  1. Internet finally back! That was a long, long week!

  2. Out of curiosity, why do you find it “much better”? Playing the fixed 7800 version, alongside the c64 version, I don’t personally see much difference. Sound effects are the big differentiator but it looks and plays more or less the same to me
  3. Impossible Mission is definitely one I like but one I suck at. Have played the original C64 classic and think the 7800 port is solid (set aside the infamous bug and assume you've got the fixed version) though has room for improvement. I actually like the colorful look of it more than the grey C64 one. I do think the ending colors are kinda strange and wish they worked in the digitized sound effects (ala Astro Blaster) but it's good. If I remember from the developer's thread on this, he tried to make it a 256K cartridge but that made cheap Atari crusty, so he reworked it to be 128K. Maybe someday the source code will be shared and a 256K version with the sound effects can be added? We all can dream!
  4. Oh my gosh, Mitch ... so sorry to hear this. Hope your recovery is going well! That’s got to be extremely scary. Looks like mksmith has given two 7800 enthusiasts just what’s needed for recovery ... a new version of a favorite game on the platform! Rest up, heal well! Love watching the discussion on how to piece this game together. Put in many hours playing this on the A8.
  5. Thanks Man. Looking like Tuesday for out of hospital and weekend for back to Atari 7800 haha
  6. Certainly will be happy to be discharged from the hospital. They’ve been treating me well, but two weeks is enough to not be sleeping in my own bed :-)

Great to hear this, best of luck to you. Hospitals tend to be depressing.

I'm happy you're finding comfort -- you've had a bad time of it. Hope things get better.

  7. Oops .. missed PacManPlus’s link. I wish I had more technical know how to contribute. It’s fascinating to me to watch developers collaborate on solving specific technical challenges. Love just being a fly on the wall and learning. This version looks great MKSMITH!
  8. I think it was John Harvey. Also did some others like a Zelda type demo, and an adventure game called get lost, I think. Edit: for historical purposes, heres the thread: . http://atariage.com/forums/topic/154267-something-else-im-working-on/ When I get out of the hospital and back to my 7800, cant wait to try this new Arkanoid build. Looks terrific!
  9. This is a buy for me as well. Loves me some Arkanoid. But take your time and enjoy your craftsmanship !
  10. I'd love a conversion of that. And I don't see why it wouldn't be feasible either or couldn't be noticeably improved. It's on just about every lower platform already. It doesn't scroll. It doesn't have many enemies. The graphics and sound aren't sophisticated.
  11. I think the NES one does. My friend and I spent another summer day playing through that one and I’m almost positive it does. But it’s been thirty years
  12. The SMS version does look great. Another port that looks surprisingly good is the Tandy Co Co 3 version. That said, there’s no reason the 7800 version itself couldn’t have looked significantly better. Rampage just isn’t that complicated of a game really. As noted above Kevmos3’s version where the existing designs were altered without changing the engine was a big improvement
  13. I echo a lot of the comments here. I like Rampage for a bit, but then I find it just gets repetitive. I once played through all 132 levels over the course of an afternoon as a kid and then discovered it repeated. As a port, it's ok, but honestly - the artwork is pretty terrible IMHO. It really didn't need to be. Hated the muppet baby look and the buildings were ugly and needlessly simple. Did like the title screen and I did like the vehicles.
  14. I hear what you're saying, though the Jaguar is probably a bit of an extreme comparison. The Wii U didn't sell all that well, but was mainstream and sold well over 13 million units. The Jaguar was a novelty item where only a few hundred thousand were ever even built. Nintendo sold over a hundred million Wii U discs too.
  15. Hmm ... didn't work for me on Cuttle Cart 2 using real hardware
  16. The abobos from Double Dragon in a wrestling game. :-) I thought it looked good too. Just no substance.
  17. I could look at digitized screens on 8bit consoles all day long. No idea why, but I've always been fascinated by it.
  18. My wife really spoiled me this weekend. After the "not so good" medical news, she booked an impromptu trip to New York to see Billy Joel at his birthday at MSG. Had a great "long weekend" getting away as a tourist

Wow, Billy Joel... that's so cool you're going to see/hear him. Kudos to your wife and have fun!

  19. I thought Karateka would have been reasonable even in 1987. It was on the NES too and had variety ... different showdowns, animated sequences and challenges. The problem with that one was it just just a really, really, really shitty port
  20. Funny how that works, eh? :-) I had friends come over and thought they'd be all over some games- and they weren't. But then they spent hours on others. Two that came to mind were Xenophobe on the 7800 and Blue Lightning on the Atari Jaguar!
  21. Another example was the original Legend of Zelda. Again, the game really just kind of moves from screen to screen, there aren't a lot of colors being used and the 7800 would probably do a better job rendering the sprites without flickering than the NES. Someone once did a demo of the map on 7800 but I think Nintendo's lawyers killed that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWLHwAH-9GE
  22. A few years ago, when we had one of our endless "7800 vs" discussions, one of the contributors commented that a great port for the 7800 would actually be the Sega game, Space Harrier. In this case, the game has a "first person" perspective where it's a lot of sprites moving around on a relatively simple background with some display tricks to give it that first person look. MARIA wouldn't render/scroll a detailed tile display for the background and instead focus on chucking around a lot of sprites simultaneously. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usiaujwjv4M
