested ATARI 520ST (NTSC CANADA/US VERSION) Untested but undamaged and without power supply or any other accessories, just the unit itself, no mouse or connectors. Now, I will also soon be receiving my FIST ever ATARI computer an 800XL but that includes everything to get started. As far as the 520ST though, I would like to know: 1. Is the 520ST POWER SUPPLY specific or can I use ANY PSU for the ST line? 2. Are ALL Atari mouse compatible? Or do I require an ST specific one? Do the 8 bit computer like the 800XL even use a mouse? 3. Do I require an add-on floppy drive for the ST? Does it play carts like the XL? Are the ST/XL at all compatible with each other? Lastly, having grown up an Commodore fan these are my absolute first Atari computers so PLEASE any info, suggestions and comments regarding these machines I will be receiving would be greatly appreciated! THANK IN ADVANCE!

Atari 800XL on the way YEEEESSSSSS!

Welcome to Atari OldSchoolRetroGamer! If you're into Retro Gaming, and lets face it with a name like that it's pretty likely, why not take part in the High-Score Contest on this forum Well I'll keep it in mind, problem is finding the time, I swear I have barely enough time to by this stuff, work fulltime (sometimes more) keep the wife happy and make retro gaming computing videos for my Youtube channel, not much time to sit back and actually play/enjoy them LOL! It sucks being an adult.... -
Atari 800XL on the way YEEEESSSSSS!
OldSchoolRetroGamer replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I would recommend an SDrive or SIO2SD. The latter one is being offered on eBay UK from time to time (even neatly built into a 1010 case) or available for EUR 80 by Wolfram Burger of ABBUC. The former one is much cheaper to build, but I have yet to find a source offering it ready-to-use. Thorsten Unfortunately my technical skill is limited, not up to building much. I can open cases and such but I think the installing of my Sega Saturn modchip pretty much puched the boundries of my electical skills. I'd be looking for ready made solutions where possible............... -

Thanks for the info, yes I have a great modern Desktop and laptop (which I have used to load up my Coleovision MultiCart) so I am glad to hear there are such options............ Do these also hold multiple roms and allow loading from a menu? -
Atari 800XL on the way YEEEESSSSSS!
OldSchoolRetroGamer replied to OldSchoolRetroGamer's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Honestly, between lack of time / money / space, I prefer methods to play as many games as possible so I would explore some type of method to load roms for sure, I have the Colecovision 128 in 1 cart and LOVE it, I DO prefer usung the original system or console hardware but as far as the games go I defintely like the devices that allow me to load as many games as as easy as possible! I welcome any suggestions/comments as well as recommendations for accessories and upgrades thank you! -
Woo Hoo! When I joined this community I mentioned I had never owned any ATARI computer having gone the Commodore route, well I just won an Ebay auction and I will hopefully soon be the proud owner of an ATARI 800XL! Just the computer with power adapter, joystick and Dig Dug cart but I can now honestly feel like a true Atari fan, this is my introduction to the wonderful world of Atari I missed experiening back in the day. Looking forward to it!

Missadventure Revised, which label do you prefer?
OldSchoolRetroGamer replied to accousticguitar's topic in Atari 2600
I adnit, I am surprised so many prefer a text label! -
You should base it on Supes Enemy BIZAROO, he doesn't get any love LOL!

I didn't do THAT but I think this relates. Being a stupid kid, I would run a metal Bread knife along the board in the exspansion slot of my Colecovision with the power on and game playing! Some of the more interesting "effects" was in the game Popeye it garbled the graphics/playfield,, somehow though it seemed to have the effect of combining 2 screens! The ship level was combined with the building level with the See-saw with Wimpy on the bottom. In Mr. Do! It mixed up colours and seemed to create invisible enemies (or make my character invisible) needless to say I wont be trying that with either of my current Colecovisions!

Atari 2600 S-Video Mod V2.2C Pre-Order
OldSchoolRetroGamer replied to Longhorn Engineer's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
How about a SEARS Video Arcade II? It's my only 2600 compatible at the moment........... -
I have 2 copies of the record, here is the front and back I scanned.........

Obviously the Atari computer line can have memory expanded to some degree. I know the XEGS is mostly compatible with the 8 bit carts (am I right?) it can also be expanded with Keyboard correct? Well are any of the game incompatibilities due to lack of memory? If so can it be expanded, either officialy or by hacking? Please excuse my ignorance in all things ATARI but I am trying to learn..........

OK, I know the 7800 is backwards compatible with 2600 and the 5200 had a 2600 adaptor also. As well the Intellivision and Colecovision have 2600 adaptors too. What I am wondering, and I figure the answer is NO but I want to confirm, can 7800 OR 5200 carts be played on anything other than the originating systems by any means? THANKS.

Any chance of an Amiga subforum?
OldSchoolRetroGamer replied to FastRobPlus's topic in Commodore Amiga
Did you ever reget that in any way? -
Thanks for the comments, I appreciate the tips and will take them into consideration in future videos. I wish I was free to do this stuff full time, but I really do love it, am passionate about it and yes I DO think it out and try to create something I myself would like to watch. Lord knows there are some horrible videos out there but I think I am getting better with each video.

It wasn't planned as a 2 parter honestly, I like to give background on the hardware. I did not want to finish though with just a rushed quick look at the games and decided at the last minute to do a second part and give each title at least a minute or two of gameplay coverage.............. Will try to work on tomorrow...............

Well, whatever is better I am thankful for their differences and all the great games!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Do NOT even think about giving up due to the nay sayers or repeated critisism. Unfortunately it's a big wide world out there and a certain percentage is made up of ass holes, it is hard to understand sometimes but there are people who have nothing better to do then critisize others, soemtimes it is because they are jealous, sometimes it's an unknown personal agenda, sometimes they just like to rain on somebody's parade and online all this is increased x100 because they have nobody to answer to and can hide behind the keyboard. What you must keep in mind is those people (fair constructive criticism aside) have NOTHING to offer you and should be ignored, DO NOT punish those who are supportive of you and eagerly anticipating and appreciative of your work suffer just because of a few nay sayers who have nothing better to do, otherwise THEY WIN and that would suck...................
