If speed is the issue then what do you need a blitter for? Just install nvdi and you won't even remember you have a blitter? They are a form of artistic expression and that's their use. It may be art that you don't like and then it has no use. And by the way, if you found a game that wasn't patched to run on an STE then it was probably not worth the trouble.

Not even enough to execute the binary I think. You could take a look at highwire. If you turn off images it would run.

http://nic-nac-proje...ari/netsurf.php It needs mint and rpm and ext2 partitions to work. An easymint setup should be ok. I think it needs lots of RAM too.

I guess you left the amiga early. By 1990 ST users would complain (and with good cause) about badly written Amiga ports. Games that could have been programmed much better yet they were rushed ports. I think you are exaggerating the amiga capabilities while belittling the ST ones.

So, pal games can now be played on ntsc machines (and tv's) ?

You don't really have to use all the backgrounds, 1 or 2 could be enough. Also the 4mb version is significantly smaller. Still a larger hd does make sense! P.S. avoid sd cards and adapters..

Some time ago I wrote about Downfall for the atari jaguar and how much fun we had while developing it. For this falcon port little has changed in that respect. GGN tried to add to the game and with the graphics by Templeton and Sh3 the falcon gained a lot of interesting backgrounds. 505 signs the music in this one and the samples from the jaguar version were kept. Some don't fit really well with the falcon, since it's only 32-bit but they are funny to listen to nevertheless . But as someone who had a playtesting role in both of these efforts I can tell you my observations. First of all, I was much more involved in playtesting this and my falcon logged many more hours than the jaguar emulator did. The second is how much difference the extra storage and ram make. We thought it would be better if we had more frames in the background so Ggn went on and made them 9MB's each. 200 or so MB's for the 14MB RAM version of Downfall. And that is not a problem, I have a 4GB sd card on the falcon with 3.2 GB's free, others would have similar setups. Lastly, adding the music was a piece of cake. The falcon has a very nice dsp with it's own 96K RAM that can replay mods without breaking a sweat. But what this really made me do, was to rediscover falcon gaming. During this time, I played games that I never had before and revisited others I had passed quickly. So at the moment I have three falcon game addictions. Conquest of Elysium 2, a fantasy turn based strategy game, Teknoball, an arkanoid clone and of course Downfall! Enjoy Downfall, both in falcon and the jaguar. P.S. With Impulse X being essentially a falcon to jaguar port and Downfall following the reverse course, maybe more games will follow this path?

I think stfm's are easily upgradeable to 1mb. 2.5 with a daughterboard is also easy, solderless i mean, but who can find it?

There aren't many E games but those that are, are really worth the trouble. Also the STE demoscene is very impressive for anyone who might be interested in that and finally, if you plan to get a hard disk then the 4mb's of RAM are really important. That's why we like to suggest the STE.

What is your opinion of Jack Tramiel?
Christos replied to Master Phruby's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
It somewhat did there too with the hi colour mode. 65536 colours in a chunky display, which is something the amiga didn't have and I believe the amiga could only handle 16.7M colours in static screens. -
Netsurf should be able to view most of the websites.

I think the source is available though, for anyone interested in giving it a go.

Not a bad game, a bit (a lot) on the hard side and apart from the digi sound it could have easily been an ST game (it seems to use the hw scrolling and the blitter for the sprites but not very effectively). Didn't like the graphics much though, a bit confusing. Still, a very early title, so a very good effort.

Have you heard my voice? I guess not, so here is your chance . I tried to make a new video today, of me presenting my atari falcon 060, what sort of hardware I have, how it all looks like etc. I did it in english for the international crowd and I am not sure how it would appeal to people. So express your views, even if they are on the harsh side (I was never a fan of "nothing positive to say..."), So enjoy the vid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQHWkzJSOgk

Thanks for the information. I don't believe I ever heard of Whitewater Madness and can't find. What did you think of the STE by the way?

Action adventure indeed. Amazing game starring a physicist.

Argument still stands!

Aren't those basically our age group now? Is that even retro?

Looks like some cable was cut somewhere or that the switch broke. With alt+arrow keys you can move the cursor and alt+insert is left click, alt+clr is the right. That should be enough if you just want to load the odd game. If you want to run some stuff in gem and you can get your hands on a pc serial mouse there is a driver for that. You connect it to one of the serial ports and you are good to go. Lastly you can get or make a ps2 to atari adapter like the pest or similar. I think the amiga people have one that can be used on an atari st as well.

How to use Atari SLM605 Laser Printer
Christos replied to AtariSociety's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
NVDI should have the drivers. If I am not mistaken those printers go to the ACSI port and should be very fast. -
I think I confused it with medusa..

040 cpu (64MHz but don't quote me on that), pci graphics and audio card, high resolutions, lots of RAM and an all around pretty good machine. TT clone would be more accurate though. It runs TOS 5 which is TOS 4 with some improvements and of course as all ataris and clones freemint (which is being actively developed btw). As for what you can expect to pay for one, assuming you can get someone to part with one, I don't know. Never seen one for sale so anything from 500 to 1000 euros would be a fair assesment. For that kind of money though, I'd be looking at a firebee. Why would you need a milan for?

I think I know why so few Atarians like the A8 AND ST equally.
Christos replied to oky2000's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Pretty interesting thread. My affection is towards the ST (or more precisely falcon) although i started from the a8 as well. I would say that the 130xe that was my first computer was used a lot more as a games machine than anything else. I was too young when I got it and though i did tinker a lot with type ins (and even made some programs of my own design) it was used more as a games console than a computer. Add to that the fact that the educational system here didn't promote using of computers and the xe is now very fond memories and I don't feel like doing anything productive on it. The falcon was the first computer I got that gave me power. From playing games, to using it to write stuff for the university, to learn how to program a bit and even run some simulations for my master's thesis. I only got a pc around 2000-2001 and that was because I needed to write my graduate thesis in a Microsoft compatible format. And the falcon is an ST. For me, after getting to use an ST it felt exactly the same. Having said that, I'd really like some space to setup the 130xe as well -
It should have come on a floppy. Otherwise it was only in your HD. Also, if you downloaded 8.4 it would have been a demo version so you couldn't do anything with it. HDDriver is commercial.

Let's not get into a discussion why adventure games rule so much over rpg's. Anyway, I've also heard good words about Legend of Valour and of course I did play Ishar 2 a lot. There are some pretty good indie rpg's for the ST as well but since I am not a fan, I wouldn't know . Let's leave sh3 to return to Elder scrolls
