  1. I just gave this a shot (No, I didn't - keep reading!) on my Latitude, using Atari800Win Plus. I'm at a brickwall, and I figured I'd see if I managed to improve my score when using a CX-40 and an emulator, instead of the stock controllers on the big old 5200.

With the CX-40 plugged in to a Stelladaptor, I can't manage to play the game. I configured a800Win+ to read the controller in port 2, and can move, but I cannot fire. In Windows control panel, game controllers, the fire button tests perfectly fine.

Those of you playing this in an emulator, how are you doing it?

    Thanks

  2. I chose H.e.r.o.

I'd have picked Satan's Hollow, but mine locks up frequently, and it's unrealistic to think I'd manage to go through 3 or 4 waves without needing to reset the machine.

I'm using a Repro cart - might have been from CPUWIZ ? I think I bought it at a Philly Classic one year.

Is there a different version of the game for the 5200 that doesn't suffer this problem? Maybe I could use the newer version in an emulator, assuming the ROMs available.

  3. 31,500.

Doctor Clu - Granted, your score is nearly 6x mine, so I'm glad to defer to your advice, but I've been having success when I remember to try and fire shots down 'major thoroughfares', so to speak, while the wizard is on the prowl. Many times he'll appear in or travel through the path of the bullet when I do that.

  4. All week I was using an emulator and a CX-40 with my all-time favorite accesory, Joe Grand's magnificent Stelladaptor!

BUT, my palm and fingers were getting sore. Yesterday afternoon I hooked up my 5200 and began playing with a real 5200 controller. I was more comfortable, had a much easier time getting *to* Stage 5, and had no controller troubles at all.

I can only blame my own lack of skill for my troubles.

If any of you are looking to hire a computer geek in the Northern NJ area that is very skilled with networking, Windows and AD, a little bit knowledgeable concerning Linux, and at a level that will make YOU look really good (in comparison) at videogames, contact me!

  5. The entire numeric keypad is one rubber membrane keypad - i.e., it's one single part for all 12 buttons. The Start/Pause/Reset strip is a separate rubber strip, but again, the three buttons are all one single part.

The left two fire buttons are one part, and the right two fire buttons are one part (but they are identical - you don't need to order 1 left, and 1 right).

  6. Slowly (very slowly) but surely I'm getting better at this. I just managed to break 25,000. I guess the only extra life is 10,000. Bummer.

Once back in high school I played this at a friend's house on his 5200. At the time I was dying to get the game myself, but it was only available mail-order & I didn't trust mail-order back then. I never saw it retail anywhere!

    Enough small talk though!

    Currently, I'm at 25,015.

  7. This is somewhat offtopic, but last summer I was given a broken PS2. I managed to fix it and have been enjoying it ever since.

BUT, I'm compulsive about the aesthetic appearance of my electronics, and the PS2 has the previous owner's name written in large, sloppy letters, across the top of the console, in some sort of silver ink or paint. I haven't tried to remove it yet, but have been considering using GooGone ever since I was given the system.

(I'm compulsive, but I also procrastinate. The end result is I spend a very long time fixated and obsessed on an issue before I actually do anything about it!)

  8. surely we have some other hardware hackers here that can go as good a job in a fraction of the time

Not that I already didn't know several times over, but that statement makes it pretty clear that you have no idea of the complexity of this piece of hardware.

    Remo -

In all honesty, I am NOT trying to be a jerk or instigate anything here, but I also thought this item is simply a 7800 fitted into the VCS adapter case, and engineered to tap the power coming from the 5200. (And also the A/V lines, if it supports RF use?)

I certainly wouldn't have the skills to mimic the original 7800 board onto a new board that was shaped and sized for the different enclosure, but conceptually the whole thing doesn't seem all that complicated to me.

    What am I overlooking?

(Again, I'm sincerely curious, not trying to stir anything up.)

  9. I think that looks extremely cool, and I'd love one.

I have a couple of nitpicks, though:

    1) Controller - I'd keep my stock controllers. Fortunately, it seems that's perfectly possible with the unit.

    2) Paint job - I don't like the giant '5200' painted on the top. I loved the silver, and like the blue as well.

Love the menu, the built-in multicart, support for BBSB (which I've never played), and the reduced size. All in all, very nice!

  10. About the fonts...I made my own custom version of the 5200 os, operating system, rom, that I put in my own font from a set from the old Compute magazine. I used a "computer" font that looked quite cool. Football was no longer ugly to look at. Graphic 0 text is fine when it is small but doesn't look good when it gets enlarged. Downside...a couple of Activision games use a "cheat" to make the scores look bigger than they actually are. The far right zero, 0, is just eye candy! The scores in both River Raid and Megamania looked good except for the zero on the right which is graphic 0 text. Galaxian and Beamrider look great along with Baseball. Guess I'll have to dig out my ol' 5200 and get ready for Tempest! One font I'd like to try to make would be the Star Raiders text. Check out the K and the R and the V in the panel part at the bottom of the screen. Love to play Star Raiders with the top text or font matching the bottom of the screen text!

This sounds pretty neat. I'd love to see some screenshots if you've got any.

  11. If you haven't got any of those games, I'd expect the DP store would be happy to let you bring your system in, and test it with one of their copies of the games, assuming they've got those games on-hand. (Obviously I can't speak for them, of course.)

OR, if you ever go to the NAVA meets, PM or email me prior to the next one you plan to attend. I usually go to the gatherings, and I'll bring along my 5200 multicart and let you use it to test your system.

  12. I'd like to add one other possible explanation for people's apparent impatience, that may annoy those on the developer side of the 'divide'.

I'm very interested in this project, as much as I was in Adventure ][. I'm anxiously looking forward to the completion, but am firmly on the side of 'don't rush it'. For a few years Adventure ][ felt like it would never arrive, but I always preferred that Ron and the team take their time to do it right, rather than rush anything. Me and my 5200 aren't going anywhere. I feel the same way about Tempest.

As for my concerns that may explain why some appear impatient, previous posts have indicated that there will be no pre-orders for the game, and no wait-lists. This is understandable. BUT, I'm worried that the game will be finished, announced, and sell-out before I'm aware it's available. I'll then be like one of the folks that wanted a copy of Battlesphere, but was stuck watching the cartridges sell on ebay every few weeks for a couple of hundred bucks or more.

So maybe people are just checking-in vocally, to try and assure themselves they won't miss it?

  13. That looks cool - Where/how did you get the plastic case for the controller?

Thanks. Assuming you mean the 5200 controller, I scrapped a surplus product that I picked up on the 'net. But, the exact same case is available from a place called "Pac-Tec" or "PacTec", I don't remember right now. If you can't find it, I'll look it up for you.

(If you mean the Vectrex controller, that's a hacked up NES controller. I don't recommend doing it that way. It's way too tedious, at least for me.)

I do think the 5200 controller is neat too, but I was referring to the Vectrex controller. I was curious how you managed to turn an NES controller into that? Did you actually cut sections out of one NES controller and glue them together into the new, 4-button controller?
