  1. I doubt that the 8-bd would affect the other machine. definately check for an isolation transformer for the monitor
  2. what grafx are you looking for? I used to search for stuff all the time. I'll see if I can dig up some of my old links
  3. can't say that any of these things would be good for the games or monitor. any time you have a grounding issue you run the risk of frying something out. also you could get a little shock from the machine lmk your progress once again I will be up all night.
  4. good call CN if you drop out the -5v it would lose video and go into "diagnostic" maybe there is a capacitor that is not holding I have a schematic of the boards. I'll try to find it and trace it out.
  5. sometimes when I get dragged into a conversation with someone somehow or another my interests and hobbies come up and I feel the need to tell them about fixing and building arcades, making custom arcades, and my star wars collecting habbits....and then I feel like the biggest tool in the world ...especially if I happen to be talking to a hot chick. nothing says sexy like a guy talking about working on motherboards and figuring out integrated circuits. luckily I do have one cool thing to fall back on and that is that I can also mention that I am doing a ground up restoration on a 1955 chevy belair. great so i'm a dork and a redneck. maybe I should just keep my mouth shut. anyone else out there have any thoughts, feeling or comments?
  6. line filter I would 1st check all connections and resoldier them thats about all you can do with it besides replace it (check your ground) the amp you will have to trace your wiring back to the amp take down the numbers off of it and replace it unless you can find the specs on it test the input and output on it. check www.therealbobroberts.com for the amp another thought....you should check all of your connectors in to the boards look for freyed wires and you may need to reflow some soldier on the board side of the connetors if there are any that are not edge connects. also is this a dedicated game or a conversion. someone may have taken a short cut and not put in an isolation transformer for the monitor
  7. yea. I can walk you through a few things where do you want to start. you will have to do some searching since I have not worked on your game before meaning I won't be able to tell you exactally where everthing is.. you will also need a multimeter
  8. I have had a few games with the same problem and I have found the problem to be one or a combo of these things 1. bad line filter on the incoming power 2. bad audio amp 3. bad grounding 4. 12v, 120v, 5v (or what ever volt the particular games takes) wiring running to close to your speaker, or video lines. hopes this helps. if you have any questions about any of this I will be on here all night (I'm working night shift at the hospital tonight) wade
  9. if any one wants to know how to hack the controller... I made one of these for myself a couple of years ago. also made an atari 7800 one as well. pm me if interested and I'll dig up the pinout for you
  10. yeah I got mine going by a combo of these things don't know exactally which one cause a I stupidly did them all at once. re-flowed the connector for the daughterboard and the other connectors and switched out the z80( ihad a known good one so I just went ahead and did it). unfortunately as I said the board went dead 6 months later, ram failure ,had little sprites all over the screen what a pain to cause those chips have no carrier they are soldiered right into the boar d
  11. you are right MC borads are a pain in the ass. but well worth the effort especially when you are bringing one back for the dead
  12. I would start out by checking the usual things as mentioned before. then I would check the 5v and 12v at the edge connector of the main harness. then I would turn the machine on and give those ribbon connectors a wiggle and see if anything happens. if you still get no response I would trace out those loose connectors you were talking about and see where they gomaybe something is missing. also try adding a credit...maybe it is just a video problem. if all else fails then try smacking it on the side.. that always used to work in the old days. other than that you are looking at a board failure. let me know how things pan out for you ps just kidding about the smack it thing
  13. if you do want to fix this monitor I have several replacement chassis laying about. here is what you have to do to make it "safe" to work on disconnect the power(not that you would leave it plugged in) take a long piece (2ft)of well insulated wire (like an old spark plug wire) and strip it at both ends attach one end to the metal shaft of a long flathead screwdriver attach the other end to the metal body of the monitor carefully stick the flathead under the suction cup of the monitor tube until it touches the electrode you may or may not hear a crackle do this a few times you have now discharged you monitor I know it sounds a little freaky but I have worked on hundreds of monitors and have never been bit after it is discharged you can remove the suction cup, fly back and pull the chassis even if you don't end up using this monitor this info may come of some use to you in the future
  14. try looking at your connector first. then at the connector from main pcb to daughter card. if you run into a dead end there try swapping out just the z80 chip. if that still doesent work then you probably have a reset circuit error. please post your findings. I have the same game and have had simular problems. I got past the grid problem but then about 6 months later the board went dead again and I haven't torn in to it again
  15. hey curt, I am into building computers and arcades. I live in schenectady and I have family in new paltz so I travel your way quite often. if you need or want to outsource any of your work I would like to help out. if you want to get in touch with me you can email me at [email protected] I have experience in all of the areas you touched upon in your post. thanks wade
