Death of a TAC2 controller! Replacment needed!
misspent_youth replied to rheffera's topic in Atari 2600
As a Canadian, I must point out that it's called a Robertson head screw. I say as a Canadian because it was invented by a Canadian. Insert square Canuck jokes here. Back on topic, TAC-2 is my favourite joystick in my collection. I've had for many years problem free as well. Good luck getting it back up and running properly again. -
What has Atari taught the gaming industry?
misspent_youth replied to etschuetz's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Obviously Sega didn't learn this particular lesson very well. Guess that's why they and Atari shared the same fate as far as hardware manufacturing is concerned. -
Time to head over to his house and start breaking sh*t that he loves Good luck getting your Vader up and running again.

Free Taco Bell Atari Games Drawing
misspent_youth replied to tz101's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Wow, that really is mighty kind of you. I'm in Toronto, Canada, so please put my name in the hat. If it turns out that I win, and the Taco Bells here have this promotion, I will 'pay it forward' and do the same thing. -
Name One Moment In Video Game History...
misspent_youth replied to Philflound's topic in Classic Console Discussion
When I was young (I guess 11 or 12) the local mall had an arcade. it wasn't a great arcade at all, and kind of out of the way as far as location in the mall went. I used to deliver the local community paper and saw an ad that said the arcade was going to put all the games on free play for two hours every morning of March break. I went there the first day and nobody was there except me, my best friend and the machines. It was the first time we played Karate Champ. Lots of games of Subroc and Kung-Fu Master. probably the most fun I had in an arcade until a Chuck E. Cheese opened up in town. That arcade closed down within a month of that promotion. Guess they were hurting, but it was the start of the North American crash and all. -
So (and please excuse lack of technical knowledge here but)would boosting the strength of the signal help? I know that when i had fuzzy picture issues my cable company came in and tested the signal strength on the cable lines going from the wall to the tv. When they were weak, they installed an amplifier (basically a signal splitter that plugs in to the wall) and that cleared the problem up. Either way, the mod is the best option anyway

2 questionable Craigslist adds.

I don't like how 'orientated' has become a word (even in some dictionaries), when 'oriented' is the proper word. Why add the 'ate'? -
The complete list of classic video gaming forums

For Canucks, and those that love them, there is Classic Gaming Collectors of Canada -
You can do pretty well on more recent cases at the Legal Information Institute page from Cornell Law school, but for older stuff, Cebus Capucinis is right - only subscription services will have access to them, or - gasp - actual volumes of case reporters. Some law schools will actually allow visitors into their library with a visitor's pass, you just can't check out any books. Might be worth a look in your area. Sometimes the main courthouse in a city or town will have a small law library in it as well; they tend to restrict it to lawyers and judges, but unless they require ID to let you in, just try to look like you belong.

Do you consider yourself a late adopter?
misspent_youth replied to Pixelboy's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've gone from being an early adopter to a late adopter. I'm in Canada, and some stuff used to be harder to get early here. My parents started it all with a ColecoVision the Christmas it was released. The next system I owned was an NES, which we got in the US because they weren't readily available here (always sold out). I got a Genny pretty early by trading the NES for it (had a gen 1 made in Japan, not Taiwan), and then went bleeding edge crazy. Got a Sega CD and 32X pretty much when they came out, since I worked in a game store, then got a 3D0 within about a month of release (someone traded it so I got it used - USED - for $500; great system for the time, but what the hell was I thinking?!?). After that, I turned away from the early adopter mode. Got a PS1 near the end of its lifespan, and then a PS2 a year or two after release. I just got a Wii a few months ago (probably wouldn't have bothered bu wifey wanted it for WiiFit), and only have mild desire to upgrade. I suspect most early adopters turn into later adopters as they age and life gets more crowded, and late adopters just stay late adopters. -
now that's something that would bring the brand police to your door in a heartbeat. McD's polices their trademarks almost as zealously as Disney.

I spent a ton of time on the 3DO version of Need for Speed, and also played it on the PSX, and I just enjoyed the 3DO version more. I don't recall there being any extra features or tracks or anything (and I am going ONLY by memory of when I had the machine and game not long after they were released), it was just that the cars and traffic felt a little more realistic, in the PSX version the cars were just too jumpy. Not really a quantifiable difference, just a 'feel' thing for me. Same went for Road Rash. As for that guy in the videos, the best satisfaction was when you disabled that option and he appeared in the menu with tape over his mouth.

I've seen lots of joysticks with bite marks on the top, which makes some vague sense... watching someone else playing, chew on the joystick while you're waiting. I've never seen a cart with bite marks, though... I guess it must be pets, cause surely people never chewed carts. A buddy of mine used to have a pile of NES pads in the corner of his basement with chew marks on the corners. When I asked him about it, he said that he would bite the corners of the controller whenever he became super frustrated with a game or level. So, I'm sure that people did actually bite games. That leads me to a malady that can strike hardware, software or even users, which is the breakage that occurs from frustration with a game or level in a game. Tough to come up with a name for it, but since it occurs when rage overtakes common sense, I'm going with Hulkism. 'That joystick's been Hulked'. Of course, the name could be better, but you get the idea; the condition needs to be recognized.

Which consolde did you receive as an Xmas gift
misspent_youth replied to ddaniels's topic in Classic Console Discussion
In 1982 my family got my one and only video game love, a ColecoVision. My parents also bought us the Expansion Model 1 (the VCS adapter) and a copy of Asteroids and Pac-man. I still have the receipts for those. It was a great Christmas. -
For Sale - Genesis Crueball & Zombies Ate My Neighbors
misspent_youth replied to AtariLeaf's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Sorry for butting in on your thread, but I wonder someone wrote Ray Parker Junior on the cart because back in the day they thought it was an 8-track or something? -
Not sure about INTV, but for ColecoVision you can get the console apart without taking the faceplate sticker off. It's tricky, and not an exact science, but you can fiddle it apart basically by pulling the two halves apart at the rear a bit, and then trying to slip the catch points of the faceplate off of one half of the console at the front. Some prying is likely required around the expansion port. Again, not scientific or really even that useful, it's really a 'go by touch' kind of procedure. I just know that many people, myself included, have done it without breaking the case, and that way you don't have to ruin the sticker.

I like the 500xj/Champ Adapter option too. However, I wish I was adept enough to mod a TAC-2 to have the fire buttons operate separately. Then it would be TAC-2/Champ adapter FTW. Seconded on the mushiness of all the Wico command controls. I like the red ball, but wish it didn't have the fire button up top. As for the Power stick, I hate those fire buttons.

I've got to throw another vote in for Space Hulk. Very fun mix of strategy and FPS, and plays better than its PS1 counterpart. Also, Need for Speed had the best feel of any of the ports of that game. I know, 'feel' is a subjective thing, but my opinion is all I have to offer.

What is your rarest/most valuable NON-2600 game?
misspent_youth replied to Rev's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I don't collect much, just ColecoVision and a little 5200. Probably the rarest/most valuable stuff I have a CIB (AtariSoft) JungleHunt and a CIB Tapper for CV, and a Sean Kelly MultiCart for the 5200. -
Don't CV Parker Brothers carts have beige backgrounds on the labels and 2600 carts have silver backgrounds? Both those pics you linked have beige backgrounds, and at least one of the two is certainly a CV cart. Can someone please definitively confirm or disprove this?

Anyone ever call the old phone numbers?
misspent_youth replied to VectorGamer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I think it would be kinda funny to play it for laughs if you were recording for YouTube or something. Like those old Jerky Boyz and Touchstone Terrorist gags. Just keep stringing it out, and then go "Hey, wait a minute, the date on this magazine is 1984. Sorry." -

Man, I think me and my buddy were probably the sole reason why Super Sprint lasted at the corner store near us for as long as it did when we were kids. We must have pumped hundreds of dollars into that game over a couple of years. So fun... -

Please help with the ColecoVision Opgrade Module
misspent_youth replied to opcode's topic in Opcode Games
Considering that the module will only cost $15 more than were I to buy DKA by itself, I am in the camp of people that would actually end up buying both products (module and CV2). I can wait for the more advanced features. I also really like the fact that the light module will lead to more Opcode gaming goodness hitting my CV sooner.
