  1. ARGH. I knew there was a reason I shouldn't be let around soldering irons. And the huge 2nd degree burn across my left knuckles proves it. I just tried this whole thing (as seen in post #1) this afternoon, having ordered 40/60 solder, the resistors, and wire from RadioShack.com. I started with a stock 800XL (not my original, one I got in an auction deal). Now I have an 800XL that outputs sound, and nothing else. I have everything connected, I just don't know if something got short-circuited or WTF happened. That'll teach me not to do one at a time. :P

EDIT (to add): Going back through the photos, everything _looks_ ok - I took out C56 and L5, did a wire from the front of L5 to the front of C3, did the other resistors - the only thing I can think of is, do the directions of the resistors matter? It's been too long since I've played with electronics diagrams to try to remember.... Still only get sound though, dang it!

  2. Can the Touch Pad work with the 7800 if a game was programmed for it??

I don't know about the 7800's, mostly because I've never owned one :)

But these keypads work fine on the 8bits. I found code not long ago that would help you confirm keypresses. I intended to use it for a little programming project that I never got around to...

  3. I dunno where this 2 hours nonsense comes from. I had a Lynx 1 back in the day and when it broke I was given a Lynx 2 to replace it and I used to take my machine into school everyday with rechargable batteries in it which generally didn't last as long as normal batteries like Duracell.

I used to get 4 hours on on my Lynx 1 with volume and 5 hours on my Lynx 2 with volume. If I used Duracells I could get 6 hours.

2 hours were the maximum time between charges for NiCd batteries, back in the day. Saved me a lot of money on alkalines!

  4. Could this be likened to the lynx equivalent of kinect for the MS console (unless i am miss-understanding something)...or something likenerd to the way you play games on a ipad (i.e you move the console itself and not touch the controls)

I think the idea would be more along the lines of a Wii controller, in that you can combine the existing buttons and D-pad with motion control.

  5. Yes, it is much harder to get a board solved than on the GBC Shanghai...but that´s part of the challenge IMO

I´m looking forward to the lynx chess game!

If you can find a copy of the Telegames Lynx chess game, it's pretty strongly rated. I've never managed to beat it.

  6. I have been using my Lynx 6 hour 35 minutes since the last charge, and it is still working. I must say that the battery life is not bad at all with these modern NiMh batteries. I have expected like 4-5 hours maximum. (I even saw a review on youtube and the guy was talking about 2 hours working time...)

When I took my Lynx for the year I lived in Germany (1992) I took two sets of NiCd AA batteries with me - I hadn't bought the D cell pack yet. And yep, they lasted about 2 hours per charge.

Wow, then the battery technology have been improved a HUGE.

Yeah I've got the belt clip battery pack from Best now. I really like it!

  7. I am still trying to find out what software my local cable (Marks Cablevision in Green Ohio) company used. It was around 1985, and our school gave us a tour of the cable company. They had several Atari 8-bits in the back. It was not the EPG Jr. software. It used the standard font, and all text was in standard 40*24 (Graphics 0). There was a static header, mid screen had the main information, and the bottom had a smooth scroller. The in between sections were divided using ATASCII block characters, possibly using a redefined font.

Does this sound familiar to anybody? I know John Harris (Frogger guy) wrote display software for the A8s for quite some time, but The Google has not turned up anything useful.

Ski Brule had some kind of 8-bit running their "local information" channel. They accidentally left it on the menus one night so all anyone could read was "Press SELECT for ...(something)" "Press OPTION for (something else)"

I don't remember what the options were now. This would have been 1988 or 1989.
