Still works for me, temporary glitch?
-
I grabbed it, because hey, free game, but it looks pretty goofy. Is it any good? Haven't even downloaded it yet, but it's in my GOG collection if I ever get around to it. There are probably 500 games in my collection spread across all the different game platforms, and I haven't even gotten around to playing all the ones I've paid for yet. I'll probably never live long enough to play it.

Bruce (the guy that made the video) reported on Discord that using the high speed POKE on the CoCo 3 cleared up the Rommel screen glitches, so there was probably just a little too much going on to fit the 60Hz refresh rate.

Rather than starting new threads every time some videos turn up of CoCo games, I thought it would be better to have one thread. To start things off... Rommel

The 8/16 bit mode switching on the 65816 sucks, and you are better off in one or the other. It is pretty nice if you can stick to 16 bit code, and 16 bit code. The new stack relative addressing, larger stack, etc... are nice for compilers. It's a huge improvement for that. The 64/80 column graphics text code I wrote has an optional 65816 screen scroll, but that was the only place that really made sense to use 16 bit instructions. There are two versions of the scroll, one using the memory move instructions, and the other using a partially unrolled loop of 16 bit LDA STA instructions. The memory move instructions are horribly slow at 7 clocks per byte. The Hitachi 6309 equivalents only require 3 clock cycles per byte. The partially unrolled loop takes around 5 clock cycles per byte. They really should have included a hardware multiply instead of the coprocessor opcode. Rockwell had some 6502 based microcontrollers based on the 65C02 with a hardware multiply on the same opcode (2). No, Rockwell's regular 65C02 does not have the hardware multiply, I checked. -

Yeah, I was wondering why the heck anyone would need double precision for a game. -
