  1. Actually, I would not mind one bit paying an extra $20-25 for a solder free solution honestly. But if solder it is, that is what it is. I will definitely be grabbing these when you finish. This is indeed exciting news, and I for one certainly appreciate your dedicated work! REALLY looking forward to getting this into an 800!

  2. Taking the Atariage advice with Bagsunlimited.com, I ordered a pack of 100 collector bags. But instead of the advised 5-1/4 x 8 (for the A2600 carts), I went with the smaller 4-7/8 x 8 size. Fits A800 carts pretty nicely! Figured I'd pass this info off to the other cart collectors here looking to preserve your investment :)

  3. But, one issue is the soldering. I have an extremely mint A800, and would really like to keep this sucker original (not that it is ruining *much* originality as there is no cutting involved...but still). I suppose if this is the only route I can get another A800 for the mod, but any chance of a solder free solution some day?

Then you would probably want his original design. That one only need 1 jumper to the connector and you still use all 3 ram cards.

I think warerat may want to use the 3 slots for something. I know he had a slot 3 MyIDE card.

See, that sounds pretty cool. Warerat, is it possible to get this design as well?

  4. Awesome news! Really looking forward to this.

  5. Please post more labels in this thread! I was having a conversation with a few people in another thread regarding the whole "Popeye" Actiplaque situation, and am really looking for a Popeye label at the moment. Normally I would not destroy any original label, but my cart has the label completely ripped off on top anyway, so what the heck.

  6. Oh man, pics...haha...

Here's me at a bar about a year or so ago singing. I always sound very good after a few dozen beers! :)

BTW: After looking at this photo longer, I don't think that I look 31...but I am :) Well, 30 in this pic...

  7. There have been reports of this happening to these carts as early back as 1992. Unfortunately, no known way to prevent it :( I agree with keeping it original however....unless your cart is like mine with a completely ripped off top portion :(

  8. zektor800, your 800XL looks like it's near enough new.

What are those lemon and lime cartridges? Plus, I see your Popeye cart has suffered the same fate as mine.

I'm still gonna put some pics up, I just haven't got around to it yet.

It's funny with Popeye. I look on ebay, and most others are the same way. I thought it was some kind of mold at first, but it looks like this is just a poor side effect of aging glue. You don't see this behavior on other PB carts (Frogger, Star Wars), so it is kind of odd. Maybe I'll see if somebody has a replacement label in my label thread.

  9. NICE! What size is that TV, it has to be at least a 27", right? Looks like your Atari's natural habitat is use as gaming consoles.

I believe it is a 32"....can't remember :) Yes, gaming as life! I do use SIO2PC and APE as well (there's a little shot of Steve Tucker's adapter on that mat next to my 800XL), so there's a whole lot of gaming going on in the living room at all times. After I took the shot another 15 or so Atari XE carts came via UPS, so the collection is growing daily :)

  10. Getting back to what the A8 has, C64 does not, and vice versa:

Not being aware of products for other machines doesn't mean they don't exist.

    1541-III

That should also work on a 128, plus/4 or other CBM machines. You'll notice it even fits inside the C64 DTV Joystick unit.

    There's also a C64 IDE interface.

    As for other machines...

There are several IDE interface boards for the Apple II. One program lets you boot your Apple II through a super serial card and load a driver that emulates disk drives over the serial connection to the PC.

If you look around you'll also find IDE interfaces for the Spectrum, TRS-80, Coco, MSX, etc...

And btw, they have all had them for years. I think one TRS-80 version has been around for at least a decade.

    From the 1541 III website:

"Due to small batch sizes and reservations the ordering of 1541-III is stopped"

    Awesome.

It is nice to see projects going on, and the 1541 III project sounds kick ass. But, what about the person (namely me) who is not going to sit here and build a device from scratch? User friendly is the key. I just want to buy it, plug it in, select a D64 image, load "*, and off I go. It looks like the 1541 III performs this task (and without a PC...awesome), but, no ordering. Bah..

  11. Getting back to what the A8 has, C64 does not, and vice versa:

There is only one thing that the Commodore 64 *needs* in today's age, and that is an up to date way of running images. I was very eager to get my C64 to the point my A8 is right now. I am using APE in conjunction with SIO2PC, and it IS the future of this computer. Dying disks...dead disks. That is what we can most definitely expect in years to come (if not right now). SIO2PC is excellent. I can run any of the thousands of dumped disk images any time I want, as well as disks I dumped myself using the device. They are now preserved potentially forever, and I'll never get a read error :)

The C64 does have equipment to do it, as well as software. BUT, the software is very very dated. I spoke with the author of 64HDD regarding his software, and he says that a Win32 port is years (if ever) off. Only a DOS version exists, and he can not be certain it will run correctly on my machine. The software and hardware also required an LPT port, which means I would have to hunt down a PCI Parallel port interface as well...as my new PC has no LPT.

If somebody ever creates a simple Win32 interface to mount C64 disk images and run them on a real C64 (just like APE does), I will be all over it.

And, as stated earlier, how about a MyIDE cart for the C64?

How about SOME kind of up to date hardware/software progress for the C64? Again, I am not ragging on the C64. Rather the opposite. I *WANT* these things to happen!

For right now, the A8 has one up on all of the other vintage computers because of the constant work and progress by people like Steve over at Atarimax, and the many other dedicated members of these forums. C64 desperately needs something like this. And while I am at it, the Apple II as well!

  12. I actually have an 800XL and a classic 800 both hooked up at all times in the living room. I'll get some pics together tomorrow. It'll be neat to see other's setups (hooked up and functional) as well!

PS: I forgot to add. If you REALLY want to hook up your system, there is ALWAYS room. I live in a mobile home for God sakes, and I still have all of my systems hooked up!

  13. And M*A*S*H :)

As for the Jr and Super Pacman carts, I ended up using the labels posted earlier, but on classic cart cases. I do not have any common grey carts to destroy, so this was the only option. I figured anything was better than the old labels B&C made, and they actually look pretty cool on the classic carts. One of a kind for sure :) Thanks again for the labels and advice!

  14. I have been practicing some more tonight with this, and I can make the result even better. I am using this matte/semi gloss post-it photo paper I spoke of earlier. Picture do not do it justice...looks WAY better in person. I am using the wife's inkjet printer at max DPI, so it takes some time to dry. Afterward, I am using a Krylon clear acrylic spray. I am going to do a few coats on these, but it'll have to wait until a warmer day (hopefully tomorrow) as I need to apply a coat, wait some, do it again, and so on. In my previous tests, these labels are coming out REALLY good. I already created a M*A*S*H label, and should hopefully get them all in place this coming week. Neat little project.

  15. Thanks for the labels! I printed today on semi-glossy/matte post-it note photo paper and the result is jaw-dropping. I just have to laminate and I will post before and after shots when done. You don;t happen to have high quality shots of MASH and The Last Starfighter now, do you? :)

  16. Thanks for the warning I have one of the bad PS (the ingot) and it is the nicest one I have. So use that with a 800XL only?

I think the idea is not to EVER use the ingot PS unit. The bricks (white and black) and the "box" are the ones I use on my 800XL's.

  17. What you could do is find some common gray cased carts and gut out the board and use the case with my labels! (Bug Hunt, Flight Sim, etc)

Yep, this is exactly what I am going to do. What did you print them on? I was looking at inkjet sticker paper on a few websites.

  18. I think the A8 and C64 should go hand in hand in anyone's retro computer collection for sure. They are both fantastic computers, and both have things that the other does not. I am actually looking into 64HDD right now, as I am having so much fun with SIO2PC. I'll have them both hooked up and drive my wife absolutely 8-bit insane!
