And if Thunderbird and Oppressor are that concerned about people potentially pirating BattleSphere, we'll go as far as including specific protections for this game in the hardware. Why do I get the feeling that this is what all the carrying on is really all about.

I think thats what ANY Battlesphere owner fears... that the less fortunate would ever get to play the game that they consider themselves exclusive for owning. As for Thunderbird and the rest of the 4Play people, what would it matter? All their proceeds went to charity, they have nothing to lose if "piracy" of that game ever became the case.-

So, is this CF Cart going to be a general mass-market edition of..say 50 copies or are you going for a limited edition print-run of 30 copies?
You must know one thing, there will be a first edition of 20 JagCF for developpers and we are not sure that will be enough

GT

I think you should limit it to 1 per customer, it's alittle infuriating when one collector decides to buy 4 or 5 copies of a release just cause he can then gloat about it. I'm glad your not gonna limit it because I was rather agitated when Battleshere sold out like that then sprung up on Ebay, having to play hundreds of dollars for a single game or peripheral device isn't fair for people who just want to play them, keep up the great work man. Any idea how many will be ready for release to the rest of the community? and for that matter.. how do us Jag fans in the USA get a hold of one they are released?
as for everybody argueing about the legitimacy of the JagCF, grow up. It doesn't matter what happens, people are gonna always use things for "good" or for "evil" theirs no way to really regulate it. To deny an easier and cheaper way to produce new and exciting games for the jag just because it could be used for piracy is rather ignorant. Besides... rom dumps arn't always reliable, get garbled or corrupted during dumping, the newer Jag games havn't been dumped (as far as I know) so you don't have to worry about some poor person getting a hold of a rom of your $500+ Battlesphere cart...

EmOne, are you a programmer?
Yeah but no where near as competant with Assembly right now :/ I like to tinker with things and I've worked with the PC doom source before and the fact the JAGDoom source is C was really appealing, if theirs no way to open the jagdoom wad file or format another one to same specs then theirs no point in trying since the engine is based around the wad for all the art, map, and other lumps.
-
is it posible to burn a jag cd with video on it, like the jag adds cd ?
like you could rip a dvd and convert it to a jaguar cd format. then burn it.
I don't know why you'd wanna do that, compressing a DVD image to mpeg2 would greatly decrease it's quality, it'd probly be of VCD quality or slightly better. Depends on your orginal file and compression software.
-
I don't have the means to get the file out of the Doom cart, does anybody happen to have it? I'm kinda curious to how it's laid out. Heretic is built from the Doom engine and it might be easily ported to Jaguar with the JagDoom source
but... I need the wad first -
First thing you're going to need is the Starcat development CD, without it you will not be able to code the custom chips (blitter,GPU ,etc) Assembly language is important, it looks very daunting, but after you've started to learn it you'll find the opposite is true. You can however, code in C. I have a GPU/DSP official C compiler, but I need the official Atari (main) Compiler. Linking to files from your C main code looks a little tough but I havent got that far yet.
You will need a custom build cable to download code from the PC to the JAGUAR (which many electronic stores can make for you) and a BJL or similar(behind Jaggy Lines) which incidentally is built into the SE version of protector so you wont need to modify your Jag. Hope this helps
Invest your time and relax and enjoy it is my advice.
I havn't been able to acquire one of Starcats Dev CD's, where can I get one?

I really have to wonder what Carl is upto in regards to the Mystery Projects since his news section hasn't been updated since September of 2005 :/
Welcome to real life.

We have been working on a Lynx multicart (as discussed in the Lynx forum), and really these days it's hard enough for me to have one project to work on, let alone two. So, yes, my Jaguar projects have been put on hold for a number of months.
However, I do still hope to work on one of the mystery projects over the winter, and perhaps the second one sometime in 2007.
I don't question you carl lol, I'm just glad your doing something with the Atari Jaguar and the fact your doing so in your free time is great, just anxious for a new game is all.

The guy's "business" tactics alienated the company from the rest of the market and his son Sam was a moron. Even Kassar was a better businessman then Jack and he was just as thickheaded..
Now this one I'm not sure about. Kassar was an Asshole (admittedly I have heard Tramiel was too), but Kassar made some good choices and arguably these do outweigh his bad choices to a great degree. I mean you can virtually define Kassar's tenure with Atari in 2 deals. The Space Invaders deal and the ET deal. Everything else reflects one or the other. I'd say he has more Space Invaders than he does ETs.
Kassar (and this is coming from someone who HATES Ray Kassar) knew his products and he knew what people liked to buy. Tramiel could have given a rat's ass what Atari did best , Software, in favor of making a cheap computer or line of cheap computers that he could use to kill Commodore.
So, I'm of the mind that he did kill Atari. First he did so by inventing the Affordable Home Computer, and then he made the C64 even more affordable and got computers into the hands of kids, and finally he drove the last stake through the Atari company that WE knew in 1984 when he bought and then re-directed the company into a computer business.
-Ray
It was because of Kassar that many of the great Engineers and Programmers such as Al Alcorn were "sent to the beach" (I still love that line lol) and Cosmos could have been released if he hadn't been in his "protective bubble" with his concrete stance on the continued sale of the VCS, now.. we might not have had so many great titles for the VCS since Nolan wanted to pull the plug on the VCS and start development on a new console but then again, I still wonder what the future of Atari would have been if Time Warner hadn't ousted Nolan from Atari. And I totally agree with you on Tramiel, turning Atari's attention to affordable computers did somewhat killed their image as a video game company.

That helps alot thanks, do you think it'd be difficult to create a device like this for the Atari Jaguar? The general idea is that you have something that goes between the cartridge and console, which checks for a few specific addresses, then replaces the data with the hack if the address matches. Basically you have a CAM (content-addressable memory) that holds the cartridge addresses, plus another matching memory with the replacement data.
If it was done with an FPGA, you would probably have a bunch of N-bit registers for the address, which would be compared for equality using a bunch of XOR terms fed into a big AND term for each "line" of code that you want to support. Then you would have a menu program which knows how to 1) load the codes into the CAM, 2) disable access to the CAM (to avoid accidental access in the game itself), and 3) switch over to the cartridge ROM.
With more advanced CPUs such as the ARM in the GBA/DS, it might be possible to write a fully software version by using the MMU to remap the ROM to a changed RAM page. There are also issues that may make things more complicated, such as I think the N64 uses compression in the cartridge, decompressing code and data into RAM as needed.
CD/DVD-based code systems would work by intercepting the disc read routines and changing specific sectors after they are read.

Perhaps I should be more specific... I'm looking for how I can build an cheat device for a system it hasn't been done for before (at least commercially to my knowledge) What I want to know is how the electronics inside such a device would be laid out especially input and output. Schematics of a SNES Gamegenie or a N64 Gameshark would help some if anybody knows where I can find any.
-
Hey, was wondering if anybody here has any knowledge on or anywhere I might find how a cheat device such as Game Genie or Action Replay (Cartridge based) work? I can't find schematics or basic info on how the hardware works (besides software). Thanks.
-
Just one question about this device, Will the compact flash cartridge be able to load game roms of already released games? AvP, Tempest 2000, Ect, you get the idea.
I think the idea was to release a product for homedev and for future commercial releases. I remember earlier in this board GT Turbo said that the cards would be encrypted to prevent piracy so I think that the intention is to not allow commercial roms to be loaded through the device. So in my opinion I think the answer is no.

That the Jaguar has a horrible controller. It's actually one of the more comfortable ones I've used. Probably one of the few where I can play for hours and not start to get cramps.
People were just intimidated by the awesome keypad
Retro for life man -
Hey everybody, does anybody know if their gonna hold a Phillyclassic this 2007? Their website has nothing on it (except a background image) and their email address doesn't work. I hope it hasn't been canned :/ it's the only Eastern US classic con I know about.

according to somebody at my school there was a a version of halo made for the dreamcast (homebrew) with online capabilities. Is this true? if it is where can I get it?
-Ty
I believe your referring to Halo 2D, theres stuff about it here: Halo 2D Thread

Was wondering if anybody has tried it, I've heard from some friends that it can't find and install the plug-in itself.. so heres the link for the Plug-in Vitalize 3

The best Hand Held ever is the Neo Geo Pocket Color, only handheld up until the PSP that could do a portable fighting game justice.
If your on a very tight budget (20-30 for System and 13 games) and really into the retro scene check out the Timetop Gameking lol.. it's a like a middle tier between an LCD game and the original Gameboy and this one guy shows you how to build a dev cart hah hah, to fit the bill of this topic it's the best of HK Greymarket gaming handhelds lol.. probly the only "legitimate" piece of gaming hardware to come from China.

I'm a stranger to the homebrew market (I don't have a Jag CD), so forgive the ignorance of my questions.
1) Is the JagCF something that the people at Scatalogic can make use of to distribute Battlesphere (assuming that they still exist and that they are genuinely interested in distributing BS to all Jag owners, not just ones with $400-500 to shell out on eBay).
2) I'm a Mac user; will this pose difficulties for me downloading a game and putting it on the JagCF?
As a non-Jag CD owner, I'm a prime candidate to buy this. I'd love to participate in the homebrew scene, I just don't want to buy the CD unit, as it's expensive and only has two excellent, commercial games (Battlemorph and IS2).
In my opinion I think Scatalogic and 4Play released Battlesphere just to say "There.. we finished the game like we promised" and that they did a few runs and wern't gonna release anymore. Now I hope they do take advantage of the JAGCF technology because I really wanna play that game without dishing out outrageous amounts of cash for one game.
-
I honestly can't wait for this peripheral, but am hoping that when it's released I don't get left in the dust from all the other die hard fans buying up all the supplies *cough*Battlesphereandscatbox*cough*. Any idea of how many of these will be produced?
The JagCF will not be number limited, we think everybody who want one, can get one, we don't want some people sell at an extra price JagCF because there will be only a small quantity. We don't want that, we do that only for pleasure
Just for fun !!December, JagCF will be available, the developpers version will be available before, with that when the JagCF will be available for everybody, some games will be finished. Games like Project Apocalypse ( http://www.jagware.org/index.php?showtopic=306 )
and some others games better than Project Apocalypse

and never forget one thing, there is an special option nobody know inside the JagCF

GT Turbo (Jagware)
Well then, thats great news. But a few questions about the use of this device for the release of new games. Would this mean all new commercially released Jag games would come on CF cards? or is the point of the device so that any game can be loaded onto a standard CF and played through the CF Cart? It'd be interesting to see how the cart labels would be reformatted to fit on CF Cards.
-
I remember seeing Telegames Cricket somewhere, with screenshots even. It looked like conciderable work was done on it. Does anybody know if there was ever a prototype? or how far along it was? If it was ever close to finished it'd probly be the closed thing to Jag Baseball :/ So many games announced and never delivered, when all these protoypes started popping up on B&C it gives me hope that many of these games may finally see the light of day. Especially when Carl of Songbird gets his hands on any.
-
It would only be a mistake to read that as legal jargon. B&C Makes illegal copies of games. The original is worth more.
Most of the protos they released were found in dumpsters or in the inventory of warehouses gathering dust that they had purchased. I doubt any of the companies that abandoned those games would question it or even care.
-
I don't know why anybody would have wanted this game, it looked horrible which saddens me when it worth so much for it's "Rareness" I think it's funny that B&C has released new copies of it, kinda a slap in the face for scalpers on ebay
but then again I bet their are people on EBAY selling the B&C copy as the original.

For or for not, using cartridges games on JagCF ?

Neither do any of the 4Play and Scatalogic people, only the greedy SOB's on ebay who probly bought multiple copies of the game when it was available.
