  1. With cart on hands, I took these photos.

I never saw this case model before, maybe Activision ask to Polyvox a different cart, becouse Polyvox produce all carts including Activision in Atari silver label.

Or is a cost reduction, the cart is more simple without board protection...

KK isn't my favorite game, I hate the airplane and for me the elevator is useless, but I think until now, this game do the best graphic use in A2600.

Edit : I need clean the label, please, anyone know a good trick to do this? Just cotton and water?

  2. Yes, they not produce Imagic Games...

Rom, I can't find polyvox Dodg'em... Maybe this cart not exist like snoopy and pigs&space

    Anyway I found this....

This cart not looks like a polyvox one... Did you know if Activision produced silver label carts?

  3. I read somewere that Argentina uses PAL-N tv format (N, not speaking about PAL-M)....

I don't know the difference between PAL-N and PAL.

Pangasinan, this clone run fine in PAL televisions?

Edit : At wikipedia, PAL-N is 625 lines at 50 fps, maybe the colors information is different than normal PAL format.

And is used in Argentina and Uruguai only.

Rom Hunter, games from Argentina can be labeled as PAL-N ;)

  4. Ben, here's possible ways for draw DK.

First at top, the fixed interlaced lines. Doesn't look bad was I think.

Second, in middle, using venetian blinds

    And at bottom, normal sprites.

I can't see difference betwen Venetian and "normal" flicker.

    What you think?

  5. I think Mr. Kitchen's kernel is as good as one could reasonably hope for. Trading 30Hz flicker on the barrels for more barrels would have been a good trade, but maybe he wasn't supposed to have any flicker.

Mr. Kitchen? I search it and found Pressure Cooker, is that?

No problem for 30Hz flicker, as this game uses black background, will looks like the flames at Stay Frosty. 20 Hz is not pratical, so I need a code to keep 3 sprites at same scanline, mario and 2 enemies, something like berzerk, when the object moves, this force others object to go for diferent places.

did you ever get a chance to redo the donkey kong demo using the venetian blinds (interlaced sprites) technique? I think this type of flicker might look better on a real TV.

Another idea might even be to try venetian blinds without the flicker, i.e. just show one frame of the interlaced sprite all of the time - leaves a lot of 'blank space' but elminates flicker...

Ben, I tried, and there's no diference in emulator, I don't know in real hardware. I'll code it again, for you compare.

The Constant Interlaced lines maybe looks ugly, this technique is better for playfields like the JumpMan demo made by CyberGoth.

  6. Well, from my POV, it doesn't matter if your code was less efficient than it could be; it didn't work in Stella but did on a real system, so it's a bug. I don't judge peoples' code, only the results in the emulator

    Ok ;)

People, about DK, here's a new mockup I did some time ago.

DK uses both sprites, it's impossible to display mario at same scanline, this is unique diference from original, the rest can be done exactly you see in this mockup. The plataform will be inclinated.

I not forgot this project, one day I'll start it.

  7. Stephena, I was too newbie in that time, and don't know how to repositioning objects using a good code, so I use TIM1T in a loop, if INTIM then RESP0.

    Weird, I know :(

    ...

Where's AtariBoy? I never saw him again...

Edit : Here's the splitted DK sprite, for you test.

  8. XE is a multi plataform emulator, suport common systems like genesis, snes, sms and others, many in partial or bios emulation only.

The interesting is obscure systems emulated such PC-FX and now FM town Marty.

It's an obscure japanese console, launched in 91, had a powerfull hardware for their time, a 386 DX processor at 16 mhz, 2 Mb of RAM and cd-rom. Probably was very expensive too.

  9. Which would you recommend? I found this one: http://www.text-image.com/convert/ but it uses spaces in addition to just X and ., so you have to specify . and then manually replace the spaces with X.

Sorry Fort, I not followed more this topic.

Man, this bmptoascii is great! better than mine (AsciiArt is the name).

Use b/w image, black as pixels you want to show.

Configure BmpToAscii (file-options) to use only X and 0 and voilá :

The image need be restrict to 8 pixels wide for sprites. I scale up the atached image for a better visualization, the source is 50% smaller (1x1 pixel aspect).

Using a good text editor do auto raplace (replace all X to be 1) and you have your image code.

  10. The component with the gray/silver color is not a crystal, is a capacitor. The crystal is located on the main board of the console.

The crystal in the photo below has a 'plastic cover' with the code of the product.

    Crystal for PAL-M: 3,575611 MHz

    Crystal for NTSC: 3,579545 MHz

When you modify the console has to change the crystal.

    Right :)

Interesting, megaboy remember sega Game Gear, without lcd screen. And had buttons instead switches.

Dear Sr. Ferraz, can you take some photos of megaboy board and post here? I wondering see it's compact board. Only if easy to open, ofcourse. :)

  11. In right, that grey/silver retangle, I think is a cristal component, used for color information.

The mods ntsc to pal-m usually change this cristal.

Did you have a Megaboy console? With cart?

    I never saw one...

  12. I use a ASCII art program (there a lots of them, freeware).

These programs convert image into text format, and using a good text editor, you can replace the simbols by 0 and 1 or . and X like this example.

    ..X......XXXXX..XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.XXXXXX...
    ..X......XXXXX.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.XXXXXX...

  13. All Polivox games are pure NTSC.

Pal-M had NTSC resolution and speed (60 fps) but in PAL colors.

But, the colors are changed inside of Atari (color cristal? Tia?) not in rom, so undoubtly, Pal-M games are NTSC and run fine in NTSC Atari 2600, but Pal-M Atari2600 not work in NTSC TV (wrong color information).

The Brazilians definitely had the rom so it stands to reason Polyvox could too.

Polivox was authorized by Atari to produce their carts, so Polivox not produced pirates games. You can find Activision, Imagic and Parker Brothers games, authorized, in official Atari silver label carts :)

I realy like Polivox carts, and worth for collection.

  14. Very nice graphics, a note though is that the pixels are approximately 3:4, three times wide, four times high.

I didn't notice that, this pixel aspect is for ntsc?

Here's the last mockup update:

  15. I give a look on F8 processor assembly, but this realy complicate compared to 6502, and is a bit sad to learn becouse you be restrict to channel F, learning 6502 you have a wide range of possible machines to code for.

I'll not try the channel F, not for now.

But I admire people who code for it, like e5frog.

    Here's another mockup:
