I believe someone was selling Atari 5200 joystick extensions in the marketplace recently, those should work well too.
Steve
EXCELLENT tip! Received and tried the 5200 extension cable today, and it not only works perfectly, BUT fits as if it were made for the XEGS. Because of my lack of space here, I was unable to play any text adventure based titles (due to the fact of where the computer is located) and having the keyboard on my lap rocks. Text adventures here I come!

Load"*",8,1
Why the last ",1"? My eighth grade computer class's (yup, we had computer class..a room of about 40 C64's) instructor always taught us to load this way. In fact, the ,1 is not needed at all. Or is it? A vintage mystery! Or at least to me....

Digital Press's online rarity guide is a pretty good resource as well, as is the DP Collector's Guide 7. Nice thing about the guide is the littel tidbits and easter eggs included. Only thing is that repros of unreleased titles (B&C..etc) are omitted because they aren't considered official releases.

Nice!! THREE Flip & Flop boxes? Hot damn! Wonder if there are any more in existence! And Crystal Castles, boxed Spy Hunter, Pool 400....you are making me jealous!

Also, tjlazer, that Activision collection is super sweet. Looks as if your carts are not exhibiting much (if any) of the "Actiplaque" syndrome.
Yup, my collection is growing daily, much to the disliking of my wife. We actually had a pretty bad argrument last night due to my spending habits....when I bought this I tried to explain to her why this was a GOOD thing:

Haha! Anyway, I think I will be slowing down now. I'll give myself a $100 a month limit, which should be more than enough to continue on my collection at a more than moderate pace. My goal of course is to complete the DP Guide's retail release list, and I certainly am on to a good start.

Yeah, I am waiting for this as well. At least a 64k XL/XE can be modified to add 800 compatibility....but I would still *love* to have my 800 used as my "main" machine.
-
Excellent work! Just tested it in A800Win, will test the game on a real machine when I get home!

Cart slut.
Keep going and you could be a full blown cart whore.
(Can I say that here?)
Haha! Don't tell anybody!

In a twist of topic, what is the BEST deal you ever got on a rare 8-bit cartridge?
-
Which ones are you missing for Activision?
Quite a few:
Beamrider
Pitfall II
Space Shuttle
Decathlon
Zone Ranger
River Raid
Pastfinder
Keystone Kapers
H.E.R.O.
Zenji
So yeah, actually almost all of them...ugh
-
Yeah I got quite a few too, I have to count them to see. I remember when I managed to get all the Activision carts, which I was quite proud of. lol
Yep, still working on the Activision titles here
The only company in which I have almost every cart (missing one) is TG. -
After spending my day off playing games and alphabetizing my collection, I realized that Flip & Flop brought me up to 100 collected carts thus far! Awesome! The last time I had a library sized collection like this was with the SMS and the Vic-20...both of which I sadly sold off to cover debts years ago. It's really nice to have a solid collection, and especially nice that most of the games are actually fun! I'll have to get some pictures up eventually. They are all individually polypropelene wrapped now (Bags Unlimited) and all of the manuals I currently have are in Silver Age comic bag/board. Perhaps overboard, but heck, they amazingly lasted this long and I want to do everything I can to preserve them.
We already have a thread of people posting their computer setups, but how about pics of your game collection? I see a few faces that have purchased tons of carts over the years on the likes of ebay, so I can bet some folks here have some pretty darn sizable collections. Show your stuff!

Good tips! Off to hunt!

Is it as easy as grabbing a straight through DB15 extension cable? I'ed love to add some length to the cable!
-
Can you scan it flat? thanks. Great game btw! Where did you buy it zektor800? I burned it to ROM to play it on my Atari 800XL.
I actually sniped it in an ebay auction with a few other titles for the amazing price of $18!

I do not repro carts...it's the original or nothing for me (with the exception of those prototype repros from B&C) But, with some determination, you CAN get the collection you want. I only started when I posted that "first impressions" thread, and am already at well over 100 carts (some with boxes and manuals) and a few R8-9 titles such as BB Strikes Back, Flip & Flop and Carnival Massacre. I love collecting this computer...so MANY greats!

Funny this game should be mentioned, as I jut purchased it a few days ago!

I just did it to my 1200xl. I put a wire from R44(does not matter which side) to Pin 5 of the monitor port. Using Q7 was too bright. The 1200xl really needs those mods. The screen is still fuzzy to me. Chroma for the 800xl I had was a lot clearer.
Thanks. I'll try that over the weekend, see if it helps.
I've got the 1200XL, an 800, and an XEGS. In composite, the 800 has the best picture (the XEGS is also really nice). Of the three, only the 800 supports S-video, and it's stunningly beautiful to me. The 1200XL looks like it's using RF when it's using composite, and it looks like total crap when it really is using RF.
I remember another trick I used to do a long time ago with an 800XL. I made a composite video cable that had the luma also connected to the composite, which (if I remember right) gave a much nicer composite picture. I'll try that with the 1200XL, too...
Probably I'll end up doing the real supervideo or clearpic mod, but at my level of soldering skill (not so high), it's an all-day project with a definite chance of failure.
Funny you shoudl bring these points up, as I just started a thread on the XEGS and 800 video out. Yes, the 800 is incredible...and the XEGS is really nice as well. My soldering skills are sub-par as well...which is why I have yet to attempt the chroma mod on the 800XL. I can do it, but the fear of failure prevents me. I have everything hooked up and running like a champ right now, would not want to destroy that. Ehh...maybe one day when I become more confident.
-
Ahh, I guess it took Atari a few tries at tweaking

Anyway, even still, the BEST video output I have ever seen on any vintage system has to be the good ol' 800 with this S-Vid cable. It is so clear...almost too clear! I had to seriously tone down brightness and contrast levels to prevent my eyes from bleeding! Haha!
-
Hooked up one of my newly acquired XEGS systems tonight. I am surprised at how good the composite video out is! I have not had the system for well over 10 years, and didn't remember it being this clear. It is *almost* as good as my 800's chroma signal....not quite of course but very close. Wonder why this is? Better components?

Actually, I would not mind one bit paying an extra $20-25 for a solder free solution honestly. But if solder it is, that is what it is. I will definitely be grabbing these when you finish. This is indeed exciting news, and I for one certainly appreciate your dedicated work! REALLY looking forward to getting this into an 800!
Being deftly experienced soldering, I can tell you with confidence that the 16 solder points won't effect your 800's stock/mint/original status at all if you remove them. It's a completely reversable process with no residual effects, especially if he's using unused solderpads on the 800 motherboard. All you need is some good desoldering braid to completely remove any solder back to the clean solder pad, and no one could ever tell it was done. i can tell you this with confidence without even seeing his upgrade or where the solder points are at. But, if you are not skilled with a soldering iron or at desoldering, you can make mistakes and damage something, at least cosmetically. you do need to have a steady hand and know the proper, professional technique for soldering and desoldering, which instructions for are widely available on the net. Many people may say that a desoldering iron is best, but I disagree, I get far better and cleaner results with desoldering braid of high quality (like RadioShack sells), if you use it properly. And cheap solder-suckers do suck, but not the solder they are supposed to suck; the tips are too large to get in close enough.
The more I think about how great this board is going to be, the less I am worrying about modding my 800
I have decided that I am certianly going to do it. This is a pretty exciting time for the ol' 800. This is certainly going to be fantastic

That is a completely ass-kickin' mod my friend! Yah don;t see too many cosmetic mods done on the XEGS. AWESOME work!

Yeah, I thought the top portion looked like it was ripped off in that photo, my top portion is unstuck. I'll have to glue it down sometime but I hope whatever glue I use doesn't come though the label. It feels brittle as well.
I have been going through a lot of my 2600 carts. The edge labels always seem to come off. I use the thin width Scotch double-sided tape to put them back on. It works really good and should keep them from ever coming off again. You might give it a try.
I also use a max strength glue stick, and previously (on Vic-20 carts) I used the brush on Krazy Glue very glently and carefully. Both of these methods work great...but just take care not to get any on the outside (visible) area of the label.

Not sure. If it was, it certainly is not in my collection of 20,000 ATR and cassette images!
