For awhile, I have been thinking I would never get another gaming system...I figured I had more than enough systems and games to keep me busy for the rest of my life. But I decided to rethink that and get a Playstation 3 since I've been told at my favorite DVD site that the PS3 is also a very fine Blu-ray player and I've been thinking of getting one of those. So the system will serve two purposes, as both a game playing machine and an upgrade in my movie-watching system. I ordered a PS3 on Wednesday and it could arrive either late this week or, probaboy more likely, early next week. I forget how it's coming.

Of course, this brings up the question of what will be my early game purchases for this system. I may not actually buy any PS3 games until after Christmas. I told my family I ordered this so they could get me either PS3 games or Bllu-ray movies for it for Christmas. If they don't get it for me, I imagine my first game for it could be Red Dead Redemption which I understand is one of the best games for the PS3 so far...and I do like westerns. I'm also a big baseball fan so I know I'll want MLB The Show so the question there is do I get the version out now and play it right away...or do I wait and get next year's edition? I also need to get myself a new TV so that my Blu-rays will look their best. My nephew is recommending I got a Vizio (he has the 37-inch set) while people at my DVD site say I shouldn't consider anything other than a Sony or a Samsung. I was originally planning on getting a Sony, so I may stick with that thought.

I got 3 more games on Monday...two for the original Playstation and one for the Xbox...

Batman Forever: The Arcade Game (PS1)
    Batman: Gotham City Racer (PS1)
    Aquaman (XBox)

I have heard that Aquaman is one of the worst games ever...as bad as Superman 64? Never having played Superman 64, I guess I'll never know. I was thinking the other day that there was a Lobo game and I'd need to get that if I'm to have every DC Comics video game that was made for my systems but it looks like it never came out for the SNES though it did apparently make it out for the Genesis (which I don't have).

I was wondering if I could receive at least one game in the mail every mailday this week since I had ordered over a dozen of them. Today is day #4 and I received yet another...so only 2 more days to go! Today's arrival...

    Catwoman for the GameCube

I have heard this is a pretty bad game but I've also been trying recently to complete my collection of all the games featuring DC Comics characters for systems I own. That means I even have to get (shudder!) Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis! So now I have this game. I think about all I have to get to complete this mini-collection now is that Aquaman game and the Batman games for the original Playstation...and they are coming.

I've had my DS for awhile...4 or 5 years, I think. Surprisingly, though, I don't have that many games for it. I seem to get them in spurts...I find a few here and there I want...then I go months (sometimes maybe a year or more) before I think to get anymore. This past week, I got 4 more...

    1. Batman: The Brave and the Bold
    2. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
    3. Major League Baseball 2K10
    4. Retro Atari

The baseball game is the only one I've played so far. I like it...though it does have one annoying glitch. I've played about 3 or 4 games already where as soon as the last out is made, the game freezes. I have to shut the unit off and the freezing makes the game nonexistant...I have to play that game over again. Still, I enjoy the game apart from that...it is one of two DS baseball games I have...I also have Baseball Advance which was a GBA title. The problem with the Advance game is no one is still on the same team now. And the other, MLB Power Pros, doesn't offer the option to play full seasons. A lot of people don't want to bother with full season playings but I do...what can I say, baseball is my favorite video game sport.

With these latest 4 DS purchases, it means I now have 29 games for the Nintendo DS (not counting about 4 GBA games I can also play on the system). This means when I get one more game I'll have 30 for the system and there will then be only one system among the 8 that I own that I won't have 30 games for...the Atari Jaguar. I think I once had over 40 games for that system...now I am pretty sure I have either 21 or 22 (I sold a number of them). I'm not positive of the exact number, though as I just went to where I thought all my Jag games were...and there's only 15 there. The others are hiding somewhere...or my cats took off with them somewhere. Well, it seems proper that if a couple cats want to play video games, they're going to want to play the Jaguar...

In the last few years, I have sold or given away several of my gaming systems. While I still enjoy gaming, I don't play as often as I used to and it seems many systems just don't hold much interest for me anymore. I've been selling or giving away systems I just don't play anymore...I figure if I haven't played it in a year or two, why keep it? Here are the systems I have struck from my collection in the last 2-3 years...

    Atari 2600
    Atari 5200
    Atari Lynx
    ColecoVision
    Nintendo 64
    Sega Genesis
    Sega Saturn

Wow, that's even more than I thought. Other systems I used to have but which I sold or traded away more than 3 years ago would include the Atari 7800, 3DO, original Game Boy, and Sega Master System. So what systems do I still have? Here is that list...

Atari Jaguar (Yes, I do still have one Atari system left!)
    Nintendo DS
    Nintendo GameCube
    Super Nintendo
    Sega Dreamcast
    Sony Playstation
    Sony Playstation 2
    Xbox

I think that's it. No, I do not currently own (and never have) any of the latest systems...no PS3, Wii or Xbox 360. I'm happy with what I have. These days I've mostly been playing my DS and my PS2...I actually recently had my first perfect game for any baseball video game...I did that on MLB Power Pros 2008 for the PS2 using Jake Peavy.

It's been awhile since I bought a game...I'm not sure when that was exactly or what it was (LEGO Batman, perhaps?) but it was last year. So I finally made my first purchase of 2009 a day or two ago. I noticed earlier this week that Wal-Mart had a selection of games discounted to an even $10.00. One caught my eye, Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection, but I didn't buy it right away. Instead, I came home and checked out a gaming message board and did a search for this game and it seemed many people liked the game. So I went back and bought the game...I guess I was lucky, because the first time I noticed it, they only had one copy of the game and when I went back, that one copy was still there.

I like pinball games...I have several including Pinball Dreams and Super Pinball on the SNES, a handful on the original Playstation and some others but this is my first pinball game for the PS2. This game has 8 tables and they even tell you what year these pinball games were originally released...they range from Gorgar (1979) to Funhouse and Whirlwind (both from 1990). The games are bright and colorful and a lot of fun, but it'll take me a bit of time to get used to them, right now any game I play is a fairly short one. But I'm having fun with it.

The question is kind of rhetorical...of course, there are good super-hero video games. But it seems there are more bad ones than good ones. That seems kind of strange when you think that super-heroes and action video games ought to be a marriage made in crossover heaven...but it hasn't always been that way.

Batman has probably been the worst offender. Has any super-hero had more bad games than the big Bat guy? There was Batman: Dark Tomorrow and Batman Forever and so many others. There are also some (like a couple PS1 games) that I never got to play but which I never really heard good things about. But there are a few that I've played that I liked including a couple for the Super Nintendo. Batman Returns was actually only the second game I ever got for the system. Today many think of it as a glorified Final Fight-type game and perhaps it is, but it's still a great version of one with really nice music and graphics and fun gameplay. I also like The Adventures of Batman & Robin which was done in the style of Batman: The Animated Series. The Batman games since then have not exactly been winners...most were mediocre and a few were downright awful.

Superman is my favorite super-hero but he hasn't done as well as Batman because he doesn't really have one outstanding game with the possible exception of Superman for the Atari 2600. Since then? Ehhhh. The Death and Return of Superman had its moments on the SNES where you got to control 4 different versions of Superman. One main problem with that game was it had no saves so you had to play it from start to finish in one setting and that wasn't easy since it had about 16 levels. I've heard mixed reports on Superman: The Man of Steel (Xbox) and Superman: The Shadow of Apokolips (PS2, later ported over to the GameCube) but never played either. I never played Superman Returns, based on the movie, but maybe I should pick up an Xbox version of it now since they're dirt cheap. Of course, people to today consider Superman 64 for the Nintendo 64 one of the worst games ever made.

It seems Batman and Superman make up about 90% of the games based on DC Super-Heroes, though there've been a few others. There was a Flash Game Boy title which I had, played briefly and then quickly lost. Aquaman had one game by himself which was bad enough to be touted by many as a stinker of the year. And the Justice League has gathered together a few times...Justice League Task Force, a 2D fighting game for the 16-bit machines. I kind of liked that but wish it had more characters. And the XBox and PS2 got Justice League: Heroes in which you got to play as various members of the troupe. Now, of course, there's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, a team-up I'm not surprised to see...after all, didn't the Marvel guys fight the Street Fighter gang? If anything's surprising, it's that it took this long. Unfortunately, I'll probably never get to play it as I doubt it's coming to the PS2 and I don't have a PS3 or Xbox 360. Oh well!

I've talked about the DC guys mainly because that's always been my comic book company of choice but the Marvel heroes have had plenty of videogame adventures, too. Spider-Man may have fared the best of anyone with decent adventures on the Atari 2600, SNES, PS1, Dreamcast and GameCube/PS2/Xbox trio. The X-Men have gotten a few decent games, too, especially the X-Men: Legends games and The Hulk has gotten a few good games. Unfortunately, games for such other heroes as Iron Man, Fantastic Four (especially the PS1 game), and a few others have definitely been found wanting.

But there are a few good super-hero games out there. You just have to look for them.

Today I continued my ongoing project of playing all my games or at least as money of them as I can find...I really need to come up with a name for this project...Roger's Play 'Em All Project? Nah, I don't think so...

    5. Black (EA)

I'm not sure when this came out...I have a Greatest Hits edition and got mine last Christmas but today was the first time I actually got around to putting it in my machine. It's a modern warfare game (I think I heard Iran mentiioned in the live action opening) and has some really nice production values. The original score is performed by a symphony orchestra and sounds really nice and dramatic. Despite the fact it's modern warfare, the gameplay reminds me of Medal of Honor...go around, find weapons and pick them up as well as ammo for them...it seems you can only carry two weapons at a time, though. There are also first-aid kits you pick kup to replenish your health. You do see soldiers that are on your side as well as legions of enemy soldiers. You get to off them with a variety of weapons in this first-person shooters and it's very intense as they seem to be everywhere. I've not yet completed the first missiion but I'm not surprised...it takes a bit of time to get used to the gameplay and everything. All in all, I'm having fun. Roger's rating: 8.

A day after receiving LEGO Batman, I received the FPS game Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection. I know this hasn't gotten very good reviews but at under $8.00, I figure I'm not taking too much of a loss if I hate it. The last couple of days I'd been playing some Duke Nukem 3D on the Saturn so I'm definitely in the mood for some 1st person shooting. I still have a couple games coming which are also FPS games: Red Faction (the first one) for the PS2 and the first Call of Duty on the Xbox. I notice the newest Call of Duty (out next week, I think) is coming to the PS2 so I may get that though I'm thinking of waiting to see if I can eventually get it for $20 or less.

Regarding video games (and DVDs and audio CDs), I just have way too much stuff. Now I'm thinking of not only weeding out the lesser games but possibly also throwing out some complete systems (and, of course, the game libraries that go with those). Some would say I'm crazy and that I'll miss those systems. But in the last year, I've given away both my Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis systems and I don't miss them one bit. So I feel I can throw out a couple more systems I've never been into all that much and will never miss them. I have 13 systems and might try getting rid of at least 3 of them...maybe one a week for 3 weeks...until I'm down to an even 10. Here's what I currently own...

    1. Atari 5200 (Atari's 2nd cartridge system)
    2. Atari Lynx (Color portable unit)
    3. Atari Jaguar (Atari's final system)
    4. ColecoVision
    5. Super Nintendo (SNES, Super NES, it goes by many names)
    6. Nintendo 64 (Nintendo's final cartridge-based console)
    7. Nintendo GameCube
    8. Nintendo DS (Portable)
    9. Sony PlayStation
    10. Sony PlayStation 2
    11. Sega Saturn
    12. Sega Dreamcast
    13. Microsoft Xbox

So which systems will I be getting rid of? It's easier to begin by stating some systems I am definitely keeping...GameCube, Xbox, Playstation 1 & 2, Nintendo DS, Super Nintendo...after that, it becomes unclear. I do like the Atari 5200 though it's been a couple of years since I layed it...there are at least a couple games I have for it that I really like that aren't available on other systems (Pengo, Miner 2049er). The Jaguar has a couple games I love (Wolfenstein 3D, Tempest 2000, Alien Vs. Predator) so I want to keep pit, too...and the Lynx is a portable and doesn't take much space. So, for now, it looks like the ones to go will be ColecoVision, Nintendo 64 (which I never got all that into) and Sega Saturn. Subtract those from my collection and I'll be down to my goal of 10 systems. The funny thing is a relative of mine asks me once in awhile when I'll get a new gaming system...but that's something I don't see happening.

Last year I thought I was done with the PS2, so much so that I put what I thought were all my games for the system and let my sister-in-law give them away to a nephew of hers. Then I came across one game I missed including...then another...then I found a third that was actually inside my PS2. I couldn't find the case for it so I must've included the case and manual for that game (Rumble Roses) among the games I gave away so now I only have the game disc itself. Maybe I'll stop up at Gamestop some time and see if I can find a used copy of the game real cheap where I'd get the case and manual for the game. I asked my sister-in-law to ask about the case I gave away but it's been so long now that I imagine her nephew has long ago discovered there was no game inside and he probably threw the case away by now. The last few months I've also added to my PS2 library by picking up some cheap games (one or two used but mostly new) and now my current PS2 library stands at 11 games:

    Black
    CMT Presents Karaoke Revolution Country
    Jak II
    Maximo: Ghosts To Glory
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
    Medal of Honor: Vanguard
    MLB Power Pros
    MLB 08: The Show
    MVP 07 NCAA Baseball
Pop Cap Hits Vol. 1 (Mainly bought for Bejeweled 2 which I've enjoyed playing on my brother's computer)
    Rumble Roses

All 3 of my baseball games were bought within the last 2 weeks or so. I bought MLB 08: The Show first after playing a demo of the PS3 version. I don't have a PS3 so I had to settle for the PS2 version. At least it was nice to have a (mostly) accurate roster for my Pittsburgh Pirates since the last baseball video game I bought is now 2 years old. I like it (especially since the pitching is similar to MVP Baseball, my favorite baseball title). It does seem a bit slow at times, though. On my birthday, I received MLB Power Pros which I had ordered from Amazon.com...I basically got it for free since I used an Amazon gift certificate towards it. My nephew Derek told me about this game, calling it an RBI Baseball-like game. That's not entirely accurate but this has a similar look to it. The day I got this, I went to my brother's home and he and I and Derek played a couple games of this against each other and I've played this virtually every day since then. Finally, yesterday I went to Wal-Mart and picked up MVP 07 NCAA Baseball which appears to finally be the final EA baseball title...they lost the MLB license and have had 2 years of using MVP as a college game. I like the game though I don't know about the recuiting part of the game and am not crazy about how, when you press the "X" button to speed things along you also happen to cut off the announcer in mid-sentence. I've now played 3 games and am currently 0-3 as the West Virginia Mountaineers...but I'll keep plugging away.

One of the gaming boards I visit has been having a fun thread about a GameCube game titled "Final Fight: Round 2". It turns out that the GameCube version of this title has the SNES edition of "Super Punch-Out!" in it so people have been posting new covers for the game with the Super Punch-Out characters as the cover models. I love Super Punch-Out! and it is, in fact, one of my favorite games on the system. So, after thinking about it for several days, I decided to get it and found it online for abot $5 plus shipping. The only problem is that I thought my GameCube collection had been set...I had reached 150 titles back in January and decided that was it for me. So getting this game would bring it to 151 titles which doesn't sound nearly as good as 150 titles. So now I will probably try to decide which other game will go to make room for the newcomer. I might try to do a marathon...start with 1080 Avalanche and Aggressive Inline and play through my entire collection alphabetically and mark down my thoughts and scores for each. Perhaps I'll do that here on this blog. It will obviously take awhile. I actually already have a few ideas on what might go...do I really need both MVP PBaseball 2004 and MVP Baseball 2005, for instance? And there are a few titles in my collection I haven't gotten to yet that I hear are less than perfect so this would give me a chance to decide for myself. I will probably finally do this marathon which I've thought of doing for awhile...I will plan on beginning the first of November. If I make it through all my GameCube games, then I might continue and begin doing it for other collections as well. Today GameCube...tomorrow, SNES!

Awhile back, I read that they were going to do some video games based on The Price Is Right...I'm kind of surprised they never did them before. At any rate, I understand they are out now...there's a version for the Wii, one for the DS and a version for the PC and Mac. I don't own a Wii, so I won't be getting that so I might consider getting one for either the PC or the Nintendo DS. I need to research this...and I know many games based on TV game shows, at least recently, have been rather lacking. I know one recent case was Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? The problem with that one was that questions just repeated too much. In the case of The Price Is Right, you need to guess item prices in some cases and I'm already hearing that those repeat a bit often. Still, I enjoy The Price Is Right a lot so I'm considering it. Perhaps I'll start checking in at varioius places and watch for the DS version to come on sale really cheap...

A lot of people like to ask others what system they have the most for (for me it's either the PS1 or the SNES as I have about 200 games for both) but I thought I'd mention the system I have the fewest number of games for. For me, it's the PlayStation 2 though this will change by the end of the week. This is because my PS2 library is my smallest by a single game and I have an order coming with 2 games in it (the two Hot Shots game for the system). When they arrive, the PS2 will move up and my Nintendo DS will then be my system with the fewest games. But then, I plan to get the MLB Power Pros edition coming out for the DS at the end of the month and I'll have a tie. But, for today, the PS2 is alone as far as my smallest library for a system goes. Here are the titles I have for it...

    Black
CMT Presents Karaoke Revolution Country (I bet no one reading this has this one!)
    Hot Shots Tennis
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Jak II
    Katamari Damacy
    Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
    Medal of Honor: Vanguard
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
    MLB 08: The Show
    MLB Power Pros
    MLB Power Pros 2008
    MVP NCAA Baseball 07
PopCap Hits Vol. 1 (A pair of puzzle games including Bejeweled 2)
    Ratchet & Clank
    Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
    Ratchet: Deadlocked
    Rumble Roses
    The Simpsons Game
    SNK Arcade Classics

I seem to concentrate on one system at a time and I do seem to have been concentrating on the PS2 lately. Besides the two Hot Shots Golf games I have coming, other recent acquisitions above include Hot Shots Tennis and The Simpsons Game. I was glancing at a website an hour or two ago and noticed a new women's volleyball game for the system but I doubt I will get it. One website gave it a 20% out of a possible 100. Too bad, it could've been my 3rd all female sporting game, joining Rumble Roses (wrestling) and WTA Tour Tennis (tennis). The only other one I know of is a Mia Hamm (soccer) game which I understand didn't get such good reviews either.

Added Note: After taking the trouble to post this, it suddenly dawned on me that while I have 21 games for the PS2 right now, I also have exactly 21 titles for the Atari Jaguar as well! Thus, when I receive those 2 PS2 games I have coming and it moves out of last place, my smallest library won't suddenly become the DS but will instead be the Jaguar which will remain at 21 titles. As Homer Simpson would say, D'oh!

I went out yesterday in search of a specific PS2 title I've heard about...but did not find it. Instead, I settled for buying a second PS2 memory card and one other game, Ratchet: Unlocked. I think that the only Ratchet & Clank title I'll need after the previously ordered titles come in will be the one subtitled "Size Matters". Maybe I'll order that one next.

When I got back home, I got online and ordered two other titles including the one that I had been looking for at the store, SNK Arcade Classics, Vol. 1 which has 16 arcade games on it...games originally designed for the Neo Geo. I also ordered the first Jak & Daxter game...I have Jak II in my collection already so I figured I should get the first one in my collection again. I don't know if I'll get Jak III yet. I believe this gives me 6 PS2 games currently on order as I had previously ordered the first 3 Ratchet & Clank games and Katamari Damacy.

My last post was made over 3 months ago. Part of that was because in July, I went into the hospital and had open-heart surgery. I'm still recovering from that but will try to get back to this blog on at least a semi-regular basis. These days, I seem to be concentrating on two systems, one console (Nintendo GameCube) and one portable (Nintendo DS). I may pull out my Xbox system soon so I have two consoles hooked up...I gave away all my PS2 games except for one so that's not really one I'll be playing...and I never did get a PS3, Wii or Xbox 360 and don't plan to even if I could find one.

My family has helped me try to get my apartment organized and as a result, many of my video games and DVDs got put away into storage tubs...I'm still missing a few GameCube games here and there but I've managed to gather aboout 112 of them together. The 5-10 of them I'm still missing should show up eventually. Two such games I've not found yet are All-Star Baseball 2003 and 2004...of course, some would consider those to be a small loss. Besides, I still have handy my favorite baseball game, MVP Baseball, which I've been playing a lot so my need for a little hardball is easily taken care of. Regarding my other systems which are currently put away, I may be getting rid of some more systems. Giving away my PS2 games was the first effort in my move to thin out my gaming collection...but it probably won't be the end of that effort.
  17. Rogmeister
Below I will basically be reprinting what I previously wrote about my first ten DS games...plus I'll be adding four titles which I have bought since then. I guess 14 titles isn't a big collection but I'm not going for a complete collection...

    1. Animal Crossing: Wild World is the sequal to the GameCube hit. I don't love it as much as I did the original. Maybe I'm just tired of the whole thing.
    2. Konami Classics Series: Arcade Hits is another version of Konami's Arcade Classics (which came out on the PS1 years ago) but they've actually added more games...this collection has 15 games where the PS1 compilation had 10. Among my old favorites here: Scramble, Time Pilot, Track & Field, Circus Charlie and Contra.
    3. Metroid Prime Hunters is one of my more recent purchases and I haven't really started playing it yet.
    4. Metroid Prime Pinball was one of my first 5 games on the other hand and one I enjoy. I would like to see some more traditional pinball games come to the DS, however.
    5. New Super Mario Bros. is terrific and one I played pretty much non-stop for a couple of weeks.
    6. Nintendogs: Dachshund & Friends is one I like a lot but haven't played in awhile. I should get back to it soon. There's a cat version coming out (but not made by Nintendo as I recall) called Purr Pals. I'll pick that up, too, if it gets good reviews.
    7. Purr Palls is basically a cat version of Nintendogs...it's by a company other than Nintendo so it may not be as good (I have yet to start playing it).
    8. Puyo Pop Fever is the game I got yesterday. I got the GameCube version recently and enjoyed it so much that I decided to pick up this portable version of it. Added note: This is one of those addictive games where you just have to keep playing. I'm glad I got it.
    9. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is, despite the subtitle, basically a port of the first Resident Evil game. There is also an added mode for more intense action. I notice the game has subtitles which is odd since I can clearly understand the dialogue in this game.
    10. The Sims 2 is my first Sims portable game. This is probably the next game I'll really try to get into on my DS.
    11. Super Mario 64 DS is another game I need to get back to and play. I really like the Mario games, evidenced by how many I have, both on this and other systems.
    12. Super Princess Peach is another game that takes place in the Mario universe.
    13. Yoshi's Island DS is yet another. I haven't really played this yet...I hope Baby Mario doesn't bawl like he did in the SNES version...that was so annoying
    14. Zoo Keeper was my first puzzle game on the system...I find it interesting that the two puzzle games I have for the DS are so far the only DS games I have made by a company other than Nintendo. I do need to get at least one more puzzle game. I think it's a law that every gamer has to have Tetris....

A month or so ago, I ordered Peter Jackson's King Kong for the GameCube. The seller had apparently put their listing in the wrong section as the game I received was the Xbox version of that game. I was told I could return it for a refund but I opted to keep it and pass it along to a friend. Last week, I again ordered this game for the GameCube. And today the order was cancelled. This is probably a case of the seller thinking he had the game but turned out he was mistaken. So now I've decided to order it directly from Amazon.com itself. If they can't get me a game, I'll know there's a real conspiracy here.

I did get 4 games yesterday. I went to EB Games after I heard they were having a sale this week...a "Buy 2 Games, Get 1 Free" that applies to all used games. The three games I got are all GameCube games. I got The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (and Master Quest), Super Mario Strikers and Mega Man Anniversary Collection with the last listed being the one I got for free. Within an hour of arriving home, the UPS man made a delivery, bringing me the Nintendo DS game Konami Clalssics: Arcade Hits.

As with my first review, this is a collection of arcade games. Midway gave us 3 volumes of this series...Volume 2 had 21 games, I think, and they got theme-oriented with the third series which was all racing games. This series contains adaptations of no less than 24 games that were originally games for video arcades. They include:

Spy Hunter, Defender, Defender II, Gauntlet, Joust, Joust II, Paperboy, Rampart, Robotron 2084, Smash TV, Bubbles, Roadblasters, Blaster, Rampage, Sinistar, Super Sprint, Marble Madness, 720, Toobin', KLAX, SPLAT!, Satan's Hollow, Vindicator and Root Beer Tapper. I think that Root Beer Tapper may have originally been called simply Tapper and was renamed to keep kids from wanting to haunt real bars. And Defender II was originally called Stargate...possibly they had to change that because of the TV show Stargate? Perhaps copyright issues were at stake here?

I played many of the games on this disc several times but some I only tried a few times because I either was never a fan of the original arcade game, was not very familiar with a few (some I had never played at all) and just never cared for some. I couldn't figure out quite what to do in Toobin', for instance, and couldn't get the moves right for 720 (720 degrees but I can't get that raised o up there).

Of the games I was familiar with, I generally liked them a lot. I don't know if I'd ever played Joust II but I seem to prefer the first Joust game. The second offers a few twists including changing play fields. Defender was always a favorite but the controls are a bit hard to adjust to here...in the original arcade machine you had a joystick and about 7 buttons to use. My main problem is my ship kept switching direction when I didn't want it to. The controls for Paperboy and one or two others took a bit of getting used to, also. I'm sure I'll get used to them sooner or later. Robotron 2084 has one button firing to the right, one button firing up, etc. but it's easier to just use the little yellow "C" stick on the right which lets you fire at whichever direction you point it towards. And Marble Madness was originally played using a trakball...a regular GameCube controller just isn't the same.

Smash TV is fun...I never played the arcade version but have played the SNES version Super Smash TV. But one of my favorites here is a game I never played in an arcade but which I played for the first time on Atari's portable Lynx system. That game is the puzzle game KLAX. It's a match the brick kind of game...they come rolling down at you in 5 columns...you make them disappear by matching 3 in a row of the same colors. There are goal-specific rounds. One round you may have to just make a certain number of "Klax's"...others you may have to do diagonal ones, another round you may have to reach a certain number of points or survive capturing a certain number of bricks. You play by "catching" each in your holder (it can hold up to 5 at a time) and depositing in any of 5 rows that you wish. It's what they always say about puzzle games...easy to learn, difficult to master.

Overall, I had a lot of fun with this and will probably get the 2nd volume soon. I'm not so sure about the 3rd volume. I don't know if a collection of nothing but racing games would appeal to me.

I'm starting a little project in which I'm going to play each of my GameCube games one by one and do a review of each. I'm no professional reviewer, of course, so this is just for fun. I may go through long stretches where I do a review every day...then I may slow down from time to time. Some games I've played a lot, some not so much...or not at all. I have been buying a lot of games lately so many will indeed be completely new to me. At first I was going to do it strictly alphabetically but I've now decided to just review whatever I feel like. So today I decided to start with an arcade compilation...

    1. Namco Museum: 50th Anniversary (Yes, I'm going to number these reviews so we see how far I am into my collection as we go along.)

    Publisher: Namco
Rating: E10+ (Suitable for anyone 10 years old and up)
    Memory Requirement: 4 blocks

First of all, Namco has not been making video games for 50 years...that industry started in the 1970's. Namco started back in 1955 and their first product were children's rocking horses. They eventually got into other products...eventually including video games.

This game is actually comprised of over a dozen different games, a compilation of old games that appeared in game arcades in the 70s and 80s. The ones I've played so far...

Pac-Man--I like this game though a GameCube controller isn't the best for this game. I'm sure most of you know how to play this...eat the dates and avoid the ghosts until you can eat the power pills that make them vulnerable.

Pacmania--A 3D version of Pac-Man, this has to be unlocked by reaching certain scores in Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man. In this one, Pac-Man can actually jump which helps him out...he can often jump right over a ghost about to get him.

Ms. Pac-Man--Many like this even better than the original Pac-Man. One reason is it has 4 different mazes whereas Pac-Man has just one. I never liked the 2nd maze...it's just too hard.

Galaga--A space shooter that was a sequel to Galaxian (also in this game) where you're fighting enemies that look like multi-colored insects. This is one of the few games I scored over 100,000 points in the arcade. At one point you can link two ships together for double the firepower. This disc also includes a sequel which, like Pacmania, has to be unlocked.

Dig Dug--In this, you create your own maze, digging underground while dealing with dragons and other enemies. I once scored 490,000 points on the arcade version, the most I ever scored on an arcade machine.

Rally-X--This is a racing game where you have to drive around and collect flags while avoiding a handful of other cars that try to smash into you. It's simple but challenging and fun.

Sky Kid--This is a game I don't remember ever playing until now...you are flying a plane who has to shoot down other planes and pick up a bomb and drop it onto an enemy ship out over the ocean.

Mappy--This is one of my all-time favorites. You control Mappy, a police mouse, who is in a department store where various cats are out to get you. To clear a stage, you have to capture the gifts in the store before the cats can get you.

Other games on the disc, which I haven't got to yet, include Galaxian, Pole Position and Pole Position II (a racing game and its sequel), Xevious (an overhead shooter), Bosconian (space shooter), Dragon Spirit and Rolling Thunder (an action spy game). The rules on all of these games are pretty simple and most are fun though there's a few I'm not crazy about but others may like. Most only require the use of the joystick (thumbstick on a GameCube controller) and one, sometimes two, buttons. This game is also available for the Xbox and PS2...and the PC...and the Game Boy Advance...and...

Special Note: For the time being, this blog will be primarily involved with my GameCube reviews, so I've changed the title of my blog here to reflect this.

The four games I have on the way are Battalion Wars, Peter Jackson's King Kong, The Sims 2: Pets and SSX 3. These are all for the GameCube. I think I'm going to scale back on my game buying now...I will allow myself to buy one game every time my Pittsburgh Pirates win 10 games...knowing my team, that will be about once a month...

Yesterday I received my 10th game for my Nintendo DS. Considering I bought my unit back in 2005, I haven't exactly been splurging on the system but I've been buying more in the last half-year or so and will probably continue to purchase games off and on (I do have one more on order right now). Here's what I have so far in alphabetical order...

    1. Animal Crossing: Wild World is the sequal to the GameCube hit. I don't love it as much as I did the original. Maybe I'm just tired of the whole thing.
    2. Metroid Prime Hunters is one of my more recent purchases and I haven't really started playing it yet.
    3. Metroid Prime Pinball was one of my first 5 games on the other hand and one I enjoy. I would like to see some more traditional pinball games come to the DS, however.
    4. New Super Mario Bros. is terrific and one I played pretty much non-stop for a couple of weeks.
    5. Nintendogs: Dachshund & Friends is one I like a lot but haven't played in awhile. I should get back to it soon. There's a cat version coming out (but not made by Nintendo as I recall) called Purr Pals. I'll pick that up, too, if it gets good reviews.
    6. Puyo Pop Fever is the game I got yesterday. I got the GameCube version recently and enjoyed it so much that I decided to pick up this portable version of it.
    7. Super Mario 64 DS is another game I need to get back to and play. I really like the Mario games, evidenced by how many I have, both on this and other systems.
    8. Super Princess Peach is another game that takes place in the Mario universe.
    9. Yoshi's Island DS is yet another. I haven't really played this yet...I hope Baby Mario doesn't bawl like he did in the SNES version...that was so annoying
    10. Zoo Keeper was my first puzzle game on the system...I find it interesting that the two puzzle games I have for the DS are so far the only DS games I have made by a company other than Nintendo. I do need to get at least one more puzzle game. I think it's a law that every gamer has to have Tetris....

I've been saying (here and elsewhere) that I was going to stop buying games for my GameCube library once I'd reached an even 100 games which seemed like a nice round number. Well, I've decided to change my mind about that...there are just too many games I'm interested in that I'd still like to have. So, as l ong as I can find games that still interest me, I'll keep buying them. Interestingly, I've not bought much in the way of Xbox games lately and that's what I mostly was buying last year. I may get Superman Returns soon, though, since I see that's now down to $20 at my local Wal-Mart. I don't know what it is about the GameCube...maybe it's those cute little discs...but I really dig playing it. I now have 5 games on order for it...Tomb Raider: Legend, Pac-Man World 3, Pitfall: The Lost Expedition, Star Wars--Jedi Knights II: Jedi Outcast and Roadkill. I did decide to cancel my pre-order of Radio Allergy. I just don't think it's a game I would really enjoy.

I also finally ordered a couple more games for my Nintendo DS. I only have 8 games for it so I'll soon be bumping that collection up to 10 titles (plus the 3 GBA games I have that I can play on it). The two I have coming are Puyo Pop Fever and Metroid Prime Hunters. I understand that's a rare FPS game for the DS. I wonder how many others there are? I know there's a James Bond game for it though I've heard some don't like it so I'll probably pass on it. I know the PSP (which I don't have) got a Medal of Honor game recently. I wonder if there's any chance the DS will get a World War 2 first-person shooter?

The website IGN.com has picked the 25 best games ever this week for the GameCube, PS2 and Xbox as well as the GBA. They figure that they've all been supplanted by new hardware and this is the year they'll gasp their last for the most part so they may as well celebrate them by picking (in their opinion) what are the best games for each system.

GameCube--I was surprised to see that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess wasn't even considered since they consider it to be primarily a Wiii title. Still, it was made for the GameCube so I didn't think that was a correct decision. Of the games that were allowed, Metroid Prime came in at #1. Since I have more GameCube games than XBox or PS2 games, it's no surprise I have more of their GameCube titles than those of the other systems. In fact, there are only 4 GC titles listed I don't have in my collection: Baten Kaitos, Battalion Wars, Killer 7 and Pikmin 2.

XBox--No big surprise here as Halo came in at #1 and Halo 2 came in at #2. I have both of those as well as another of the XBox top 5 in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Unlike the GC, there were some traditional sports titles in this console's top games including my favorite baseball title, MVP Baseball 2005.

PS2--God of War came in at #1 and I do have that but, just as my library for this is 3rd among the big 3, so is the number of games I have that made the top 25. The only other game that made the PS2 Top 5 that I have is the #2 title, Grand Theft Auto III. I'm kind of surprised that that was the top-listed of the GTA games.

GBA--I never had a GBA unit so it's no surprised I have none of the top 5 here. I do have 3 GBA titles and I think the two Mario games I have made the list. Their pick for #1? Wario Ware Twisted.

Overall, an interesting list and you may want to go over there to read their actual thoughts on each of the games. I jot down the entire lists in a notebook...they may be good suggestions for future game purchases.

Earlier this week, I received the following 3 games for my Nintendo GameCube...

    All-Star Baseball 2003
    MLB SlugFest 20-04
    True Crime: New York City

After getting these, I checked a website where I've been keeping a list of my GC games...and I was surprised. I was pretty sure that, including these and one other game I still have on order, that my list of games would be at 101. Instead, it was at 99. I've been planning on stopping my GameCube purchases once I reached 100 games. I thought the True Crime game (the last one I ordered) would push me over my goal by 1 and I would then have fun playing each game 1 by 1 and doing my own little review series...and whichever one game I found the least interesting would be voted off my Survivor video game island.

After going through my collection some, I did find that somehow I had left the first Call of Duty game off the list. Assuming the list is now accurate (I plan to go over my entire library again to make sure), the one game I still have on order will become my 100th game. That game is Radio Allergy and is supposed to come out next week. It's been delayed once so we'll see if it does make it out this time. I'll probably still do my little reviews of each game. I'm not a professional reviewer, of course, but it should be fun.
