As much as I like the idea of getting better sprites I like the original release of bomb jack for the atari 8 bit because it came out of nowhere and was already a very polished product. BTW, what is the last release for public download (got a little confused with bomb jake/bomb jack)?

*New* pictures of our Atari 8-bit setups
patjomki replied to TapperP's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Well, I have to admit that I don't like case modding very much but at least it shows passion for ATARI and that's what counts. 😉 -
I'll smile if the improved ATARI version with TIX's sprites is ready before the improved c64 version will see the light of the day (it is already in development for more than five years and the motivation for the c64 coders was the atari version which they considered ways better than the original c64 conversion). 😀😀😀

Well, this computer for sure looks ...different... 😈 -
I was waiting for such a dust cover but do you plan to sell a version for jags with cd rom as well?
-
Keeping my fingers crossed that demand for the 600xl cover will be bigger than expected. Never heard of the dust covers for the jaguar from grey. Do you have any link available?
-
Looks good (as always) but I'd love to see a dust cover for both my 600xl and jaguar with cd rom.

Unicorns season: Prince of Persia for the A8!
patjomki replied to rensoup's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Lego 😂 Seems like the postprocessing of my plasma tv in fact decides that it should only show one of the two frame buffers (although I disabled any processing options in the tv's menu). The picture itself doesn't show any flickering but the weird font, so the photo shows the current output of the tv. There is no movement at all. Apart from that I don't consider the vintage 15 inch tv big 😀 but the flickering is noticeable. To avoid any test issues I also tested the picture not only with my 800xl on this tv but also with my 600xl and the flickering is there as well. But as you already told it will be switchable so I can use the non-flickering version on the small tv and the flickering version on the larger tv (to avoid any lego effect). -

I tested it on an old Grundig color TV P40-345 CTI which I bought in 1987. It has a screen size (diagonal) of approx. 40cm/15 inch. Great that you decided to make it switchable because due to the testing that I've already done I have been testing it now with my 600XL on a 55inch plasma TV (both normal video and vbxe output) and with both interfaces the screen doesn't flicker at all but has a very strange font appearance. -

Unicorns season: Prince of Persia for the A8!

I second that, although the outline font irritates a little (comparing with other versions). IMHO the font is also a little too big but that might be because I am used to all the other conversions. Like @TheRaven81 suggested @rensoup might have decided like he did because this way has advantages for the rest of the intro? BTW, I tested the latest version on my crt/pal atari 800xl and flickering is noticeable so I'd still prefer the none flickering version. Nevertheless I am eagerly awaiting the final version because we are already waiting for more than 30years now and a8 library just simply deserves a conversion (flickering or not). P.S.: Also dungeons -
Unicorns season: Prince of Persia for the A8!
patjomki replied to rensoup's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I tested all three versions on two different ATARIs one 800XL(PAL/CRT) and a second 600XL (PAL/TFT). Example 1 of the flickering versions flickers like hell on my crt but example 2 there also flickers a lot and I have to admit that I can't stand any of those flickering examples on my crt ATARI. With tft things are different. Example 1 still flickers too much while example 2 flickers less. It is still noticeable but better. The non-flickering version looks best on both machines so if you don't go for José's version (which I like most) I'd vote for the non-flickering version. Anyway, what I recommend regardless of flickering or not is to eliminate the typing error and to write "daughter" instead of "daugther" in the final version. 😈 -

I suppose that I and O stand out is done on purpose. And yes, you are right. Having the letters all the same (brightest) luminance would be better. But as @rensoup is going a different way I guess its a rather academic view. 😉 -

Unfortunately that is a restriction of the a8 when using hires fonts. So for the letters you can only have a different luminance of the background colour. That means there is no way to get white letters with for example a purple background in hires. Only very bright purple letters on a purple background. -

What do you mean by "flat"? Here are c64 and dos examples. -

As emkay isn't allowed to write here I copied his screen from the other thread. I'd vote for it. -

Well, if you want to have the looks of the apple ii version with textured background. Younger versions like dos, macintosh or c64 don't have textured background. -

Are you going for hires fonts with pm left and right of the text? -
Knocking sound instead of silence (Pokey)
patjomki replied to patjomki's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
Basic was just used for rapid testing purposes. 😉 In the meantime I found some useful information here (with such a thread title information was a little bit hidden): https://atariage.com/forums/topic/212280-pokey-question-distortion-12-donkey-kong-bass/ Well, Phaeron explained it there. 😀 Although it's only explained for 64Khz. -

Thanks for your reply. That did the trick. Unfortunately this requires a lot of manual work because this is not the only frequency where it happens. Well, I guess I have to do all the work that Synthpopalooza did with the NTSC frequency table. But I am quite happy that poly noise is working now. 😀 Edit: BTW, my example was PAL land, so as far as I understood it's 1.77MHz mode instead of 1.79 for AUDCTL, or am I wrong? -

patjomki replied to patjomki's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
Ok. ATM I am playing around with 16-Bit-Mode of POKEY. I discovered a strange behaviour. Here is the BASIC listing: 10 POKE 53775,3: REM SKCTL, should always be 3 for POKEY initialization 20 POKE 53768,120: REM AUDCTL, channel 1+3 with 1,77Mhz instead of 64Khz (PAL), channels 1+2,3+4 as 16-Bit 30 POKE 53761,0: REM AUDC1, silence channel 1 40 POKE 53763,32+15: REM AUDC2, triangle wave (5-bit then 4-bit polycounter), max. volume 50 POKE 53762,15: REM AUDF2 high byte of frequency 60 POKE 53760,183: REM AUDF1, low byte of frequency - both combined should play a 220Hz waveform (triangle) 1000 GOTO 1000 The strange behaviour is. Sometimes when I start my program there is complete silence but most of the times the tune is played. What is wrong? When playing square waves (line 40: POKE 53763,224+15: REM AUC2 = 224+15 = $ef) the tone is always played. -

No. Was playing with a joystick but thanks a lot for the tip. Has been a while since I finished PoP (on ATARI ST) so I forgot about holding the button. Anyway, it did the trick so I could finish levels 2 and 4. I the meantime I also finished level 5. 😀 It was fun to play. Thanks to all persons involved for these levels so far. -

Those five levels are amazing! Fantastic work. I play it on my 800XL (PAL) and could finish levels 1 and 4 but couldn't finish level 2 and 3, well I guess its the controls. Whatever I try I can't jump back from the platform that opened the door to level 2. 😥 -

Not only because of more frames our version looks so much better even with less colours.😀
