  1. Naah. I work at a Wal-Mart. We lose dozens of CDs, DVDs, and video games a day precisely through the mechanism ewing92 states. (And even more by people who are more blatant, simply opening games in the electronics department.) Just because there are cameras doesn't mean many people are caught, and the rules are so restrictive that even someone who's seen you pocket something is probably not going to be able to do more than try to make you feel nervous.

We do put some games out in the open in my store, by the way. We have dump bins of $30 games, and 8 feet of $20 games out in the open. The cases are primarily for the more expensive games, with any leftover space going towards whatever stock is onhand...

When I was an Assistant Manager at Wal-Mart, we stopped a shoplifter that had concealed 40 CD's under his clothing(everywhere!)

We made sure to wear plastic gloves before handling the evidence!

    :)

  2. 4-switch woodgrain, 10 games(all commons), 2 joysticks, and 1 set of paddles, kept inside a smoke-colored hard plastic case. Very nice looking, until I saw the price stuck to it.....$125.00!! I asked if this was correct, and they said "yes".

Someone bought it! (That's they said, anyway.) Maybe I need to sell my duplicates in this town. :)

  3. I had a premonition to stop at a local thrift, and was surprised to find an Atari 2600, 4-switch woody, in excellent condition. It had 10 games, 2 joysticks, and 1 pair of paddles, kept inside a smoke-colored hard plastic case. Very nice looking, until I saw the price stuck to it.....$125.00!!

I asked the nice lady working there if this was the correct price, to which she simply replied "yes". I thanked her, bit my lip, and walked out the door, holding in my laughter. $125 for a VCS, 10 games, and 3 controllers. Hard to believe, but I wondered if some local is actually going to buy it.

  4. Quality all the way.....

I barely touched the original Flashback, nor did I ever see it displayed in a retail store. The games on it didn't impress me, because I had the original games at home, ready to play. Never heard a word about the Flashback locally, but eventually found it on the Internet. Still did not have a desire to purchase the original Flashback.

When news came out for the Flashback 2, I watched carefully, and thought "Could this be true? Classic games, on a newly designed VCS console?" I think the first time I actually saw one was at VGXpo in Dallas, with no one at the display (were they even working?) After searching through the electronics department of several retailers, I was ready to purchase Flashback 2 online, because it simply wasn't available in my area. But, while looking for something in the "Toys" department, lo and behold, there it was, the Atari Flashback 2.

The Flashback 2 may have been a sucess, but how many "average gamers" actually knew it was available? Could it have sold even better? Not with high budget advertising, but getting the "Big Box" retailer to display it better. A quality product (such as the Flashback 2) will sell. Original hardware that has quality design and quality games will result in repeat sales, because the consumer views this product came from a quality company. (If Atari is reading this: Better sales=more profit.)

Consumers that have bought a Flashback 2, are looking for more. And the possible Flashback 2 portable would be a product that will sell well.

  5. Hmmm...

While looking for another item, I noticed a local Wal-Mart had the mini-Atari joystick available for Christmas, and they sold out. (Even though they were not priced! They scanned $14.44 each.)

Does this prove that consumers will buy a product based on the name, possibly remembering the past, or they just need a quick stocking stuffer?

The mini-Atari joystick that I had displayed on my table during OVGE this year has dissapeared. After it broke, I was planning to keep it as a possible collectable, but must have thrown it away! :)

  6. Is that why I haven't found any Pac-Man scratch-offs lately? It was a limited time game? Man, that sucks. I only played it two or three times. I'll try to find a convenience store with some left, and see if I can't snag me one of those cocktail cabinets!

I've found 2 places in North Texas that have plenty left. Every time I buy one (or more :)), I keep thinking "this could be collectable", but I scratch it anyway!

  7. I saw the Atari Keychain games two days before OVGE, and decided to offer one as a prize, so I bought 2 of them. The Joystick that I had on display had several people asking "does it really work?." So, I plugged it in and watched the joystick slowly disintegrate! Several gamers enjoyed it, while others just watched. Fifteen bucks for a very poorly made "Plug N Play", that will be used as a key-chain only.

(Keep an eye out for this item to be reduced.)

  8. OVGE was great this year, being able to meet everyone again, as well as some new faces in the crowd.

My ColecoVision table went over very well, even though I had a last minute set-up. The dual Vectrex's were also a hit, with several offers to buy one! The one thing that I would change is to have some chairs in front of the Vectrex's, as well as the SHUMP tournament. I found the mini-Atari joystick two days before OVGE, and decided to offer one as a prize. The other mini Atari joystick that was supposed to be for "show only" had several people asking "does it really work?." So, I plugged it in and watched the joystick slowly disintegrate! Several gamers enjoyed it, while others just watched. Fifteen bucks for a very poorly made "Plug N Play", that will be used as a key-chain only. (Collectors, look for this item to be reduced soon.)

Saturday evening was fun, even with the thunderstorm! Being able to spend time with everyone is a cherished moment, that any game cannot possibly match. As for the Pac-Man scratch-offs, when I took them to Texas for a payout, the place I stopped at said that this game was out of date, and the big prizes had already been won. He was wrong, as shown at the Texas Lotto site located here:

(36 more cocktail arcades to be given away!)

I also regret buying only 2 items this year, Rob's Commodork book (highly recommended), and an arcade marquee of Donkey Kong Jr. from Jeff.

Thanks to everyone for a great show this year. With everyone pulling together, OVGE will be here for 2007!
